La Maison de Maitre
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We (Myself, my wife and 21 month old daughter) stayed for a week in July. What a wonderful break!

La Maison de Maitre is set in large grounds, with fantastic views over the neighbouring countryside. The main house occupies the central part of the grounds, with the accommodation being 3 self-contained apartments in a beautifully-converted adjacent barn.

Juliet and Deane were very welcoming hosts who stopped at nothing to ensure that we had a wonderful stay. Anything we needed they would provide, and had usually thought of it before we had. They anticipated our every need.

The apartment was fantastic: Everything has been finished to an extremely high standard and it was very well kitted out. It was luxurious and relaxing. In addition, the apartment had its own secluded dining area outside and barbecue. As an example of the attention to detail that typified La Maison de Maitre, not only was charcoal, firelighters etc provided, but the barbecue was already made up ready for first lighting!

La Maison de Maitre was heaven for our 21-month old, and for us in this respect: Everything we could possibly need, from high-chairs to toys, to armbands, cots, fans and strollers were already available. We literally needed to bring nothing with us! In addition, the facilities for children were wonderful - the orchard to one side of the main house was well populated with swings, slides, sandpits, playhouses and a trampoline.

But further to this, the cellar of the main house, accessible from the main patio overlooking the swimming pool has been converted into series of games rooms, full of toys and games for a range of ages (and adults - e.g. table tennis), and very well maintained. Our daughter could probably have been happily entertained in there all week! For older children, the apartment had an extensive collection of classic DVDs (Disney etc).

The pool itself was wonderful, again, with a large range of inflatables and swimming aids. There was also a small paddling pool which we inflated just outside our apartment (yet another thing that was available to borrow!)

Finally, in addition to catering exceptionally well for children, Juliet and Deane also provided meals on request in the evenings at extra cost. We booked in advance to have this on the first night, as we didn't want the hassle of cooking having just arrived, and ended up having it on a significant number of other evenings, including our last night. The food was absolutely fantastic, and Juliet and Deane would bring it to our own outside dining area, leaving us with no washing up to do! It was such a perfect touch to the evenings.

It is hard to imagine a more relaxing stay and hard to imagine somewhere that caters better for children. We had the best holiday and definitely hope to return!

La Maison de Maitre was such a beatiful and peaceful setting for our family holiday this June.
We were there for 7 nights in the 3 bedroom accommodation, following a fun but tiring trip to Disney!
The facilities were excellent, everything you could think of was provided for babies and children (and adults, thanks for the champagne Juliet and Dean!)
The grounds were always spotlesss, a great indoor and outdoor play area for children of all ages. The swmming pool was a perfect temperature with ample inflatables to entertain everyone.
We couldn't fault this holiday, it was wonderful and we fully intend to go back! It was recommended to us by a friend and we have already recommended it to all of our friends who have children!

Room Tip: The one and three bedroom accommodations share a terrace area, so perfect if going in a small group.

We stayed at La Maison de Maitre in June 2014 and had a brilliant holiday. It was our first trip away as a family with our one year old daughter. The owners, Juliet and Deane, were incredibly friendly and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable (even rescuing us when we got lot on the way there!).

The facilities were excellent. We stayed in the Coco suite which has one bedroom, though there was plenty of room in the living room and on the terraces too. The suite had everything we needed (buggy, toys, towels, cooking equipment) meaning we didn't have to worry about bringing along the kitchen sink.

There was loads to do in the local area (or just a short drive away) including countryside walks, markets, castles; or it was lovely just to spend time by the pool.

I would definitely recommend for a first holiday away.

La Maison de Maitre is a wonderful place for families with small children. We have just spent an idyllic two weeks there with our children and grandchildren: four little ones from four months to three and a half and we just could not have asked for better facilities. As previous reviewers have said, the owners have created a stunning home from home in the most beautiful surroundings. Juliet and Deane are delightful and thoughtful hosts..I am really running out of superlatives! We were blessed with lots of sunshine and the children were able to enjoy the pool and play areas every day. We particularly appreciated the fact that the very young ones could safely wander round the lawn area in full view of our outdoor dining table. The play pushchairs were very nearly worn out by the toddlers! The arrival of eight week old puppies delighted the children too.
We definitely plan to return and would not hesitate to recommend this holiday venue.

Room Tip: Be aware that there are several steps in and around Vionnet. Maybe better for older children.

We have just spent two fantastic weeks at La Maison de Maitre in the Vionnet suite which has 2 bedrooms. It was our first holiday with our 10 month old and we could not have chosen a better place to stay.
We flew to Bergerac and hired a car from Buggs at the airport with a SatNav and rear facing care seat. We found La maison without much difficulty and were delighted by our suite which, as others have already highlighted, has everything you could need for a baby including a little car walker which our son loved! The only things we took were bottles and a sippy cup, everything else is proved including a lovely cot, baby bath, a whole chest of toys, steriliser, changing mat, bath toys....I could go on. Vionnet suite has a lovely private outdoor space with BBQ, table & chairs, a swing and a slide. There are some open steps however there is a stair gate for the top and Juliet has just bought a new guard for the bottom. We had no problems as we were easily able to contain our crawling baby in a safe area using the furniture in the living room!
The communal areas are immaculate, the swimming pool has an incredible view, plenty of sun loungers and large umbrellas and it's heated to a really nice temperate. We swam every day which had the added benefit of making our little one nap very well! There are even more toys and games under the house and a playground to keep children of all ages happy.
Juliet and Deane are fantastic hosts and achieve that difficult balance between being available and helpful without being obtrusive. We enjoyed Julie's home cooking for the first two nights which we would definitely recommend as it's a real treat. There are several supermarkets close by and we visited a number of charming villages with markets and bought beautiful food and a few gifts. The surrounding area is lovely; it's not too touristy but there is still plenty to see and do.
We feel very fortunate to have spent two weeks here and we will be returning as soon as possible.

We have just returned from a week at La Maison de Maitre, our first holiday with our 11 month old. I can't fault this place at all, it is just fantastic - from the most stunning pool which overlooks the beautiful rolling hills of the French countryside, to the accommodation - a fantastic old barn which has been furnished to a very high standard - lovely comfy beds, well equipped kitchen and everything you could need when travelling with a baby. The grounds are beautiful - so well kept, and with a lovely childrens play area. The hosts, Juliet and Deane have really thought of everything - la Maison has clearly been a labour of love for them, and it shows - everything is immaculate. I very much hope we will be back soon! A first holiday with our little one (which I was slightly dreading) was simply brilliant!

This was a fantastic holiday in a beautiful and peaceful setting. The barns are done up immaculately; stylish and classy with everything provided that you could possibly need including equipment for children (prams, baby baths, bottles, cutlery, bowls etc). We hired the whole place all three sections of the barn, for our family of 8 adults and 3 young kids aged 2, 3 and 6. We really liked all being together and having our own space too. Everything is provided for you and nice quality everything. Bed linens and towels etc are all good quality, and pool towels are provided for you with a mid-week change.

The owners are very friendly, and them being available on site is useful. If you take advantage of their cooking it is fantastic! It was great to know they were on hand if you need anything, yet they were very discreet and non-invasive.

The pool is fantastic – 12m, which is bigger than normal holiday villas and is a nice temperature (although some of us weedier ones thought that one or two degrees warmer would be good, for us lounging in / the kids swimming) – the pool safety cover is fast to close, and very secure so you know the children are safe. Dean will kindly open it each morning and help you close it if you have any trouble or are feeling too relaxed to bother! There is a fab games room in the 'cave' under the house right next to the pool with darts for the adults and endless games and toys including pool toys, for the kids. It was so well thought out in every aspect and the three children in our group all had a ball! There are also children's DVDs and games in the accommodation, and a big children's playground onsite, and a safe pond with frogs. Everything has been thought of here!

The local area is ‘upmarket rural’ - tidier than other areas of the South of France such as Provence, and it has many sunflower fields so is worth an explore if you are there mid-summer - but I can strongly recommend just settling in at La Maison de Maitre with a good book, wine (you might be able to buy some from Dean and Juliet if you give them a bit of warning) some local bread and cheese, and some of Dean and Juliet’s fantastic catering, and bed in for the week by the pool!

It is extremely hard to find any negatives. The only couple of things we thought of were... 1) as tall people, we would ideally like a king sized bed in every room. However this is a small point and the current double beds are actually very comfortable and we slept really well. 2) In terms of communal dining the outdoor table is great but doesn’t get the evening sun, and in inclement weather, an indoor dining option that would seat everyone would also be brilliant but obviously they have to work within the confines of the barn space. Perhaps they could remove some of the furniture (the dresser), or rearrange things, to allow more space around the big table in Lartigue allowing easier indoor dining. 3) could do with a small coffee table on the ‘deck’ to encourage you to use it more for aperitifs. We ended up not using it as much as we thought we might. 4) A floorplan on the website would be really helpful so you could plan who sleeps where (especially if you have hired all three units and have a mix of kids and adults to think about).

But these are tiny points in an otherwise perfect holiday venue! We would definitely go back as it is very hard to find accommodation of this quality to fit a big group.

Room Tip: All the units are equally beautiful and are exactly as described on the website. Hire all three tog...

Hi Katy, thanks for your lovely review. You have made some really good suggestions + I hope you will be pleased to learn that we have made some changes for 2014 to make La Maison de Maitre an even better experience! The master bedrooms in all 3 suites have king sized beds, + the second bedrooms have extra long doubles. Vionnet now caters for the indoor dining option seating 12+ people. The dresser in Lartigue has been re-located to allow more space around the dining table. Pool temperatures are around 27 degrees. We are planning to add a table to the sun deck. Would love to see you back again one day. Kind regards Juliet
