The restaurant and hotel were only open for weekends when we were in the area (September) so we planned a walk around having drink or lunch there.
Many places we came across in the Aosta Valley only serve lunch until 2pm but we arrived at 2.30pm expecting we would only be able to have a drink but they were happy to serve us. We both had spinach tagliatelle with wild boar sauce followed by chestnuts with cream and chocolate sauce. It was still warm so we sat on the terrace enjoying the views of the surrounding mountains.
The waiter told us about snow shoe walking from the hotel in the winter which sounds very tempting.
The hotel and restaurant has the Saveurs de val d'Aosta accreditation which means it provides typical local cuisine to a particular standard.

This hotel and restaurant is at the top of a winding mountain road; after this there are only walks amongst the mountains.
We stopped for lunch after a 3 hour mountain walk and we opted to eat outside, on a terrace overlooking part of the Mont Blanc range, so the view is majestic.
If you opt to eat indoors, you will be nestled in typical, cosy alpine surroundings - lots of carved wood; stuffed animals, etc.
The food was lovely. Our lunch was one of the best from the entire vacation. We had wild boar tagliatelle, followed by roasted chestnuts with whipped cream in a hot chocolate sauce.
The service was friendly and professional.
NB neither hotel (7 rooms) nor restaurant is open full time - it’s seasonal, so in September it’s only open Friday to Sunday, so check before you go, as its a long drive.
It’s top of our list of places to visit when we come back next year.

Enjoyed a tailored menu with 5 starters, 2 primi and 1 main plus desert. Absolutely delicious all of it plus superb local wines. Incredible to find such a culinary gem in the middle of the mountains. I will return for sure :-)

Getting up the mountain to La JB was far from straightforward in heavy snow and icy conditions. But it was worth it!! Its tasteful alpine interior is cosy and welcoming. The menu offered locally inspired dishes that were absolutely delicious. And the service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

I was at this restaurant many times before but I did not have the occasion to go in the last two years. We finally found time to pay a visit last Saturday evening and it was, as usual, fantastic. Not only the food is delicious but the atmosphere is super cosy and relaxed. It is really worth driving to Planaval. I definitivamente recommend it. Les Jolie Bergere is also an Hotel.
