“Great place to stay and explore the region”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

Stayed as the 2nd week of a 2 week break in the south of France in May'12.

Having paid so little for the week (250 Euros) myself and my wife were a little unsure of how good the place would be but we had nothing to worry about at all, as it is really very good.

The development is the nicest (from what we could see) of numerous lake side accommodations ranging from camping to static's to apartments and cottages, and was a very pleasant place to stay.

When we arrived we were allocated a 2 bed 2nd floor apartment, having booked a 1 bedroom. To be honest i couldn't see any 1 bed apartments, and i think perhaps they only book them as one beds so as to appear on more searches, although i cant confirm this.

The apartment was very spacious having a large double room and a room with bunk beds. Lots of storage is available, and the balcony is massive. There is a hob, and microwave with grill, kettle, toaster and coffee maker, and a dishwasher which we didn't use. There is no oven, but its more than adequate to be going on with. I would say that there could have been a better selection of utensils, but that's just being picky!

There is a TV with a digibox, but there isnt much other than BBC world in English. If you are so inclined you can plug stuff into the TV. Wifi was 15 Euros for the week and pretty decent, or i think it might be free in the bar area. The bar is quite nice, as is the pool. The later being a lagoon type with a shallow bit for kids.

Now to the area, the lake beach is literally a stones throw from the back (secure) gate of the complex, and i am sure if you have kids it would be excellent. We however went to Biscarosse beach mostly which is about 15 miles away, so 20 minutes in the car or just over an hour on your bike. As an aside ladies, the beaches at Biscarosse and Mimizan are topless if you are so inclined.

If you cycle the area is great for this, there are cycle paths all over the region, basically you have about 1.2k down a very quite road to the start of the nearest off road path in Parentis and then you can go all day with pretty much no need to go on a road or up much of a hill. The ride to Mimizan is very pleasent and is a nice way to spend a day. Its about 45 miles round trip, but dead flat and very easy. Bikes are 7 euros a day to hire or i think 45 a week, but we took our own.

For a day out i would suggest the Dune at Pilat which is an easy 40 mins away in the car, but be prepared for a slog back over it if you go down to the beach, not for the faint hearted!

Parentis is about 1.5k to walk to and is very easy to get to, on Thursdays there is a massive market if that tickles your fancy, also there is a Super U and an intermarche, plus lots of little shops, bars, restaurants for all tastes and prices. if you want a bigger shop, there are plenty in Biscarosse.

The only negatives i can see is that there is zero night life off season when we went, literally none, but we were after a quite relaxing week, so wasn't too fussed, plus the weather was awesome (most days 25+) so the beach was the order of the day which pleased the wife no end! Also there is no AC so if you Dont like the heat at night, take a fan.

We will definitely be leaving it on the list of places to return to.

Room Tip: If you have bikes, ask for an upstairs apartment and you can store your velos on the balcony for saf...

We stayed at Cottages Du Lac in September 2011, We had previously stayed when it opened first a number of years ago and were very impressed then. We were even more impressed on this trip! The site has matured nicely, the cottages (where we stayed) were still in perefct condition. Everythung wirked as it should. There seems to have been significant incvestment on the lake shore with new jettys and walkways now installed. It looks fantastic. Forest paths and village and seaside close by also. All in all a wonferdul peaceful tranquil place. We will be back.

Peace and tranquility in the forest by the lake - you definitely need a car. The directions we were sent got us to our destination, 15 mins from Biscarosse and 10 mins from Parentis-en-Born. The welcome guide was very poor for a large business, however staff were friendly and helpful. Just so you are aware, there is no aircon, hairdryer, iron or board available. It is a very comfortable apartment which is fully equipped. Baguettes are delivered daily to reception to purchase. There are washing/drying facilities available should you require them. The bar is not open late so BYO should you like a night cap. Otherwise, there are some beautful bars down by the lake which you can leisurely walk to/from. It is a very relaxing week to switch off and just to say that it is an extremely quiet location with very little night life. We took day trips to Vieux-Bacau, Bordeaux, Mimizan-sur-Plage (fantastic beach) which were easily accessible from Parentis. There is a really good outdoor market on Thursday morning - worth going to see. Grocery shopping is done in either Biscarosse or Parentis (Hypermarche). A super week for excellent value, well worth a sejour when you are planning your next summer holiday.

Room Tip: Top Floor Apartment

Car essential .

Very relaxing spot for a family holiday. Perfect for a family with small children, nice pool and a beautiful lake/beach 50m away. Perfect warm shallow lake ideal for small kids. Windsurfers and catamarans for rent at a good price (lessons available). A couple of nice restaurants withing walking distance - at the lake. Several more in the town 5mins drive away. Apartments well furnished and nicely decorated. Lots of cycle paths in the vicinity if you rent a bike.

Bread available onsite - good supermarkets 5mins drive away (not walkable with shopping bags).

20min drive to the coast. Miles of beautiful sandy beaches - great waves for surfing or bodyboarding. Loads of inexpensive restaurants at Biscarosse or Mimizan plages.

Only an hour from Bordeaux - a lovely city. 90mins from Biarritz.

Very quiet at night - may not suit older teenagers.

Les cottages du Lac are set in a lovely forest with a lake on site where you can take part in water sports and swimming. The accomodation is new, clean and had everything you need for self catering. There is also a swimming pool for adults and a paddling pool for the small children. There are sports areas for those who like their exercise, bike hire on site, laundry room, reception/cafe/bar.
The town is nearby with 2 big supermarkets. Some good local pubs where you will get to speak to the locals. As the area is so close to the Spanish border we did a lot of exploring of both France and Spain.
We enjoyed out stay and returned for a secong holiday the following year. Would recommend Les Cottages du Lac for those who love the French way of life.

We stayed with 3 individual family groups from our extended family and rented 2 cottages and 1 appartment. We had children from 1 yr up to 16 yrs. Absolutely everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The swimming pool, football area and reception proved major attractions. There were various activities available daily on the Lake and the staff were friendly and helpful. We will all definitely be back.

I have just returned from Cottages du lac and i had a great time. This was my first time to France on holiday as i usually go to Spain/Portugal. After my 10 days in Parentis i realy did not want to leave.I travelled with 4 children ranging in ages from 2 to 10. I found the cottages very comfortable, clean and great value for money. The site which they are on are very clean, lots of greenery, secure for children, Lake with playground, bike hire and water sports was 2 mins away. I will definetly be going back but for longer the next time.
