The hotel is in a beautiful calm setting, fabulous walks and scenery, but the best I can say about the establishment itself is that the food was adequate (or perhaps we were so hungry after the exceedingly long wait that we might not have noticed had it been inadequate). The wine was good, and at a good price, but the service was among the worst I have experienced. The food was plonked on the table, after an extraordinarily long wait, with a lack of grace rarely encountered. The restaurant is in a narrow draughty annex and the tables much too large, making conversation difficult. The ladies' toilets had no soap, and the mens' toilets no toilet paper - fabulous!
The lounge could have been very comfortable and cosy if the armchairs hadn't been so old and worn.
We received a less than warm welcome on arrival. The room was ok and the bed comfortable, but the bathroom was a catastrophe. It was very small, the shower was blocked so that you ended up standing in soapy water which took an age to descend. The ventilation was virtually non-existent - as soon as we opened the door we could smell the humidity. Instead of a wash basin there was an exceedingly small hand basin, which rendered teeth brushing an interesting experiment in contorsionism! The radiator in the bedroom functioned for the first evening only, and of the four electrical sockets only one functioned. There was no television - not really a problem for us, except that the prices were those of a good hotel with all conveniences, and this hotel lacked not only the conveniences but also the welcome one might expect at such prices. Breakfast was barely adequate - no sign of the fabulous local products, and the service was abysmal, not to mention the wine stains on the tablecloth from the previous evening. But the best was yet to come! On leaving we were presented with a bill for €10 more per night than the price displayed in the hotel, and without the 5% discount for two nights, also displayed on the price list. We pointed out that charging more than the displayed prices was illegal and were met with shrugs and "so what?". The lady of the house finally consented to reduce our bill, but when we pointed out (politely) the various shortcomings of the hotel and restaurant she argued and refused to believe us or to accompany us to take stock of the shortcomings in the rooms. The icing on the cake was her husband rushing out of his kitchen to insult us.
The hotel is run most unprofessionally, and I'm not sure I could recommend it even if the rooms were proposed at half the price. A smile might have helped, but was never forthcoming. Most definitely not good value for money.
