“Excellent hotel, nice staff, very friendly”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

After the debacle of the Hotel du Peras, we found this little gem of a hotel in the heart of St Jean du Gard. No effort was too much, Room was clean and light. We left our luggage in the lobby to go for a little train ride on the local steam train (recommended) to visit Anduze and the Bamboo garden (the train stops there). Our luggage had been put into the room, and we had been told that we could just take the key to the room from the board if nobody was at reception. The breakfast was excellent and again, we had some queries about the last part of our walking trip to Ales, which the owner answered with suggestions as to how to avoid walking the wrong way. All in all a very positive experience, highly recommended.

It's rare to find such a peaceful in the location in the centre of a town. The public areas and our room were absolutely spotless, and the garden is lovely for relaxing on a fine day. Our room looked out over the garden and swimming pool, and was very comfortable and quiet. Our hosts were extremely welcoming and attentive, and gave good advice on what to see and do, where to eat, etc.

Although the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, there is a very good one next door, and plenty of choice within a few minutes walk.

If we return to this area, we will certainly go back to Les Bellugues.

Room Tip: Even numbered rooms look out over the garden.

We stayed for a week at Les Bellugues and on arrival were immediately made to feel welcome by Pascal who explained the hotel to us and advised us where to eat that Monday evening, when a number of restaurants were shut. Les Bellugues has been created in one of the last silk spinning “filatures” of which there were once some 24 in St Jean du Gard alone. The rooms, all more or less alike, are simple, light and modern and have everything needed. No fridge in the room but a general one in the breakfast area with cold beers and soft drinks on an honesty basis. Outside there is ample parking and a pleasant garden with lawn, palm trees, pool, sun-loungers and tables and chairs. And shade – a good place to retreat to in the middle of the day.

Breakfasts are French classics, excellent in every detail. Good coffee, juice, croissants, jams and local honey, and delicious chestnut flour bread, for which Pascal and Yves have a special order each day from the boulangerie and will order it for you too if you wish, for your picnic. In town there is a choice of restaurants which Pascal can advise you on and will make bookings for you each evening. Though relatively new there, he and Yves are evidently well known and popular in St Jean du Gard.

Indeed, what makes Les Bellugues stand out is that the two of them go that extra mile to look after their visitors and ensure they have a good stay. Knowing we’d come for a walking holiday, they lent us a local walks book for the duration and were able advise us on what the various local attractions were like, over and above what websites tell you. While we were there another guest was taken off to hospital and Yves drove his wife the 28km each way to visit him, staying until the early hours to drive her back again. The next day he went another 26km return to pick up medication, the St Jean du Gard pharmacie being shut on Sunday.

St Jean du Gard makes a good base for walking and is interesting in other respects; its silk producing past, its strong – and rebellious – Protestant history, chestnut trees and all their products. And le petit train à vapeur, whose whistle punctuated our walks as it chugged its way several times a day between St Jean and Anduze, another small town well worth a visit.

This is a lovely hotel situated right in the centre of town, yet in a haven of quiet.
The new owners make each individual feel right at home, and were helpful well beyond the call of duty to us.
The décor is very simple but functional.
(The only "warning" I would mention to future travelers is to sit down for breakfast well before you are hungry because the service can be slow.... but this is not to put people off, just to avoid hunger pangs in the morning.)

Room Tip: Hmm, the odd numbered rooms face over the parking lot. This is not noisy but gets hot sun in the mor...

My wife and I rented a house on the Gardon River just outside Saint-Jean-du-Gard several years ago when we were traveling with our two sons. This time we were on our way from Switzerland to Carcassone and wanted to revisit Saint-Jean. The hotel owners were most gracious and the pool was absolutely fantastic. The car park was close and convenient with plenty of room for all of the guests. Free wifi allowed us to stay in touch with my bother and sisters who were also traveling in Spain and France. The room was simple, but very comfortable and the shower was great. We both really enjoyed the breakfast, with outstanding croissants and local preserves.

The new owners are welcoming, personal and helpful. Rooms are small and simple, but great for families, bunkbeds for the kids. The location in the center of town couldn't be better, yet quiet and calm with a lovely garden and great swimming pool. Free wifi. Thanks to Yves and Pascal for a great three day stay in the Cevennes.
