I have visited Kingfisher on several occasions over the last 5 years and it has always been my go-to get-out-of-town location, but maybe not for much longer. Kingfisher's main attraction is its fabulous swimming pool and family friendly atmosphere, and on this level it doesn't disappoint. My kids had a brilliant time in the pool, though the playground could be so much more. The equipment is heavy and cumbersome, and pretty dangerous for young children. The minigolf isn't really worth the time.
We ate all our meals at the hotel and the food is really tasty and affordable. However, the menu has remained the same since I can remember. Just like everything else at Kingfisher. It is in need of a serious makeover, their trademark "rustic" look just doesn't really compete with other Ugandan safari lodges, and too many things are broken or not replaced. No wi-fi, no DSTV or movies, no entertainment and bar is virtually empty in the evenings. BUT My biggest issue is with the pathetic breakfast buffet and poor service. Breakfast was understaffed - one waitress running back and forth for supplies. It's was pretty slim pickings for us: one tired, overcooked sausage, a 20 min wait for eggs on order, no bowls or spoons for the generic cornflakes, one plate, no African tea, no toaster, and the cheapest bread available in Uganda.
If you want to eat lunch at 1, you have to order by 11:30. Even drinks take 45 minutes to arrive and don't even think about complaining.... My 25,000/= cocktail had no alcohol (despite the price and promise from the waitress.) Don't get me wrong, I ordered all my meals at the hotel and finished my plate each time. I wish I could be writing a more favourable review..!
I don't usually write reviews on tripadviser, but I'm writing this one in the hopes that the management will invest more in this hotel that has so much potential to be a fantastic getaway for volunteers, missionaries and expats in Kampala. The location and space is perfect and the grounds are beautiful. They keep their prices low and the rooms have a lovely "African feel" that we all enjoy.
Here's hoping that they update and provide more for our next trip!
