We've been struggling for some time to find a good reasonably priced hotel in this area of South West Mallorca and this ain't it!
We stayed here before it became part of the H10 group and it has definitely improved, but not enough to warrant a third stay.
The rooms have been improved from the last time we stayed and are reasonable, at least they are of this century! But the television only offered BBC1 - no sky, so that could be improved, also there was no tea making facility in the room, just a small coffee machine with even smaller cups!
The wifi sucks! it was free for the first 2 devices! (Why do hotels limit the wifi like this it makes no sense and then to password protect it with obscure computer generated passwords is just a pain, it should be free and total access!) Anyway it didn't matter because the quality of the connection was really poor. It took ages to download the simplest of information and was so frustrating it may as well have been restricted to the flippin reception desk! But at least the room was clean and the electrics all worked. Although (and I know it's only 4 star) but the bathroom towels were only changed once per day.
Where this hotel really scores is its location, it is only a 5 Euro's taxi to Porta Portals marina and 15 minutes from Palma. But the location just isn't enough to swing it, I doubt we would go back.
The rest of the hotel is quite dated and needs major work, just calling it 'boutique' isn't enough to justify the crappy pool area that has so many large trees you need a sun bed on wheels to try to catch the sun. There must be a preservation order on the trees otherwise it just doesn't make sense to screen the hotel from the sun or the guests from the view. On our last morning there we managed to put 2 sun beds in a gap where the sun actually got though (although if we had stayed we would have had to move to somewhere else as the trees only offered a limited time frame for this spot!) anyway that many pine needles fell onto us from trees above, i could have wove a basket! and we spent the whole time picking bits of tree off us.
This is a smallish hotel spread over quite a wide area, (there are 2 outdoor pools) access to the sun is as bad at both! But if you have a room in the grounds and not part of the main block and it rains you are going to get soaked before you get to reception! Plus points are it has a nice small beach and...I can't think of anything else.
By the way the staff are useless. It's probably not their fault, but they don't seem to have been trained to engage with their guests. You don't get served tea for breakfast, you don't get pool service, it was a nightmare getting them to get a taxi, they never say anything other than hola! on the way in or out. They need some work!
Strangely it's the only hotel I've been to that didn't sell water in plastic bottles for around the pool, I asked and was told they only had nice child friendly glass bottles!
Anyway the baseline is I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
If you just want a base or bed the Marina Portals is cheaper and closer to the port, (although their pool area is overlooked by the crappiest set of apartments you've ever seen,) but at least it's cheap! Or if you want quality there is the Hospice Maricel which is very 5 Star but expensive! (And if you get a room on the other side of the road - which you invariably will, you have to access the pool and reception via an underpass), you get wet getting back to reception in the rain and you can't use the room balconies due to the traffic noise! But it is still a nice hotel - but overpriced. We have even stayed at the Mardaval (which is right next door to the Punta Negra) when it opened which is the absolute best in the area but is a crazy price! it was expensive when we stayed but now it's ridiculous. However, as it is just next door to the Punta Negra, it shows the potential of this hotel, what it needs is major investment, (actually it needs pulling down and just making use of the land and location), the least it needs is a major update of all the public areas, the owners are missing a trick here, they could improve it and charge more to stay, whereas at the moment it is actually overpriced for what they offer. Don't waste your time booking here, there has to be somewhere better for the money... But I'm still looking!
Just as a final note, we hired a car from Gold Star at the airport, don't do it! When we arrived every car hire desk was empty of customers but Gold Star had a massive queue!! We queued an hour to get to the desk, (there was the same situation at their desk when we returned to the airport) so it may be slightly cheaper than the reset but its not worth the hassle, book with one of the others and save yourself a major wait.
