We were on a walking tour of the area and approached the castle from the back road. Unfortunately we only had credit cards and they only take cash so we couldn't go into the castle, but the locals were lovely and with a few "desoles" echoing in our ears we walked around it and down through the famous and beautiful village to the riverside.
Next day, with cash on hand, we walked up again (don't listen to the moaners, it's an easy stroll if you take your time and you should because there's a photo op at every corner) and spent a wonderful hour or two exploring the interior and catching the views. From the top you can look literally straight down to the village about 200m below.
I recommend visiting in June because there were only about 20 other people there, but don't miss it and do start from the bottom unless you are carrying small children.

Located approximately 12 km. from Sarlat . Lovely drive to reach the castle . Gorgeous views from the castle of the surrounding area . Definitely one of the oldest castles we have seen.

We arrived in town and with no indication about parking near the chateau, to save time we walked up the steep hill. We arrived just in time for the last tour and just loved the whole place. There is still a lot of work being done, but the baronial hall was vast and impressive. We continued our walk up and up to the tower and the view was just breathtaking. We could see for miles and it was a beautiful clear day. A tip - you can drive right up the top of the hill but parking is limited. There are two nice looking restaurant cafes and some interesting souvenir shops. The walk up is a bit steep but takes you through an interesting part of the old town, so do it if you can.

This place gives you a good feeling for what it must have been like living in a fortified castle in the 12th century. It was once the domain of King Richard the Lion-hearted (1189-1199), among others. Views from the top are fabulous! Although there is not as much in the way of displays and content as at neighboring Castlenaud, it is still definitely worth a visit.

We toured Castelnaud first, then drove up to the parking on top to visit Beynac. We had lunch in the restaurant opposite the entrance to the chateau (food was not very good, but there aren't many choices up there so it doesn't have to be). There is a sign as you approach the entrance asking you not to leave your dog in the car.... but to bring it with you into the chateau. So we did. How cool is THAT? The castle is beautiful. The setting is beautiful. Really worth the trip. If you rely on a stroller for a child, you will not enjoy the stairs.... there are a lot of stairs. Having said that, the twisting stairways and narrow passages maid it very exciting for our kids.
