There is a great deal of choice at Bajo de Guia in Sanlucar with a dozen restaurants in a row vying for your custom. We chose Casa Juan randomly - not too busy and not too empty on a Saturday lunchtime in October. The food was great, really fresh Frito Variada to share as a starter with anchovies, salmonitas, dog fish bites and some tiny flat fish. For our main courses we had two versions of monkfish - grilled on a brocheta and in the local Sanluquen sauces of onions, garlic and tomatoes. Total bill including aperitifs, wine and coffees was €55 -not bad at all. Great views of the estuary and the landing craft ferrying 4x4s over to the nature reserve opposite. Well worth a visit but I'm sure their nearby competitors are just as good.

Don't expect haute cuisine or quick service - this is a very busy bar restaurante which does excellent value set meals both at lunchtime (8.50 euros) and evenings (9.80 euros). If you want some privacy, this is not for you, but if you want to enjoy a simple, good value meal cheek-by-jowl with lots of local people, this is just fine!

The food was great, Gambas al ajillo, 6E as opposed to 8 and 10 elsewhere. We also tasted Ortiguillas for the first time, they were advertised everywhere as a delicacy, "frescas de la mar". They were ok, tasted a bit like fried oysters, they are actually bitesize tapas of jellyfish! Yes, I recommend you try them at least once, but, just take two bites and swallow, do Not cut with fork and knife, otherwise, you"l never finish your plate!
The very best thing about la Casa Juan is the very friendly staff. The waiters are the best in Sanlúcar. Don't get me wrong I just love the place but, somehow, not everyone is as friendly as we think they should be with tourists. And we are fluent in Spanish too!

I've been there about twice a week during 3 years, for professional reasons (1998/2001) and then almost once a year since. Last visit was during May 2012.

It has a lot to offer.
-in or outdoor lounge with enjoyable sights.
-extraordinarily kind and sympathetic owners and staff.
-very good pricing.
-fish and seafood that you can find only in this particular area (acedias de Sanlucar : small and tasty flatfish, coquinas : small garlic-stuffed shellfish, and many, many more)
-during the spring, get amazed by colourful "Rocio" (huge religious pilgrimage including hundred thousands people wearing typical garments as well as thousands of horses ridden or pulling carriages, Jeeps, curious amphibious hybrid vehicles and more...)

    • Atmosphere
