Siblu Villages - La Pignade
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 26 August 2013

We have just returned from La Pignade, this being are third holiday with Siblu, the previous two were at Le Bois Dormant in the Vendee.

The site is well laid out and the size was as we expected. Compared with the other Siblu site, the mobile homes did seem to be a little too close - we could almost touch the next door home from our terrace on one side and on the other side we were only separated by a low hedge so our kitchen window looked straight into their terrace. The mobile home itself was an 'excellence' and was indeed excellent. For four of us there was plenty of room and it was very well equipped. We had the half covered terrace which I would recommend rather than the fully enclosed terrace. Other travellers go on about Air Conditioning which in my opinion is not necessary. We had a very hot week but the nights were warm and not silly hot - and why go to a country with hot weather to lock yourself away in your mobile home with all the doors and windows closed? As for midges and flies - we had one wasp all week and definitely no midges (and we were right next to the woods).

We requested a mobile home as far away from the entertainment as possible and this was granted. We had a home next to the woods by the pony trekking. We asked for this position so as not to be disturbed by the noise - we can always use our legs and take a ten minute walk to the bar, pool etc. This was an excellent place to be and very quiet at night.

I can't comment on the entertainment for the children as our two didn't take part. We go on a holiday as a family and go out to different places during the day.

The pool complex was good and the lifeguards did seem to do their job - not as in other comments. The only complaint is that the slides were not open all the time especially after six. We came home early a couple of times to use the pool and our children were upset that they couldn't use the slides.

We didn't use the bar so can't comment. The shop was fine for essentials - bread in the morning and the wine was similar price as in Super U. We were going to use the on-site restaurant on the final night but they had stopped the menu that night and had a fixed meal of mussles only. So check if you plan to eat on-site. The pizza's were very good.

The staff in the Reception were extremely friendly and helpful. The booking in process was very quick.

The previous traveller obviously didn't look hard enough for good beaches near by - we found one within 10 - 15 minutes drive on our first day - miles of sandy beach, no mud and perfect waves for bodyboards. You need to try different beaches as everybody has different requirements. We found the beaches on the estuary were muddy and too much seaweed. But go to the Cote Sauvage a few miles further on and you get good beaches - our favourite was the Point Espagnole. Parking after 3pm could be difficult but again we have legs that we don't mind using. We looked at the beach at La Palmyre and decided it was too busy with kite surfers and didn't look too nice - it's all to do with personal tastes.

We took bikes with us which were useful for getting around the site. Also there is an excellent bike track through the forest from Ronce-les-Bains right through to La Palmyre. This was easy riding and had access to most of the beaches including the excellent miles of sandy surfing beaches as mentioned above. We also biked in to La Tremblade on the Friday which was a busy market day and worth the morning looking around - don't go on Sunday when it is a ghost town.

We also had a good day out at the excellent Zoo at Palmyre - and although busy we got tickets straight away - no queuing. Another good day was spent at the Aqua Water park on the Ile d'Oleron.

The only thing to try and avoid is travelling on French roads on a Saturday in August. The 7 hour journey from Le Havre took 12 hours - time mostly lost queuing at Tolls and the Nantes ring road (over an hour) which we thought would be better as no Tolls - you can't win.

All in all, we have found Siblu holidays very good - especially as we can get the discount using Tesco Clubcard.

Room Tip: 'Excellence' Mobile with Terrace half covered. As far away from main entertainment/pool area...

Like the previous poster, this year saw our first holiday camp type holiday, in a mobile home with Siblu. We stayed at this one for two weeks after a week at La Reserve, the week previously.
The site here feels a little more cramped than La Reserve, but the entertainment team was second to none. I think it particularly helped that we were here for two weeks, so the kids got to know the youth activity leaders well and also other children in the camp.
Our 12yo son loved the club sessions and enjoyed mixing with a variety of Irish, French and English kids his own age; the Barrcudas (Age 10-14) youth activity leader Alexis was particularly good at getting cool boys involved in dancing in shows and the like, being v cool himself; likewise, Magali in the younger age group club (Pirates) was tremendous fun - all of the leaders were really energetic and lovely. They worked really hard and their energy was infectious, putting on the shows and running kids clubs day and night.
Do get involved with a family session if you can - I was wary of joining in with the olympics day, but I surprised myself and found it great fun, you can be as competitive or not as you like, it's just great fun doing silly swimming races and slide races and the like!
The pool complex was ok, we'd preferred the bigger free form one at La Reserve. And the lifeguards seemed all too keen to befriend big gangs of young french adults who were often intimidating in their behaviour in the pool - bombing, jumping in holding hands together etc - and wouldn't do anything to stop them as they found them entertaining - not the best plan when families with young kids were in the pool. When I did complain (in french) and ask them to have a quiet word, I got mocked by one of the young lifeguards, which was really rude.
The bar was quite pricey if you were drinking anything other than wine, but the onsite privately run bakery/shop was particularly reasonable and well stocked.
Ronce itself has a fab little indoor market - try the local Charentes pate - like a coarser peppery rillettes - it's delicious. We would buy bread cold meats and cheeses, fruit and veg from here - often daily, as it was something we enjoyed doing.
The drawback we found with the area was that we couldn't access a good beach with waves - much of the beach area seemed tidal with the estuary and so didn't really have big jumping waves for bodyboarding ... we drove down to Lacanau-Ocean Plage Nord for this - probably the best day out we had, as the kids were keen to stay close to the campsite clubs, so good was the range of activities! Do be aware of the ferry from Royan over to the opposite coast though - and be careful to note the operating times - saves a great deal of driving if you wish to find miles of sandy surf beaches!
La Rochelle is definitely worth a trip - we hit the town as sales were in full throes, so got some bargains for the kids. We enjoyed the boat trip out to Fort Boyard too.
As far as accommodation goes, I'd recommend an Air-Con chalet/mobile as it gets really hot at night, uncomfortably so. We were loathe to open windows and let in mozzies, so we suffered in the heat until we could take it no more! We did have air con the previous week, so knew how good that was ...
La Pignade was a very clean site though, there were litter pickers going round of a morning, and the onsite crew seemed very busy tending to the site and upkeep.
What we did find though, all in all, was that this was not a cheap holiday - driving and eating out in france has gone up in cost so much over the last ten years, that a quick cheap dash to the Continent seems elusive, even staying on a campsite and barely eating out!

Room Tip: Get Air-Con if you're not used to a really hot climate!

This was our 1st visit to a Siblu park. In fact, it was our first family holiday of this kind. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you Siblu !
Our stay commenced the last week of June and it rained all week. However, we didn't let that ruin our holiday. Our children were adamant they would not attend kids clubs but after the first visit, they were hooked. The staff are fantastic. Their enthusiasm & energy kept our children well entertained during our stay. Thank you to Celine, Liz, Magali & Flora. The 2nd week, weather was good. We had the excellence mobile home which was very well kitted out and very clean. Our mobile was located right near the pool and playground which was perfect.
The pool was enjoyed by all but the only downside is that you can't walk in to watch the kids without getting wet. There is a water/disinfectant area you have to walk through first.
The evening entertainment was very enjoyable. There is a shop on site which stocks most of what you'd need and the lady serving while we were there was really nice and patient with our lack of French. There are washing facilities on site also. The only problem we had with that was the instructions were all in French, so will need to brush up on our French for when we return. The staff were all very helpful. Could not fault them in any way. There is free wi-fi in the bar but it takes a little while to get working and has to be setup each time you want to use it.
Some areas to explore include La Palmyre - very nice prom and beach and fantastic zoo; La Rochelle to visit the acquarium and older part of town; Talmont; Île d'Orléans. Buggies can be hired for €3 per day from reception which is really handy. We hired bikes from a place near the park for about €7 each for a few hours and did a trip down to the Ronce Les Bains beach.

This was our 4th Siblu visit at various camps. We stayed in an Elegance (mid range) that was the best we have ever stayed in, including Excellance (top range), i.e. had covered decking area, two full bathrooms. The camp site is clean and tidy.

The only advice I would say is that if its location your after Bonse Anse Plage is better as right on the sea front and La Palmyre is a nicer town and area, so even though the accommodation (we stayed in an Excellence) was not as nice as at La Pignade, we still preferred the area.

Room Tip: The Elegance Accommodation was exceptional

Brilliant end of season holiday in a superbly located holiday village located in a pine forest. Our self catering chalet type home, 2 x bed, 1 x bath came with all the bits and bobs one needs for a mobile home holiday. The park itself is immaculate. All the staff were were helpful and attentive, the on site restaurant served more than adequate meals as required. The pool, bar and entertainments were well managed, the shop well stocked with most requirements. Outside the holiday park was and is an adventure with cycling tracks through the forest to secluded beaches and car journeys to local towns and markets. Not sure what it would be like in high season but early and late seasons would seem the best bet according to other reviews.

Room Tip: Get a chalet towards the back of the park, it gets a bit more rural.

First the good:
1) Pool
Great pool area with water slides for kids 1m plus (strictly enforced). Perfect for younger children (5-9). (Very busy at peak times.)
2) Beaches
Near to a great cycle path to some nearby beaches. We mainly went to 'Plage du Galon D'or ' which is about 4 km away and is quite sheltered. (The nearer beaches were disappointing.) Also worth venturing further to the wilder, more remote beaches on 'La Cote Sauvage'. This whole area is surrounded by protected forests so the areas around the beaches are not at all built up and the area is beautiful.
3) Horse riding
At the edge of the site is a riding centre, including ponies for small kids. Has direct access into the forest.
4) Fantastic staff
The lifeguards and reception staff were fantasitic. The site was kept spotlessly clean.

Now the not so good
1) Loud!
We've been there twice and stayed on different piches. Both times we found the evening entertainment really loud. Not so much the music, but the screeching of the comperes etc. Really unecessary in my opinion. We could have taken part in the bingo while sitting inside our caravan!
2) Disappointing kids club
Maybe this was just our kids being antisocial, but they didn't take to these at all, and the staff didn't seem to make much effort to engage any natraully shy kids into the activities. Fine for natural 'joiners'. And there weren't any particularly interesting activities to tempt them in. The only thing that sounded interesting to them (circus skills) cost extra.

Myself, husband and 2 kids stayed here from 27th June to 11 July. It was very quiet at first but got busy as the days went on. By the last weekend it was very packed and the pool was well overcrowded. Our first mobile wasnt great and we got moved as it had no mozzie blinds on the window and we got badly bitten in bed. Reception were very helpful moving us. Our 2nd mobile was lovely - we upgraded to a 3 bed excellence on site for half price. I would recommend getting the excellence mobile - worth the extra money. Mobiles are close together but no worse than any other big site I think.

On site shop very expensive - 90cent for a croissant was a bit much I thought! Brendan and the team in the Bar were very good although I got the red wine from the restaurant next door as it was nicer. We had dinner in the restaurant twice and enjoyed it both times, great service although the menu was fairly small. Pizzas in take away were very good. Paid €12.50 for a roast chicken one night and defo not worth it.

My kids didnt use the kids club but the staff worked very hard and were very nice. Lotta repeatedly tried to get my little one to join in, really showed an interest. We took an Archery lesson which was €5 for an hour - very reasonable and Fifi was friendly and knew what he was at.

We preferred the beach at La Palymre - right down the far end away from the harbour was nearly empty and perfect. We did the zoo which is always a hit with the kids. The Indian Forest near Luna park was the best afternoon my son and hubby ever had apparently - zip wires through the tree tops.

Nightly entertainment was Siblu standard - not my taste but the mainly french older clients lapped it up every night.

I'd go back.

Room Tip: Make sure to get mozzie blinds on the windows so you can leave them open at night and bring repellan...
