“Disappointing food, value and service”
Reviewed 7 June 2014 via mobile

We are two couples who each year go to high-rated restaurants and have done for 10 years. Last night we went to Cutler & Co. What a disappointment. The greeting was excellent and friendly, but that's when the service started and ended. We found both our waiter and the sommelier aloof and rather full of themselves.

We choose the menu selection/degustation as we do whenever we go to these top rated restaurants. Cutler & Co's degustation was extremely disappointing and very poor value at $130 per head. Generally bland flavours and not at all suited to a winter's evening. It was not a patch on the degustation meals we have had at other Melbourne restaurants, including Maha and, on the Mornington Peninsula, Ten Minutes x Tractor.

We also chose the matching wines (the classic collection) - 6 glasses of wine at $90 a head - and were very disappointed. The wine were mostly mundane, often with a lack of finish on the palate, particularly the Cabernet Franc. For each wine, the sommelier parroted off the wine's features, but it seemed to us that he had no personal connection or opinion of the wine - he may as well have been reading the winemakers own notes. The service was generally disinterested and remote - no personality or connection with us as diners.

To top it off, after having spent close to $1000 on dinner, there was nobody to give us our coats we had left with them - we had to rummaged around the reception desk to find out coats.

We will not be going back to Cutler & Co, nor will we recommend it. We will also think carefully before we try any other Andrew McConnell restaurant.

“Impecable service”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

I was a bit surprised on arrival at the casual nature of the dining room, but the service which followed was perfect - professional, friendly, and efficient. The degustation was amongst the best meals I've ever had. Highly recommend to gourmands.

“Amazing experience!”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

We booked a table for the early sitting on a Friday night. The restaurant wasn't very crowded to begin with but did fill fast from 8pm onwards. The noise level when full was a little loud but not bad enough to cause a problem talking across the table. We were a party of 3 adults and found the staff extremely friendly, witty and knowledgable of the food and wines. We decided to share the suckling pig and had a few appetisers also. The food was delicious and faultless. The wine list is extensive and there were prices to suit everyone. The lighting was subtle but not too dark to read the menu. Whilst this might not be an affordable restaurant for everyday dining for many, it certainly was fantastic for a special occasion.

“A Memorable Afternoon”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

The occasion was my 70th birthday and the Cutler & Co was chosen by my wife as part of a surprise birthday lunch with a dozen of our old friends. It was a degustation structured around my wife's choice of main and accompanied with some excellent matching wines. The presentation and service was impeccable and extremely attentive (eg water glasses never allowed to empty) - it was a thoroughly memorable occasion satisfying some hardened bon viveurs.
Incidentally, I have attended here on previous occasions prior to this and have had a similar experience.

“Once was too many”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Mid-week dinner for three. No expectations but what a disappointment. Lights were too dim to read the menu (waiter suggested we use the lights from our iphones - or he had a torch that he gives to diners if we wanted it! - so aware of the problem but not fixing it). Entres all roughly the same, small selection of similar food - veal had a chemical taste to it, couldn't be eaten. Choice of only four mains, again nothing inspiring and everything with far too many flavours. Fish was the safest choice and probably the best on our table with a score of 6/10 - nothing else got more than a 5 (we have a thing of scoring restaurants as we eat out a lot). Needless to say we didn't stay for dessert. Wine very over priced although a reasonable selection. Staff overly friendly, every single person said hello and welcome (once or twice is enough but not everyone, it was almost a joke) our particular waiter was fantastic and not intrusive but kept up with our needs really well.
