“Perfect for exploring island!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

Very good value. Huge rooms and lovely grounds. We stayed for 3 days prior to a cruise to see the island, we picked up a hire car at the airport . The journey is simple from the airport (we did have a sat nav) and although there isn't a lot of parking at the hotel there is plenty of parking on the street. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a bar over the road as there isn't one at the hotel, it did like nice from the outside, and always busy, but we didn't actually make it over there as we ate each night in the hotel in the 'training dining room'. The food was excellent , 3 course meal with wine for 10 euros fantastic value even if the service was a little 'basic' (they are training!!!). Reception staff helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend as a a base with a car to see the island. Don't be fooled by the weather in Santa Brigida, as it is high up and near mountains , when you get down to the coast it is like a different country!! We will definitely stay again.

A just lovely stay near the Caldera de Bandama.
I specially enjoyed an exotic garden (with swimming pool) and delicious breakfast. An excellent service!
The only problem concerned a slow WI FI connection.

We visited the hotel restaurant for lunch. Escuela means school and the restaurant is run to provide experience for trainees. It is set in lovely gardens and was very peaceful. We parked easily in the street running along the back of the hotel. When we arrived at 1:30pm, we were the only guests in the restaurant. Having had such an enjoyable meal we couldn't understand why!

There was a small but well chosen menu and the fixed price for lunch was 10 euros for 3 courses - what a bargain! This price also included a bottle of wine. The waiting staff were very attentive and offered us complimentary appetisers before our starters. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and wanted to share this hidden gem with other visitors!

Stayed here as a couple in jan 2014. The service was excellent and the rooms very comfortable. Yes there are staff training in this hotel and this is not a problem. If anything it resulted in better service all round. A lovely bar/restaurant just across the road is also very friendly. great value. Wiil go again.

Stayed here for 1 night as part of a five-day walking tour of Gran Canaria. Walked 6 h from Cruz de Tejeda to the village of Santa Brigida - but there was no Hotel Santa Brigida to be found! This was the fault of my Kompass "wanderkarte" which showed the hotel (named!) about 500 m outside the village. In fact, it's about 4 km outside the village, near Tafira Alta on the GC-15. This road is so busy as to be unwalkable by those with a desire to live. Luckily, I was given a lift in a two-seater sports car by an off-duty Canarian policewoman - one of those random, unexpected events that are the hallmark of independent travel. Anyway, none of this was the fault of the hotel, although perhaps the name is confusing.

The hotel was, as expected for a 4-star establishment, very nice and my room, although small, was excellent. I paid £48 in advance for B&B. It was all very quiet, however, and, as others have pointed out, it seemed strange that there was no bar. Instead, to get my well earned cold beer, I had to cross the world's busiest road again - the hotel is right on the GC-15 - to a bar opposite, which I liked so much that I decided to return to for an inexpensive dinner rather than eat in the hotel. The hotel breakfast the following morning was very good, as you would expect, although I could detect for the first time that some of the staff were trainees (the "School" in the hotel's full name, presumably).

General:
We later discovered that the hotel doubles up as a training school so half the staff are actually student trainees. Had we known a bit of Spanish, we would have seen "Escuela" which means "School".

Location:
Located at the north side of the island on very high ground. Good in the summer because it is cool. Bad in the in Winter season because it is very cold and rainy. It is in a small village with virtually nothing around so you are guaranteed a good night's sleep. It is approx 45 mins to 1 hour to Maspalomas Beach and is a pain to have to drive every day. However, it is close to Las Palmas (20 minutes driving) but bear in mind that free parking is almost impossible to find!

Parking:
Amazingly this 4-star hotel does NOT have a parking lot. There is roadside parking in front of the hotel but because it is located on a busy road it is very difficult to park here unless you get an end spot. The roads around the back of the hotel is a one-way system. There are 5 parking spaces behind the hotel but these are often occupied. There is a side road which joins the main road but the stupid thing is, you can only drive UP this road and can not turn into it if you have come up the back road. So if you come up the back road and the popular spaces are full, you then have to make a big detour around the one-way system, come back out to the roundabout and enter the busy road once again. This detour takes 2 mins and is a big pain in the butt.

Internet / Wi-Fi:
There is one internet computer in reception for use. Wi-Fi is free but extremely flaky and unreliable. I was forced to buy a local Spanish sim card just so I could use reliable 3G internet!!

TV: Only 6 foreign channels (3 English, 2 German and 1 French). Certainly not cable TV.

And now for the problems with the hotel which we personally experienced...

We booked a room with a double bed. Instead we got a twin room instead. The beds were effectively hospital beds which moved quite easily. Not a great sleeping experience.

For the first few nights, we did not realise any problems. We noticed that the bedsheets were not changed but we thought it was hotel policy not to change the bedsheets on a daily basis. It was the evening of Thursday 21 November when we noticed the sloppily made beds and we noticed that the bedsheets were still unchanged because the stain on my bedsheet was still in the same place with the same mark pattern! We decided to complain about the state of the room at this stage because the room was also not dusted and the floor was dirty. The girl at reception started to insist that we let someone into the room to clean it. We pointed out that it was already 9pm and we wanted to relax but she was continuing to insist until I called and put a stop to it.

In the morning, we spoke with the lady who was in charge of the reception. She could understand English and was in a position to assist. She came to inspect the room with us and saw the photos which we took. She was in full agreement that the room was in an unacceptable state and arranged to have it properly cleaned and dusted. She also confirmed to us the bed linen, towels, glasses should all be changed daily, and the whole room dusted and waxed. This big spring cleaning was done on Friday.

As a means of compensation, we were offered a complimentary dinner in the hotel restaurant and the last night would not be charged. We decided to accept her offer but the dinner arrangement was a disaster (read on).

Unfortunately, the bad room cleaning service continued until the very last day. The following is a detailed diary of the issues which we experienced.

Thursday 21 Nov:
Sloppily made beds
Bedsheets not changed since arrival
Dust on floors and other surfaces
Inconsistent towels (sometimes 2 big towels, sometimes 1 big and 1 small towels)

Sunday 24 Nov: The dinner disaster
We decided to take up the lady's offer of a complimentary dinner in the hotel restaurant. We arrived at 8pm and I asked the waiter if they were informed about us. He said he had no information about us at all and said he will ask Rceeption. We sat down and waited 45 minutes for the waiter to inform us. After 45 minutes we got sick of waiting and asked him what was happening. At this point, he finally asked Reception to call the lady in charge (who was off work). But this was already too long for us and we decided to leave because we were too hungry to wait. The lady in charge was confused why we left but we later explained what happened. She was also shocked that we were left waiting for 45 minutes.

Thursday 28 Nov:
We had problems with the breakfast service today. We arrived at 10.00am and we took a window table which was half prepared (it had fresh napkins and clean knife & forks). We brought our food back to the table and my wife also put a full glass of orange juice on the table. Next, we went to get our coffee/tea. When I started to walk back I saw a girl in black uniform clearing our table! She saw me and asked if it was our table. I said yes and she asked me if I wanted a clean plate which I said yes. She never brought me a clean plate. In the end I had to get a new plate myself from another table. The stupid thing about this situation was, the table next to us was full of finished plates and she could have cleaned that other table first. What is more stupid was, it was very obvious that our table was not needing to be cleaned because the food on the plates were not eaten and the orange juice glass was full.

In the evening we found that our drinking glasses (in the bedroom) were not changed. Whoever cleaned the room just rinsed one glass and left it upside down in the bathroom. The other glass was not cleaned at all. The bath was not cleaned and the TV surface was dusty which meant it was not dusted.

Friday 29 Nov:
We came back in the evening to find:

Beds sloppily made up.
TV still not dusted.
My wife had used 1 bathroom glass (the small ones) the previous night and it was not changed.
Floor not dusted.
Bath still not cleaned.

Saturday 30 Nov:
We complained about the bath to a man at Reception. He said he would make sure that the room would be properly cleaned today and said he would call me. I never received a call during the day.

When we arrived back to the hotel in the evening the bath was STILL not cleaned. My wife got very upset and we went down once more to the reception and showed the girl at reception (the same girl who insisted that we let someone clean our room at 9pm in the evening) a photo of the dirty bath. The girl asked a cleaner to check the room. The cleaner called and said she could not see the problem. So my wife went up to show her.

Later, I asked my wife what happened. The reception girl had said to her that the cleaner could not see the problem with the bath. My wife deduced that she had wiped away the dirt and then called reception to say she could not see the problem. Basically she had wiped away the evidence and pretended that the bath was clean.

General Comments:
In addition to the bad room cleaning service, we were also not very impressed by the restaurant. Every day we saw that the staff were very slow to clean and prepare the tables for new guests. The plates were wet from the dishwasher and quite often we would have to get our own table cutlery and napkins. The breakfast system was also very inefficient. Staff would have to bring top-ups BY HAND. Have they never heard of trolleys?? As a result, food is slow to top up when empty.

As for dinner service, we appreciate that Spanish people take their evening meal much later but the restaurant was only open for dinner between 8pm to 10pm. This is simply unacceptable. There is no bar which is a glaring hole for a 4-star hotel.

Heating in our room did not work and we had to use the extra woolen blanket. Since it was the cold season we did not know if the aircon works but I suspect it does not.

I have to say, we were very disappointed by the continuous problems despite our numerous complaints. These types of incidents do not give a professional impression of a 4-star hotel and honestly speaking, we would not recommend the hotel to anyone.

Moreover we felt that the hotel is more suited to Spanish-speaking guests. We just felt a lack of international spirit for serving an international community. What was more disappointing was that we never got a response from the hotel manager after we emailed her our negative experiences.

The only member of staff whom we felt thankful to was the lady in charge of reception who helped us with many things outside of the hotel. In the end she simply could not control what happens with room cleaning or the restaurant service.

p.s. I have just read a review from panpan85 whose bed linen were also not changed in 1 week!
