Auberge de l'Etang Bleu
Reviewed 17 September 2011

Beautiful rustic hotel in a very peaceful location. The food is excellent, we did eat out one night when we couldn't face another five course meal, we'd really recommend the pizza restaurant in Mareuil, L'Olive Noire. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and made our stay extra special. We stayed for four nights and enjoyed visiting local towns and Chateux's, Brantome is really worth a visit. We did feel that the grounds of the hotel are a little run down, although this does add to the rustic charm. The grounds could be beautiful with a little work, but we still enjoyed relaxing by the lake.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel have a balcony, I wish we'd had one!

We stayed here to be near our friends, who are renovating a house nearby, and it was recommended by them.It was absolutely lovely.Set in beautiful grounds, the hotel is more like a grand hunting lodge than a Logis.I can only agree with previous reviewers on food, decor etc.You would really need a car whilst here as it is in the back of beyond but oh,so peaceful.Hope to return one day.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights during our honeymoon, when most hotels in the Dordogne region were either too expensive or booked (we didn't plan ahead). We really loved the place overall -- the huge property is peaceful and gorgeous (though a bit run), with ducks quacking their heads off in the large pond. The owners are super friendly, and a little weird (we said we weren't having breakfast, yet there was still a table ready in the morning with our room number on it, with the orange jug filled! the decor was also super kitschy), which just makes the place feel private and odd and awesome.

The dinner was AMAZING -- one of the most memorable of our trip. It was the most butter I've ever eaten in one meal, but it was truly spectacular. The wine lists are quite pricey (as is the whole dinner -- I was annoyed that there were pretty much no other dinner options nearby), but it was excellent (aged in their cellar downstairs) and worth it.

The downsides are that the rooms are tiny and a bit dated, and the hotel is really in the middle of nowhere. And the owners' dogs are stinky and roam everywhere (my husband loved them though). Recommended overall!

Tranquil, relaxing, welcoming - and affordable -the Auberge de l'Etang Bleu is all of these things. It is set in parkland overlooking a lake. The rooms are a good size, the beds comfortable. We stayed two nights half-board, and dinner on the terrace on both nights from an extensive menu was a true celebration. Or you could eat in the magnificent dining room where breakfast is served. It is a three-chimney Logis but could well qualify for the Logis d'Exception label. A notice in the bedroom warns that theTV is subject to "caprice" - French for "almost impossible to control". Ask Madame for the secret and she will reply "My husband". And indeed her co-owner/chef was despatched to reboot it - an ebullient performance that made us glad we had to call for help. One niggle - both nights at dinner the amuse bouche was cold ratatouille - and on one of those nights the veg was hot ratatouille! But otherwise it was flawless.

The setting is wonderful, in a lovely park by the water. Fantastic meals are served on the terrace by attentionate staff. The decoration of the bedrooms is rather dated, but they are clean.

Stayed here for the first 4 nights of a 2-week Dordogne vacation. What a lovely place, if you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place to be. It is a home that looks hundreds of years old but isn't, set in a wonderful park including 2 lakes. It has a terrace where wonderful meals are being served. Staff/service: extremely nice and friendly. The nice traditional rooms (I do love the toile de Jouy) are clean and have a balcony (not all). If you want to see things or dine elsewhere you really do need a car. Brantome is about 15 mins away by car.

Traveling between Tours and Carcassonne France, we stopped in the little village of Vieux-Mareuil for the night. The first Hotel we spotted was the Hostellerie de l'Auberge de L'Etang. Small, but very clean, the hotel was the perfict place for a nights rest off the highway. Friendly, helpful staff, Very good breakfast. A nice place to stay.
