Ruud and Christine, both from Holland, bought this country home a decade or so ago, single-handedly run it as a country inn much of the year, and rent out the entire home in the summer. They are very friendly, helpful and attentive and happy to engage in conversation. Their two dogs and cat are equally friendly. We felt very much like we were visiting family with home in the countryside of Provence, and Villa Mas St Jean was our group’s favorite stay on our trip through various regions of France.

The rooms are simply decorated, very comfortable and offer nice bathroom fixtures and amenities. The dining room has one, large communal table where you can meet and chat with other guests (there are few, since there are only a few rooms) over breakfast. If you request it at least one day in advance, Ruud will cook up a dinner for you. They advertise this as a 3-course meal, but we requested a lighter supper, and they brought us a very tasty and healthy appetizer, fresh fish entrée and fruit tart dessert, all homemade.

The grounds of the Villa are just gorgeous, with a large lawn dotted with various trees, flowers and a swimming pool. Sit on the outdoor patio and enjoy the view, or stroll through the garden.

Villa Mas St Jean is a PERFECT location if you plan to visit the various villages of Provence near Avignon. You can head West to Noves, down to St. Remy de Provence (where you should be sure to walk the pedestrian streets in the ver center to visit the shops and restaurants), then on to Les Baux de Provence, a hillside castle and village that is a bit touristy but very scenic. On another day, head Northeast to the Luberon region, where you can visit popular, gorgeous villages including Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux and Ménebres. (L’Isle Sur la Sorgue is a natural first stop but is more of a tourist trap, but you may enjoy the antique shops on the South side of the river in the center of town.)

Some complain that Villa Mas St Jean is difficult to find. The trick is to head South of Avignon along D7N, toward Noves. Skip the first turn-off toward Noves that occurs just after crossing the river, and head to the second turn-off toward Noves (D26). There, turn LEFT onto D26, AWAY from Noves. Shortly after, D26 splits in two, and you must stay left. The Villa is only a couple of kilometers farther, on the right side of the road, and is identifiably by the long white wall that encloses it.

Room Tip: Ask Ruud and Christine to recommend rooms suitable for your party size and preferences. The family room is very spacious, the others smaller but perfectly comfortable.

Wonderful place, real Provance villa. Perfect location to visit Avignon,Arles, Nimes, St. Remy and all Luberon villages. We stay for 5 nights and it was the best hotel we stayed in Provance ( we were in other 3 hotels).
Very quite place, and also only few minutes from the main roads and motorway. Clean and comfortable room ( we was in double room with garden view), real good and rich breakfast. Lovely and very flriendly owners, speak very good English.
