Utopia Hotel
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We were attending a function of my wife's family not too far away and have stayed around the Mons region quite a lot. Most of the hotels are more Motel than Hotel and are normally in bleak locations and a have little to offer. I found The Utopia on the web - and despite some rough reviews - thought we'd give it a try as the building looked interesting and the location looked good.

Despite not being the "stay of the century" the room we has was light and airy with a small terrace overlooking the woods next door. It was functional and modern and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful.

It's not a luxury boutique hotel and doesn't pretend to be. But if you're passing through and don't want to be on a main road or in the centre of Mons - this place is fine. Obviouslt some of the other reviewers had higher expectations or little experience of the region.

Room Tip: Choose an upper floor overlooking the forest.

This is possibly the worst Hotel I have had the misfortune to stay in. Had there been availability nearby I would have moved. The story of my stay is a litany of small issues, which combined make it a very poor experience.
No1. The first room I am given is dark, not helped by the fact one of the main lights did. to work. The staff were oblivious to this being an issue. The shower head was broken, the internet did not work (cue much muttering and a vague apology, but no action.
No2. With very intermittent internet, still no light or a functioning shower, I asked to move rooms, but one was not available for another 2 days!
No 3. When I did eventually move, the lights worked for a whole day before one failed (which was not fixed for the remainder of my stay), the safe had no batteries (took 3 days to fix) and once again the internet was sketchy at best. Cue more shrugging and blaming outside contractors. The sink was barely connected to the wall, and as a result did not drain properly.
No4. The restaurant is not open on Sunday.
No5. The lounge area is a mess. The space where a a TV had obviously been was cracked and in need of repair. There were other bits of plaster coming off the ceiling. This is typical of e poor state of the hotel in its entirety. Shoddy.
No 6. The pool was just dirty. Not welcoming at all.
No 7. Breakfast is very limited, and in no way good value. Save your money and get a croissant from a local shop.

I was there when the lady on 21 May (see other reviews) was being told there were no rooms, despite the fact she had a reservation. The next day I learnt that one of the sites was available, which indicates poor customer care.

The team on reception were nice enough but simply not sufficiently proactive enough to issues. This Hotel is in a poor state despite being relatively new and I suspect trading well on it's proximity to SHAPE only. If you can, stay at the Mercure!

When I arrived at the hotel they had no room for me; despite me waving the booking form dated 12 weeks prior to arrival date under their noses, they claimed to have no rooms available. After a very anxious wait of an hour and umpteen members of staff and a manager getting involved they finally booked me into another hotel - a sub standard hotel 20 min drive away and not in the location that I needed to be. Single women beware do not book into this hotel.

Room Tip: Tip is - go to mercur down the road.

I've stayed in the Utopia several times when visiting SHAPE, it's a very modern hotel with more emphasis on looks than ergonomics, the rooms are dark and the bathrooms have a window to the main room with no curtain, fortunately I was alone. There is always a sewer smell at the main entrance to the hotel which I thought would have been fixed by now. The bar is good and sells good Belgian beer.

The Utopia is an attractive modern building and is very conveniently located for SHAPE. My room was a good size and the bed was comfortable. However the room was decorated in very dark colours, and the lights were few and dim, so it was very gloomy. The bathroom was fine although the loo did smell a bit. The room has controls for the heating/air con system but these did not appear to operate in a consistent or comprehensible manner.

As others have observed, the rooms have a refrigerator locked away in an unventilated cupboard in the wardrobe, which gets very hot and stops the refrigerator from working properly. How do they not understand that refrigerators need ventilation?

The staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful.

As things stand there are probably better alternatives in the area.

First impressions were a contemporary hotel in a nice setting, however when I checked in I was given a room that had a damaged door which did not lock.

The receptionist seemed quite surprised that I had an issue with this, after a short delay I was given another room.

The bathrooms had a really bad sewer smell which was dreadful considering the price, the restaurant served food that I found quite pleasant but was quite expensive.

Try the mercure across the road as it is a significant improvement, both are in a good location for SHAPE so choose wisely.

We stayed for an autumn weekend in this hotel in 2 rooms. The hotel is nicely situated in a small forrest. The rooms are spacious and light but show some wear and tear. 1 room had fancy shower cabin with lots of functions but with no light in the display it became an uncontrollable monster. The other room had a shower in the bath but too low for a northern european and water went everywhere. Breakfast was ok. Swimming pool is nicely situated. No hooks for towels/clothing is unpractical, bathrobe and fresh towels are not provided. A pity you had to pay for the sauna, it should be included in the rate. Staff were helpful and kind.
