“Can't wait to go back!”
Reviewed 9 May 2013

We had a lovely time at La Ducrie. Joe & Vivian welcomed us like family and we could not have felt more at home. Joe's Normandy Tour was truly special - don't miss that opportunity! After a long day of touring the Normandy area, it was wonderful to get back to the fabulous meal that Vivian had prepared. Their sweet dogs, Duke and Ghost, helped us get our "dog fix" as we were missing our dog at home. "The Girls" will be returning in June and I can't wait!

If you want a truly unique and memorable experience of your time in Normandy, stay a couple of nights with Viv and Joe at La Ducrie, take Joe's D-Day tour and have dinner with them in their amazing home.
Even though it was our first visit, from the moment we arrived and were welcomed with tea and cake and a seat in front of the log fire, with the dogs settled around our feet, it felt as if we were back catching up with old friends.
Viv and Joe's generous and genuine hospitality and the accommodation itself is a refreshing change from the standard hotel experience. Treat yourselves to something special and stay here!

La Ducrie really looks like the pictures. When we drove up we recognized it right away. A charming Norman castle with a moat in the French countryside. Staying here was a highlight of our trip. Joe and Vivian are kind and welcoming. The dogs made us miss our own dog at home. The tour of the castle is quite interesting with lots of fun tidbits from Joe and Vivian. Their home is also full of interesting objects which add to the charm of the castle. A very unique B&B experience. La Ducrie is very close to the D-Day beaches, Bayeux and Mont St. Michel so a great stopping place.

How can one describe a B&B where you arrive as a guest and depart as a best friend. Joe and Vivian welcomed us as if we were old friends they had not seen for years. We arrived in distress after our rental car reservation agent failed to show in Caen. Joe picked us up at the train station in Lison, poured us a drink upon arrival at the magnificant La Ducrie and then whipped up a quick dinner. Vivian complimented the meal with a wonderful desert. All well and above the call of duty!! The room was wonderful ( remember to duck your head at the doorways if you're taller than 5 feet !!). The remaining days were filled with a wonderful acomodation to all our needs
We did hire Joe as our tour director and guide and the service was impecable. If you are looking for the ultimate Normandy experience.... look no further the La Ducrie !!
I'll be back

Room Tip: We had two rooms, one for my wife and I and one for our adult son. Both were large, comfortable and...

We stayed 2 nights at La Ducrie and loved every minute. Joe and Vivian are gracious and helpful. Joe gave us many tips for touring the area. I wish we had hired him for a tour of the beaches. Our room was charming and breakfast was lovely. The castles is true to a 600 year-old gem. We loved the quiet setting with swans, ducks and gentle dogs. We hope to return and will recommend La Ducrie to our friends and family.

La Ducrie is a 600 year old castle which has been re-fitted with modern conveniences while preserving many original and interesting features. During our four night stay, Joe and Vivienne made us feel very welcome and comfortable in their home. Our room had its own ensuite and was very spacious and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed hearing about the history of the castle and being shown some of the original features of the property. The location was a great base for exploring the region and we loved driving through the countryside to visit Bayeux and Mont St Michel.

Breakfast consisted of cheeses, hams, breads and delicious fresh croissants that Joe picked up from a local bakery each morning. The breakfast room overlooked the pond which is connected to the moat and has a menagerie of animals.

Joe offers a whole day D-Day tour. The price of the tour included travel, entry to various attractions, lunch and morning/afternoon tea. We covered a lot of ground (including Sainte Mere Eglise, Utah and Omaha beaches, Pointe du Hoc and the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial) over about 8 hours. Joe is very knowledgeable on the history of the region and we enjoyed his commentary and insights.

It was a unique experience to stay in a 600 year old castle and a pleasure meeting the friendly owners who made us feel at home. They also have some well-behaved dogs and cats. We would love to visit again and highly recommend it for the hospitality and as a base for exploring Normandy.

Room Tip: All rooms have their own private bathroom but not all are ensuite. Check upon booking if you have a...
