Le Relais De La Foret
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Benon
Reviewed 7 July 2009

Coventiently situated on the main road away from the coast, the Relais is an interesting mix of a fairly utilitarian hotel with an outstanding restaurant. It's pretty isolated, but has plenty of room around it to relax after a long jorney. The rooms are a reasonable size, but fairly dull. However, ours had a balcony overlooking the forest which made up for it. We had the (smallish) swimming pool to ourselves and all the sunloungers had clean cushions, and obvously had been well maintained.

The food in the restaurant was excellent, and worthy of a visit on its own merit. Each course was well prepared and presented, and the flavours excellent. The accompanying wine was also very good. Breakfast was OK, but nothing special.

La Rochelle is a big draw for the tourist, on the other hand its not easy to get a room in the Summer its not always easy to get a hotel there. On the other hand, if you have a hire car and don't mind driving for 20 minutes or so, on the main road to Niort (fast road, never too busy) you take the Benon exit and arrive directly at the Le Relais. It’s rural, nothing else here but the hotel and tranquillity. Nice little pool, tennis court, woodland and the hotel itself. Very pleasant and spacious relaxing area inside adjacent to the restaurant and time to contemplate the polystyrene stuffed animals mounted on the walls (seriously) from the comfort of the relaxing chairs. In the Winter the lounge has a roaring fire, its very cosy. Checking in, the bedroom is a bit depressing – it’s a dark dirty yellow colour painted breezeblock, no aircon (and in July, it can be uncomfortably warm – especially with the plastic lined bed-sheet). Fortunately there is a private balcony so you can have some air and look out to the woods. The room is nothing special make no mistake, a miserable small portable TV just French channels. The shower very basic, you have to hold the shower head (it’s not mounted from the wall). The loo is in a very narrow room. OK, treat the room as something to sleep in … get to the bar or restaurant. For 70 EURO you are having a room AND included is a 3 course meal + breakfast, now that’s a great deal. AND the meal is sublime. Superb service, a set meal of top quality, chef prepared and immaculate. Breakfast is very fresh, and perfectly adequate.
For business people, no WIFI is currently available I think a real pity but sometimes maybe its nice have no connectivity for a change, relax and unwind – for that, and top quality food, this place is unbeatable.

A pleasant hotel with good facilities. Good sized rooms with balconies. Bathrooms getting a bit tired, and could do with a refurb. Has a good sized indoor/outdoor heated pool. The restaurant has an interesting menu, with well cooked food, but a little pricey, and may not be to everyone's taste. The breakfast is poor value for money. Pleasant staff, pleasant surroundings.
Please note that this hotel is some way out of the village, and you must make sure you know its location accurately. It is NOT in the village of Benon.

A two day stay in September made memorable by the superb food served up at dinner. Ate in the hotel restaurant both nights and the quality was just exceptional. A very high standard of cuisine with imaginative menus brilliantly cooked and attractively served. If you are struggling to cope with the French descrptions on the menu, Madame will be on hand to help.
The rooms are a bit basic and I think could be a bit claustrophobic in the extreme heat of mid-summer. Nevertheless, as rooms go, it did the job. The setting is good but you can hear some noise from an RN road close by.
