“Idyllic- a perfect 3 star Logis”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Everybody has an idea of what a perfect French country hotel should be: In a pretty village, friendly welcome, spotlessly clean, a terrace/pool area for outdoor dining etc. Auberge is all of the above plus a terrific restaurant and wine list. The owners are keen walkers and cyclists and happy to suggest routes. Their route to Chateau Cheverny (well worth a visit) was wonderful. We booked an upgrade to a Balneo room-well worth the extra for the space and hydro bath. We loved it. Chitenay was the birthplace of Denis Papin (inventor of the steam engine). There was a celebration weekend when we were there-steam cars, engines etc from all round the world-which was great fun

Room Tip: Choose a Balneo room

We stayed as part of a cycling holiday as a group of eight. The exterior is typical of a rural French hotel. The rooms are functional and relatively basic even when upgraded. The food is good and plentiful. The village itself is small and very quiet but pretty. Worth a stay but not luxurious.

We last visited this hotel 20 years ago and made our booking with high expectations. Rather than a 'superior' room we upgraded to a 'Balneo' with wellness centre access.
The room was dirty in places. Cobwebs on the ceiling, hair and dust in drawers, the hydro bath pumped out black dirt and had the impression of not being used for some time. The Wellness centre was closed and no mention made of this facility.
Dinner was excellent but having opted for half board we rather felt as though we were less important than full a la carte diners - there was a marvellous cheese board going round but our selection of cheese for desert was met with three modest pieces of cheese delivered on a plate - no choice from the board.
Having had happy memories of the Auberge, which we believe to be in the same family ownership as our last visit, we expected better, but probably most disappointing was the lack of care afterwards. We left feedback in the room and invited them to follow up with us. Having heard nothing we e-mailed to seek their comments but again no follow up or care.
Location for the Loire is great, the breakfast was great and the quality of the food was excellent.

Room Tip: Don't choose the Balneo

Very comfortable room with slightly eccentric decoration details. Very friendly and helpful staff and, what looked like, a beautiful garden (never really warm enough to use it). Only criticism is the food which is not I fear as good as it seems to think it is. Felt a bit mass produced and slightly stale.

Just the sort of reception you need at the end of a damp 13 mile damp walk from Blois! Welcoming Patron, perfect shower ( the best in France this year) ,wonderful food throughout and , if the sun would appear, the garden looks lovely with quiet spots scattered around the large expanse of grass and shrubs.
Gilles ,the owner, even gave us a lift to the Chateau of Beauregard on our day off. I can think of no downside to this gem in the Loire valley. Just go and lap up the ambiance and the food!

Room Tip: The rooms at the rear overlook the wonderful garden

We have stayed here four times in the past fifteen years, and each time it has got better and better. Very comfortable room, with plenty of lights where they were needed, separate loo and excellent shower room. Impeccable evening meal - good menu, excellent cooking and presentation, and discreet and efficient service - and then a superb breakfast the following morning. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. We shall certainly return, and hope next time to stay longer.

We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with 4friends cycling in the area. The staff were very helpful and charming. The owner was amazing, insisting we tried different wines each evening to compare to the ones my husband had chosen! Together with the very good food, we all had a vey memorable time, the garden was a delightful venue to sip champagne in the Indian summer evening after a days cycling. We stayed in the annex which was fine and the cycling parking was well organised. We would definitely return as we then stayed elsewhere the following night - we missed this auberge!
