“Vintage weekend in Chablis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

The location of the hotel is superb, just in the center of Chablis, no need to use your car, because all good cafes, bars, restaurants, domaines and degustaion places are in walking distance, really close. Plus, on Sunday the local market just in front of the hotel, where you can see different specialties of the region and other different staff. Also if you interested in walking you can visit all the Gran Cru vineyards around, it will take about 1h30min, but unforgettable experience of the region.

Hotel as the most of the vintage hotels, nice, quiet with it is own atmosphere and romance(no elevator), so if you planning to stay in this hotel, make sure that you dont have heavy laggage with you. Breakfast is a typical french, no big choice. The staff is very nice and welcoming. I really recommend this hotel if you planning your weekend in Chablis.

Room Tip: In the hotel all the rooms with the nice view of the Chablis streets.

This hotel is in fantastic position just off the main square in CHablis. A beautiful old building which is now rather faded in grandeur. Our room was a good size, clean and bright. Breakfast was buffet, oddly laid out on trays. Tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms, bar access and opening hours in middle of winter were hard to work out. Given it was winter and a lot if the restaurants were shut, we were reserved a table in a very good place which was open.
You will either love or hate the faded ambience and decor of this hotel.
It's pretty good price which may help you decide.

This one is so difficult. The hotel is so nice, the room we had great, but it could be even better. The saddest thing is that my understanding is that the owner has decided to close the doors at the end of 2012, as the place needs serious investment in order to cope with the challeges ahead. This is a real shame, because the location could not be better, and with a little help the hotel could be perfect.

We booked a 'superior suite' which was not cheap, and we a little surprised that it was not in the main hotel. It turned out to be one floor of a little cottage, a Gite, just round the corner. Not a problem for us, but you do feel a little isolated from the hotel. Our room was the first floor, up some steep stone stairs, and it was positively lovely, if a little cluttered. Lovely bed, nice bathroom with a shower and separate hot tub and a little kitchen area (which other than the fridge we could have done without). Clearly a lot of love and care had gone into furnishing, maybe too much as every surface was busy. But we loved the room.

Breakfast is extra and served in the hotel dining room. This is again very pleasant and gives you a chance to see the main building. Breakfast is a typically French affair, with good coffee, bread, cheese and eggs. Well worth the €7.50.

Sitting in the hotel lounge one morning, your eyes wander and you get to understand a little of the economics of the place. The lady owner has clearly tried hard not only to make a success of this historic building, but bring tourism to Chablis. The place is littered with photos and stories of her work, and I could happily spend hours reading, looking and relaxing.

To me, the main issue is that the tourists just don't come to Chablis in enough numbers, or maybe for long enough, to make it worthwhile for the hoteliers and restauranteurs. It is almost as if the town is an afterthought, a stopping off place to buy some excellent wine, on the way to, or from, the Alps, or the South, or Spain. The motorway system is not particularly kind to Chablis if you are, as we were, coming from Austria and Switzerland. This lovely hotel needs bums on beds, and for more than one night. We stayed three, and loved the area and particularly its wines.

But back to the hotel. Would we stay again? Yes, of course, given the opportunity. I really hope the hotel is not lost to us and other travellers in the future. It is lovely, and could easily become a gem.

Room Tip: Choose from what is on offer on arrival. If you don't mind being away from the main building, t...

I don't know what room some of the other reviewers stayed in but we had a suite on the first floor with a small balcony which was just perfect. The bathroom was roomy by French standards & the decor was tasteful & elegant. We did not meet Nicole but her stamp was all over the breakfast which we judged to be one of the best of our trip. We ate at the Bistrot des Grands Crus which was a great deal for a great meal! The house Chablis was really good!

Room Tip: Take a suite!

The Bergerand is centrally located and is decorated in a very old fashioned and typically French style. The rooms have been updated to include en-suite facilities but they have been 'fitted in' to the existing fabric of the building so this is never going to be a modern 5* lodging. There is no air conditioning but we were cool enough during a very hot period. Waking up to the smell of the boulangerie across the road was a welcome alarm call.

Breakfast is a buffet and unexceptional for the money.

Room Tip: Madame will show you around and allow you to choose.

Spent 2 nights here but should have been 1. Room strange due to toilet being a late add on to make this room an en suite. Once you used the toilet, that was like an aircraft toilet, you had to wash your hands in a sink that was at the other side of the room. Fair enough it's an old building but with a little more thought could have been much better. Better value accommodation in Chablis for the price. We visited quite a few degustations while in Chablis but this hotel charged us for a tasting. We did not buy any wine here.

The owner, Nicole de Merteuil, is a "character" - which means that the hotel has some distinct oddities - like a reception desk that is only staffed for four hours a day (they give you a code to get in at other times); that breakfast may be accompanied by quiet recorded lute music; that you will find a warning message in your bathroom that the hot water may take several minutes to run warm in this charming but faded old building; and that the restaurant that is advertised on the outside does not serve lunch or dinner. It also seems to mean that one's experience of the place depends on what Madame's mood happens to be. In the two days that we were there she was generally charming, but also showed a frosty side. The hotel's website - with the tell-tale URL ilovechablis.com - actually describes it as a guest house, and that is probably more accurate than "hotel", despite its size. This is fine if you want to be treated as the house guest of a quirky host, but we never felt really comfortable here.
