Just returned from a five-night break, courtesy of Secret Escapes, at this excellent hotel, situated in a "golf resort" (the course actually winds around the hotel and nearby villas and apartments), some 30 minutes drive from Alicante airport. Although neither my wife nor I are golfers, we did not feel in any way that we were in the "wrong place".

The hotel is classed, officially, as four-star but we had no complaints at all about its service, facilities or staff. Although our room was the hotel's "cheapest" type, known as a "Deluxe Double", it was spacious with a large king-size double bed, large en-suite (including two wash basins), safe (free), minibar and kettle. I had requested, by email, a room on a "high floor with a pool view", both of which were granted. We were in room 444. (The pool is at the rear of the hotel, rooms at the front have a rather less "interesting" view.)

The pool itself is of a very generous size and, perhaps because there were not many guests in the hotel whilst we were there, obtaining a sun-bed (complete with foam mattress) and plenty of space to actually "swim", was very easy.

The food was always served buffet-style, with good variety, well-cooked and, generally, hot, though some items could be a little cooler than "English" guests might have wished.

Staff on reception were always helpful, especially Sara, (who was, apparently, actually born in London) but whose knowledge of the area enabled us to take a trip inland (we had hired a car from the airport for the duration of our stay) visiting Alcoi and Xixona (the latter having a quite unique "Museo del Turron", dedicated to the history of this local delicacy, known to us as "nougat", including tasting opportunities!)

We were impressed by the small part of Alicante we were able to visit, though this was necessarily quite limited by time.

Although, like reviewer "Julie A", our booking was for Bed and Breakfast, we opted to pay at the hotel an additional 21 Euro per person per night to upgrade to Half-Board. We did not regret that decision, since the relative remoteness of the "resort" and the quite limited number of other places to eat nearby could have meant driving some distance each evening for a meal. However, the fact that the serving of dinner did not begin until 20:00 might be a deterrent to some. (But this is a "Spanish" hotel, though with many other nationalities there, which, so far as I can tell, does not feature on any of the major (or minor) Tour Operators lists!)

"Julie A" makes reference to early morning noise; we did not experience this (and the nearby "chemical plantation in nearby pods" is actually a large number of poly-tunnels inside which are grown tomatoes for the canning factory located some distance away, so no noise and no smells.)

All in all, an excellent short break and we shall, almost certainly, return in the near future.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room with a pool view; higher floors give a wide view of the area, from the mountai...

I recently stayed here to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends. The hotel was clean and in a quiet location perfect if you just want to chill. On arrival we were very well looked after at reception by very friendly staff who explained well the all-inclusive package. Our rooms were ready for us which was also an added bonus. The manager introduced himself which I thought was a nice touch.
The rooms are spacious and very clean and although I didn’t have a pool view it really didn’t matter. The bar served most drinks you would want, and although at times the service was slow, mostly the staff were friendly. I did feel at times that the bar especially during busy periods was not sufficiently staffed. One particular staff member could have tried a little harder to smile !!
The pool area was really lovely with plenty of comfortable sun beds, it was especially pretty at night.
The pool area was busier at weekends with local children using the pool. Most of them had no manners what so ever, being rude to my friends. A fellow traveller had to tell them on more than one occasion how to behave.
Our package included all meals served buffet style or snacks from the bar at allotted times during the day. The breakfast was very good with plenty to choose from. It was however not replenished quick enough at busy periods. Lunch again was good with a pretty good selection. By dinner I felt that the food lacked variety and that some of it was not very warm.
The bar snacks lacked choice and we were given wrong orders. The food was often cold and not very well presented. Should I return to the hotel I would probably choose bed and breakfast as there are a couple of places to eat within walking distance.
Overall the hotel was able to offer us a relaxed and chilled environment which was clean and for the most part served acceptable food. The hotel needs to ensure the evening food is just as good as the day with better selections and I would probably return.

Me and my girlfriend recently visited this hotel, we are 28yrs and 25yrs old. The Hotel looks great and didnt take to long to get to via taxi from Alicante airport, between 25-30 minutes. Once there you go up a long driveway into what looks like a small village. The hotel itself was very nice, if not a little quiet. The Room was a nice size and clean and had a nice balcony. The staff were friendly, however one lady did seem to look down her nose at us when we inquired about things. The staff also mixed up one of our reservations, we had booked a trip out and they hadnt written it down, so when we came downstairs to go, we were let down. Thankfully though they offered to take us anyway. It just annoyed us a little that they had forgotten our conversation THE DAY BEFORE!

The pool looked amazing and was very nice. Sometimes they had music on which added to the mood, but sometimes they didnt which made it feel a little quiet. But i respect that some older people didnt want to listen to music. They had an aqua gym for 2 days we were there, in the morning. It was a guy teaching water aerobics and was hilarious! The outside bar was closed but we managed to get beer from inside and bring it out, a small beer €2, large €4.

We had Breakfast included and that was quite nice. However, the woman on the door was a little rude and snappy at times. The breakfast was a buffet and had all sorts of cooked things i.e. a fry up, but also had pastries, fruits and cereals and a coffee machine. The decor in the breakfast area was nice but average.

A small 5 minute walk from the hotel there is a restaurant (which is very nice), a cafe, a small shop (newsagent) another cafe and 2 bars one of which is an English bar and the guy in there was very helpful and gave us the number for an English taxi driver. One of the things that was annoying is that, in Spain they start the taxi meter from wherever they are when they get the call. I know no-one can help this, it just annoyed us once that the meter was on €8.50 before we'd even left the hotel!!

We visited El Campello beach quite a lot which we got to for €10 each way. Its a small 5-10 minute drive and on a hot day was booming, very busy indeed, nice beach good waves and lovely warm sea. We did have to buy an umbrella to shade us, though there were some you could hire. If you visit this hotel I would 100% recommend this beach, its not far and has more shops/tourist shops/bars & restaurants.

We also visited Alicante which cost around €20 each way. Had a really nice time walking around though and doing the touristy thing, visiting the castle and the bull ring etc.

All in all i would say this hotel would be preferred by people 35+. I did have a great time with my girlfriend but it can be quite quiet and you have to create your own adventure. We didnt rent a car so at times felt a little stuck inside. But not enough to ruin anything. Nice little get away but if you want more of a party holiday I would not recommend this hotel. We did go early September so it could have possibly been more livelier in July/August time.

Room Tip: A room with a pool view was quiet and at night very lovely, as apposed to some people who have a vie...

We were looking for a few days of sun and sloth, being two male friends in their 60s, and this hotel was great for that. But it would not suit younger people - not in mid-September anyway

It is very well appointed and furnished, and scupulously clean and modern looking. The staff that we came in contact with were very friendly and helpful, particularly Veronica who was a joy. We were on the "all inclusive" package so can't comment on the food and drink prices but the feeling I got was that it is not cheap - but in a hotel that is easily the four star it claims you would expect this. The buffet food in the main restaurant was fine. It had all the usual qualities that Brits notice in Spain - food warm rather than hot, very fatty bacon with the breakfast, etc - but it was all good quality and there was a very wide choice. You sometimes had to guess what the food was as it wasn't always labelled

The room was of a good size with two comfortable beds, a flat screen TV, a small minibar fridge which we kept our own bottles of water cool in, a kettle (but no tea/coffee was provided), reasonable air conditioning and a bathroom with powerful over-bath shower, bidet, toilet and two separate handbasins. As seems the case everywhere in hotels these days, the fan in the ceiling didn't work though. Towels were changed every day if you left them in the bath. The TV still only has one English channel - I have seen comments in these reviews from the hotel saying this would be fixed. How hard can it be - I am sure some of the high class villas in the street with the huge satellite dishes in their grounds get hundreds of channels, just like I do through cable at home. TV shouldn't really be too important, but when there is no entertainment and you are miles away from anything else to do in the evening .....

We had asked when we booked the hotel for a room facing the pool which disappointingly we didn't get - given that the hotel was far from even half full, this was something we thought more care could have been taken over.

Be aware that the hotel is also called Del Alba on some websites and you may see it referred to as this when looking for directions

The outdoor pool is big and suitable for all ages and abilities having a very shallow walk - in paddling pool depth at one end (and there is a small covered pool next to it but as the weather was so glorious when we were there it wasn't being used much).

As all reviewers have said, the hotel is remote and public transport seems not existent so best to hire a car. Again, as others have said, park easily for free in the quiet street leading to the hotel rather than pay the 9 Euros a night. It is a great shame that the hotel charges for the minibus rides into Alicante and El Campello - the hotel isn't cheap and it feels a bit much to be charged for the shuttle bus to civilisation.

The free Wifi works well in the public areas, albeit quite a slow connection - fast enough to pick up emails and football results but not enough for video streaming. There are a few PCs that can be used for free in the Foyer.

There is an amusing attempt at a British Pub apparently called the "Rose Bud" next to the regular small bar in the area near the pool. It is one small room with dark wood panelling, two TVs usually showing Spanish football - and a small bar serving exactly the same limited range of lager beer drinks as the other bar. There is a pool table which costs 1 Euro per game - beware that it is in an alcove where there is not always quite enough room to use the full sized cue, so play for fun rather than to break records!

Neither bar is big so I would imagine there are long waits in busy times - and they don't have pint glasses

The two main issues we had with the hotel was how quiet it was - we went in mid-September and we are guessing there were less than 100 people staying at what is a large hotel, and the general lack of information. There was no entertainment of any kind either during the day or evening. We appreciate that it is end of season, but NO entertainment! We arrived on Sunday afternoon and left on Thursday morning so maybe there was something at the end of the week, but nothing was advertised. On the information issue, there was no booklet in the room with such things as menus, mealtimes, services available in the hotel and things that they could arrange, how to work the TV and airconditioning, where the gym was, local attractions and amenities, etc etc. Some of this was available elsewhere if you looked around, but not all of it - and the website is similarly disorganised. The hotel could so easily put this right and would probably make more money by making some of its services more accessible. For example, it is right next to a golf course but there is nothing obvious about playing a round, getting lessons etc

If you walk 10 minutes up the hill from the hotel (there is only one way - the hotel is at the end of a cul de sac) there is a small parade of shops/restaurants/bars where Premier League football can be seen if that is what you fancy

Overall - a really lovely hotel for a quiet break, but definitely not for young people and it may struggle with such things as the bar when busy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool when you check in

My friend and I went to Bonalba Hotel for three days and two nights for some R&R (Sept), It was exactely what it said on the tin and a little more, the receptionist very friendly and helpful as were most of the staff at the Hotel. We asked for a room overlooking the pool area (room 138) which also overlooks the golf course and as far as the mountains in the distance. The Pool area is very spacious and clean and there are plently of sun loungers for all. We were on a B&B basis and the breakfast was delicious and there is something for everyone. Although there is not much to do in the evening we would highly recommend the Hotel for a few days rest and relaxation. Well done to the Bonalba Hotel. (btw they do prepare an amazing Mojito).

Booked this hotel for two nights for myself and a friend and we just wanted a short break in the sun. Price was excellent - we paid for bed and breakfast. Hotel really lovely - bit isolated but we guessed that people staying at this hotel were either there for the golf or on business. Our room overlooked the pool and was lovely with a huge bathroom, air con, safe, hairdryer, kettle. Breakfast was buffet style and although a bit mad on the Sunday morning - we think maybe the locals also eat here - the food was fantastic - lots of choice. We did encounter some language problems as my Spanish is very very limited but to be fair all staff did their best to communicate and after all we were in Spain!

Agree with one of the reviews that it would be a good idea to have a small shop selling gifts , essentials etc.

It is a bit of a trek into Alicante town - approx 20 euros each way in a taxi but worth going in as its a lovely city

French restaurant La Perla was lovely but our favourite was the little cafe bar right on the corner of the roundabout - sorry - can't remember the name - but very friendly and very cheap.

Pool bar was closed and we initially thought this was due to the hotel being quiet but have since read other reviews and it looks like it is always closed. We didnt mind going into the bar to get our drinks but did experience a few times that we were ignored while staff served Spanish customers - a bit off putting for us ladies!

Finally a thank you to Alfonso - I emailed him lots of questions before we travelled and he was very efficient with his responses!

Room Tip: Ask for a pool room - we were in room 138
