I walked over snow-covered mountains to reach Aritzo and arrived just as it was getting dark. Thank goodness the Hotel La Capannina was open, because every other hotel and B&B in the village was closed. I speak little Italian, and the staff speak little English, but the welcome I got really made me feel at home. In fact, the first thing said to me by the woman who booked me in was "I saw you yesterday in Meana Sardo." Considering that I was only in that village for 20 minutes, I was surprised I'd been spotted at all! Excellent rooms, but at that time of year very few people staying in the hotel, though it seemed to be busy with local people using the bar and games facilities. It snowed both nights I was there, so that the whole area was buried, but the roads were kept open. No problem with the heating and hot water, which was most welcome, because it really was bitterly cold outside. The chalet style of the hotel really made it look great in the snow, like it was part of an Alpine ski resort, instead of being in sunny Sardinia!
