We are two couples who each year go to high-rated restaurants and have done for 10 years. Last night we went to Cutler & Co. What a disappointment. The greeting was excellent and friendly, but that's when the service started and ended. We found both our waiter and the sommelier aloof and rather full of themselves.
We choose the menu selection/degustation as we do whenever we go to these top rated restaurants. Cutler & Co's degustation was extremely disappointing and very poor value at $130 per head. Generally bland flavours and not at all suited to a winter's evening. It was not a patch on the degustation meals we have had at other Melbourne restaurants, including Maha and, on the Mornington Peninsula, Ten Minutes x Tractor.
We also chose the matching wines (the classic collection) - 6 glasses of wine at $90 a head - and were very disappointed. The wine were mostly mundane, often with a lack of finish on the palate, particularly the Cabernet Franc. For each wine, the sommelier parroted off the wine's features, but it seemed to us that he had no personal connection or opinion of the wine - he may as well have been reading the winemakers own notes. The service was generally disinterested and remote - no personality or connection with us as diners.
To top it off, after having spent close to $1000 on dinner, there was nobody to give us our coats we had left with them - we had to rummaged around the reception desk to find out coats.
We will not be going back to Cutler & Co, nor will we recommend it. We will also think carefully before we try any other Andrew McConnell restaurant.
