“peaceful rural retreat in the Sierra Nevadas”
Reviewed 7 March 2011

We stayed in the quiet season and, although there were a few other cottages booked, we were the only people in the bar and restaurant for dinner - we had a lovely dinner sitting in front of the wood fire in the bar. It was very relaxing and quiet, with amazing views across the mountains and white villages. Most accommodation is in small self-contained cottages - ours had a basic but adequate kitchen and a private courtyard with table that would be fantastic for summer bbqs and eating outdoors. There are lots of lovely spots to sit outside and absorb the silence and the view - I'm sure it gets busier and noisier in summer as it would be popular with families but we had an extremely relaxing stay. Get a map or directions before you travel- it is located on the main road a few kilometers outside Cadiar.

Amazing food, amazing wine, stunning views, great rooms, nice pool. The only down side was the heat at night (in July), we had no fan in the room, so the heat was uncomfortable. But even saying this, I was very very happy to have stayed here.

We knew the Alpujarras from previous trips but had never stayed here. Now we will probably not stay anywhere else.

The Alqueria is an old traditional village, abandoned and then transformed by an entrepreneur from the nearby Cadiar. The houses have been very well refurbished with excellent touches such as underfloor heating everywhere (please check if this applies to all units, we stayed in #16).

The lifestyle is typically slow and Alpujarran - meals using delicious home-grown and organic produce out on the patio with the incredible view of the Sierra Nevada, then walks, bike rides or horse treks along marked trails or a drive over the Sierra de la Contraviesa to the coast, only half an hour away.

The service is simple, honest, modest and wonderful. We loved it.

We went here for our honeymoon, choosing it because it looked tucked away and peaceful. It was exactly that. And very very beautiful.

We had a bit of a nightmare finding the place as we didn't have a map and were driving from Malaga, but got there in the end. It should have taken about 2.5 hours. When we arrived it was a bit confusing about how to check in - you go to the bar not the reception area - and staff didn't seem that friendly at first. We realised through our stay of 5 days that this was just because they were very busy and that actually everyone we met was really lovely. We did need to polish up our basic Spanish a bit!

The location is as stunning as it looks on the website, and we enjoyed eating almonds and figs we picked from the trees around and about. The room was quite large - more of a mini-house, with a shower, patio and TV with spanish channels. The food was delicious and seemed good value, and the wine and sherry was great too.

The pool was deserted so we enjoyed having that to ourselves. Again, beautiful surroundings. Fantastic sunsets over the hills.

We had a great day trip to Granada which was about an hour and a half away.

I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Alqueria de Morayma, especially if you just want somewhere to retreat and relax. I think it is also a good spot for walkers, although we didn't do any of that.

Alqueria de Morayma is a complete gem. Its location is stunning - we had dinner overlooking the incredible mountains and villages of the Sierra Nevada. Our apartment was cosy and traditionally furnished with al the amenities you need. The linen was changed every day and everything was very clean. The food was typically Andalucian and delicious. It was also exceptionally good value. The staff were extremely helpful and obliging. There is a beautiful pool and a bodega on site. Our expectations were exceeded - we loved it!

Disappointed that the gorgeous setting and comfortable rooms were let down by the unfriendly and un-welcoming attitude of some of the key staff.

Right from arrival, through our first (and last) meal in the restaurant we felt as though the staff were doing us some great favour. I speak a little Spanish, and had had no problems making myself understood in other parts of Andalusia, yet somehow here I was unintelligible and snapped back at in terse English

We were there for 4 nights, and after the first kept a low profile, eating out or cooking for ourselves. If I'd not booked and paid ahead through an agency, we would have left after the one night and moved on.

I don't expect the red carpet, or for people to fall over themselves when I show up, but I do hope for a smile and a 'hola'.

This place is gorgeous.

Its a converted farmhouse in the middle of nowhere - although this part of Andalusia has I think become fairly saturated with Brits who read that Driving over lemons book - with lovely rooms built into the old wooden framed buildings.

The scenery opens before you, rolling limestone, the red wine tastes like ribena (and that's a compliment), the pace of life is slower than John Prescott's cerebral cortex, the beds are comfy.

If you're in the area, please try and fit this place in.
