“Base for WW1 battlefields”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

This is my third visit to this hotel and the standards of food are of the same excellent quality. The room I occupied in the Beaujolis section Bouilly was spacious and comfortable. The shower was powerful and large. There is plenty of parking (avoid under the trees used by birds with the inevitable to paint work). It is very quiet and fairly rural with good access to both Calais and Dunkirk ie D11 at the end of the road then left or right respectively or elsewhere. A satnav for elsewhere with the radar deactivated would be of use. The penalty for use of radar detectors is draconian, you can loose your car.

To get to Ypres is about 50 minutes with all the surrounding battlefields. Take a tour and buy a guide which I would suggest be "Before Endeavours Fade by Rose Coombes". With the book you can do it yourself.

My advice is to give it a try. You will not be disappointed

Room Tip: pay a bit more for a room

We have just completed our 11th overnight stay with Bea and Philippe at the best little hotel in northern France. We found this little hotel in 2011 and we stay there every time we travel between the UK and Switzerland to visit our grandchildren. The rooms are quaint, some with creaking floorboards, and they can get very warm in high summer. However all is forgiven because of the wonderful food. We always stay demi-pension and the choice of two starters and two main courses has always been exceptional. The highlight for my wife has always been the desert selection which consist of about 20 mini marvels. On our visit in December 2013 the dining room was quiet and Philippe offered her the whole selection, but she could only manage the usual three..

Yet another delightful shour break with Bea and Philippe
Food was, of course, well up to the high standard expected and the hotel is as comfortable as ever
So difficult to beat and amazing that the standards are consistantly as high as they are
We have already re-booked!

A jewel in a small village, fantastic staff and wonderful food. The wine is expensive but there is a supermarket in the village if you wish to have a drink in your room. We had a suite at the top of the house, it was very spacious with a lounge area and separate bedroom area, simply decorated but with a lovely view over the front garden. Its our second time there and we will return.

We were so happy to find this jewel. Our superior room, Normandie, had a sitting area, large bathroom with combo shower/tub overlooking the front view. Excellent dinner-check to make sure of the offerings and times before assuming that you can eat here. Some days and hours change. Our meal was sublime. The trolley card alone had wow factor. Easy to find of highway. Dining room tables are reserved with your room name on a plaque. Adorable small rooms to sit and have a chat. Wish we lived closer.

This is the 3rd time I have stayed here, this time with my husband, parents (80 yrs+) and 10 year old son. Situated in a sleepy French village with excellent access to all main routes and just a short drive from Calais. You are instantly made to feel welcome, all of the staff are lovely and try and engage you at any opportunity. As mentioned in other reviews, the food is fabulous and not to be missed. We stayed this time in a small suite, meaning our son had his own room adjoined to ours. It was spacious and we had plenty of extra blankets and pillows although they were not needed. The decor is very French, and it makes a pleasant change from bland interiors that seem to be the norm. Breakfast is a long lazy affair - again the food is great. Staying here is like having a home from home and I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet!

Stayed just one night. Room ok, nothing great but nothing wrong. Food and wine however were top drawer.
Had the cheapest set menu at €27 which gives limited choice but when everything on it sounds great it's still too much choice! Scallop mouse in a prawn bisque was followed by tender and perfectly cooked local duck breast. Petit-fours and amuse- bouche preceded them. The desert trolley, with 3 to select from plenty looked great and the 3 local cheeses were very good if a little similar. House wines, both white and red were good quality and value. Service was faultless. Not cheap but I'd go back
