“The Tuscany of Sicily”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2013

What a beautiful area, nice hotel, fabulous winery and first-class restaurant.

We got there around sunset and strolled around the grounds, which are absolutely stunning. Rows and rows of grapevines, old gnarly olive trees, stone walls. After touring Sicily's coast for a few days, I really felt like I had been magically transported to somewhere else--the landscape reminded me a lot of Tuscany.

It was too cold to use the pool (we were there in September) but it's beautiful and there's a bar out there, which I assume serves drinks, though there was no one manning the bar then, probably because of the season.

Davide, the owner's son made us feel welcomed and picked out an incredible wine to complement our dinner. Carmelo, the chef cooked up some incredible black ink spaghetti with sea urchins and fresh lamb chops. Also had great cured meats from local black pigs.

Nice, quiet place--great escape!

This is actually 3 places on one site: Winery, Restaurant and Hotel. We were able to enjoy all three!

We came here for a wine tasting and lunch which we had booked with Wine Tour In Sicily which we had also found here on Trip Advisor. After the visit and lunch, and before heading off to the next winery of the day we changed our trip plans and booked a room here for 2 nights!

Winery (Cantine Gulfi):
The winery visit is beautiful and Laura was a wonderful guide. All of the wines are organic and they were all delicious. They have a great selection and we loved their Carjcanti white. We had the great luxury of tasting the wines with a meal…

Restaurant (Ristorante Gulfi):
There aren't a lot of Michelin starred restaurants in Sicily outside of Ragusa Ibla, Modica or Taormina. But this should be the next one!

The food is excellent thanks to both the primary ingredients and the chef (Carmelo Floridia) and his team. After our first 4 course lunch we decided to stay here. We had 5 course lunches and dinners and the chance to taste quite a variety of the dishes on their menu. This was, by far, the best meals we had in Sicily and ranks highly with the French Michelin restaurants we have been to throughout the years. The beautiful presentation, the perfect preparation and the mix of authentic Sicilian flavours make this wonderful for everything from a simple lunch of hams, salamis and cheeses through to a full 5 or 6 course dinner of salad, soup, pasta, fish or meat and desserts.

The simplest of recipes and ingredients were remarkable: the tomato soup with just a touch of Ricotta and basic, the ravioli with Ricotta and basil in a simple tomato sauce and even the palate cleanser of granite and cubed vegetables was memorable.

Cooking Class
We were lucky enough to have a full cooking class with Chef Carmelo Floridia and all of his team. Google him...

We learned an awful lot and prepared some amazing dishes. Afterwards we ate all that we had prepared, and more, for lunch. Amazing!!!

Hotel (Locanda Gulfi):
We stayed here for 2 nights in a beautiful double room with all the amenities. The room and the location were quiet as the site is basically in the middle of nowhere. But it is a great place for walks and hikes through the vines, up the hills, under the olive trees, next to the sheep and the cows with the constant smell of lavender and thyme from the sides of the roads and paths. We went hiking each day to either build up our appetite or work off all that we had eaten. There is a beautiful huge swimming pool, just a bit off to the side of the hotel, with lounge chairs on the sides for suntanning. We swam lengths each day as well. The pool is atop the hill and overlooks the valley and the vines. The whole site is on the top of the hill and with panoramic views.

The plumbing could use a bit of work and they need to finish the work on the path from the hotel to the pool.

We must say that we had the incredible luxury of being practically the only guests on site and had the pool to ourselves, the restaurant to ourselves, the cooking class to ourselves and received the full VIP treatment throughout. This was during the last week of August.

Do not start your Sicilian holidays here… it will ruin your appreciation of the food and relaxation, or lack thereof, everywhere else.

5 stars all the way.......a truly wonderful boutique hotel - Locanda Gulfi which has an excellent restaurant overlooking the Gulfi winery and vineyards. One can enjoy the Award Winning Organic Wines accompanied by a scrumptious lunch or dinner prepared by the talented chef Carmelo and his dedicated team. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a relaxing time in wonderful surroundings and has a passion for good wines.............Kevin Portelli

We came across the restaurant by recommendation & we impressed enough to return for the 'Wine Weekend Package' with our spouses. Locanda Gulfi is also the home of the all organic Gulfi winery. Small boutique hotel perched on a hill in the middle of the countryside a few minutes drive from Chiaramonte. Had some great meals prepared by chef Carmelo Florida - an afternoon in the kitchen with Carmelo changed my appreciation of how much hard work & TLC goes on in the kitchen. Thanks to Davide Catania we had some memorable moments - from impeccable wine recommendations in the restaurant to a most enjoyable tour of the neighbouring vineyards. One of the most persistent memories is sitting in the courtyard at around midnight when the locanda had wound down - you can literally hear the sound of silence. That was some well needed R&R - grazie Davide, grazie Carmelo & to your teams who looked after us so well.
