“So hospitable”
Reviewed 22 December 2013

This was a holiday where almost everything was thought about for us and, on the very odd occasion where it wasn't (usually because it was unforeseen by us), nothing was ever any bother. We have had a great week with Andy, Heather and Hannah. As part of a party of 17 with 9 children/teenagers we have simply been looked after. That is the essence of hospitality and, as a result of that, everybody had a fantastic time. While that hospitality was delivered with great professionalism, it never felt distant. The chalet is very comfortable and big enough for everyone to have space and for adults to eat (the delicious food) in relative peace and quiet until the drink clicked in! All our arrangements (ski hire, lessons, passes etc.) worked perfectly and Andy and Heather were very generous with their shuttle bus runs for the, just more than two, loads we represented, the wait for their bus at the end of the day being no hardship and providing a minor early season boost to the Meribar's profits. That just left us to have a good time and we did.

We are a company in the area and use local chalets for our guests and clients (and friends and family). Alpine Ethos are the company we use the most. Heather and Andy are the perfect hosts, extremely flexible, professional and efficient; The chalet and apartment is perfectly spacious, always clean, and well appointed.

Les Allues isn't right at the heart of the ski area, but Ethos run a pick-up and drop-off service and there are free buses running all day and are frequent. There are a couple of pubs and restaurants in the village and a little shop.

Having run a hotel in the centre of Meribel, I can assure readers that convenience is traded off for sleepless nights, Meribel centre is very noisy!

Room Tip: To be honest the rooms are all decent level.

We had a fantastic summer holiday at the chalet. It was our first holiday with our little girl so we were a bit nervous! It was a very relaxing break for us. We were collected from the airport and the chalet had lots of useful equipment, such as a travel cot, so we had less to pack. The food was delicious and there was always plenty! The surrounding area is beautiful and perfect for walking. We can't wait to return in the winter season and hopefully take our little girl to the slopes for a ski! Heather and Andy are perfect hosts, very understanding for families with a baby and I would recommend this chalet to anyone.

We hired the complete chalet self catered.. We were a group of 18 walkers and find it very comfortable and spacious. The prioprietors Heather and Andy were very helpful and courteuos and Les Allues is fantastic place to stay even in summer for people who like hiking or cycling, there are several paths starting close to the chlaet, and of course, there's the free "navette" (bus) that goes reguraly to Meribel or Brides les Bains. At the end of our hikes we found to hot tub in the chalet, very stimulating!

We had a great holiday this year, Les Allues is always our choice as it's away from the hustle bustle of Meribel town. I'll try and break it down a bit...
Booking: We booked the whole chalet (16pax) for a week in March, the booking procedure, communication, info etc was first class. They sorted all of our lift passes out in advance, Nothing seemed too much trouble for Heather and Andy, even to the point of insisting that they collect our late arrivals from the bus stop in Les Allues.
Chalet: True, the chalet is little walk from the free bus or bubble, and Les Allues is a short trip in the van to get to Meribel. However, Heather and Andy provide a drop off/ Pick up service each morning and tea time, which eradicates any problems this might cause. They were punctual and consequently everyone could be on the slopes for 09.30 at the latest most days, which in my experience is pretty good going for a group of 16 and all the faff that comes with them. The rooms were fine, to be honest i didn't see the twin rooms downstairs personally, but no-one in the group mentioned any problems so i guess they must've been fine. The apartment rooms upstairs were great. Hot tub took a pounding every day, so a big thumbs up for that, although we all decided that the limited timings that it was available were quite strict, and an afternoon or late evening soak were definitely something we as a group would've appreciated.
Food: Breakfast was great, there was plenty of it and it was served to order as we arrived in dribs and drabs. Afternoon tea was also great, never quite figured out who was responsible for the cakes but they rocked. Dinner: Our opinions varied on dinner from OK to great. First let me say that it was all good wholesome grub, nothing actually wrong with it. But i guess a few of us have spent a lot of time eating chalet food so maybe we are nit-picking here. Most evenings were good, but for a couple of nights we felt that the mains could've been spritzed up a bit. Some flavours added to the couscous, bit of soy sauce on the stir fry, stuff like that. No big deal. The tartiflette was the 2nd best i've tried, top drawer. The Desserts were awesome, end of.
Overall: Everything on our trip worked like clockwork and Heather and Andy definitely contributed to it's success. I've asked the group if we would stay again, and i think everyone said yes, so i guess that says something. (Although if i did my sums correctly, the prices have increased by 20% for 2013/14 so i think we have been priced out of Chalet St. Joseph for the future).

Room Tip: If you are a couple in a big group, arrive early to take first pick. If you can team up in a four, t...

We loved looking after Stuart and his group last March and are delighted to gain another 5 star review, especially in this case since many of them have run chalets themselves in the past.

We would like to take the opportunity to respond to a couple of small points as follows:

Hot tub – We open the hot tub at 4.30pm every day and close it at 7.15pm in order to give our guests enough time to shower and be ready for dinner at 7.30pm. While we appreciate that some guests would enjoy a dip outside these times, for reasons of safety and hygiene we open the hot tub during après ski time when staff are on duty.

Food – We’re delighted that Stuart and the group enjoyed our food during their stay. We stand by the quality of our evening meals (and refer people to our other TripAdvisor reviews) but do take on board all comments and feedback. We are very conscious of the need to balance our menu to cater for all palates and tastes and find that on the whole we are successful in this. We are currently undergoing extensive menu testing ready for next winter and will (as always) strive to make improvements.

Prices – Our prices have increased slightly on last season but we still feel they offer excellent value for the food and service provided compared to our immediate competitors and the market in general. We would like to point out that Stuart’s party booked relatively late and we were therefore able to offer what we hope he and his group found to be a great deal.

We hope we can welcome Stuart et al back to the chalet in future seasons.

The chalet is a fair distance from the ski field but the hosts offer a free shuttle drop off and pick up service
The food varied from OK to excellent and the cake that awaited you on return from the days skiing never failed to please.
The only down side to our stay was the size of the bed rooms very small and the decor of the chalet was bland apart from that it's a well priced clean chalet with very helpful proprietors who arranged lift passes and ski hire which made the holiday easy

Room Tip: Great for families but try to arrange a larger group say 10 or 12 that way you don,t have to share t...

Great experience again with Alpine Ethos as we have come to expect - booking process very smooth and ski hire with Slide Candy so easy and convenient ( even delivering snow boards to us when we were at lunch in Meribel in time for afternoon lesson ! )
The chalet feels like a home from home in the Alps al be it with great hospitality. The 3 course evening meals were once again excellent as we're the cooked breakfasts .
As commented elsewhere although the chalet is not ski-in ski-out the minibus service to the lifts is ideal.
Andy and Heather provide a great service and nothing seems too much trouble - this year they came to rescue picking up our injured party members from the slopes and sorting out the trip to the doctors !
Hope to return next year
