The last time we stayed was 15 years ago, and we loved it then. From the moment of arrival in the beautiful lobby, our memories came flooding back and we were not not be disappointed this time either.
The restaurants are superb - we ate in the Thai, Malay/Indian, and the beach restaurant - and the food was top notch in all.
We had spa treatments in the wonderfully natural spa, with the mountain water running its course through the estate to the sea. The treatments were world class.
I played golf at the magnificent Els Golf Course - although I should say that there is room for improvement here. The course itself was in average condition, and the greens are far too slow. I hired rental clubs, which were old and poor. And, thankfully, I booked to play after 3pm which entitled me to the cheaper twilight rate - golfers should be made aware of this, as golf is super expensive. Also, we played tennis at the courts which are located at the club house. The courts are in poor condition.
We spent our days at the beach club, which is fabulous. Very chilled, with stacks of free water activities. And constant freebie offerings - water, fruit, ice cream, afternoon drinks - always well received by a Yorkshireman!
Lunch there was always prompt and actually not bad value.
On our day of check-out, we were given a hospitality room which turned out to be a suite. A fab touch to end our holiday.
When I was paying the bill, the chap at the desk asked me when would visit again - I told him that we defo will after the refurb which starts next month. He informed me that things will improve a lot, with all staff being kept employed during the 10-month refurb process, and will get re-trained to provide better hospitality. I really am not sure how they can improve! The attention to detail and service levels are second to none.
We will be back!!
