I went here because I wanted to see for myself the place where Spanish (and Basque) had first been written down. There is a real history to this place. You can sense it. This takes you right back to the 5th century. The founder is San Millan who was driven by God's chosen path for him. The first Spanish words were penned here by an unknown monk probably in the 11th century. Not in the Yuso monastery. You need to book in advance (there is a bus that goes up there - 2 km). You can do this at the Yuso monastery. Note that they do not do any tours over lunch.
