If your idea of a relaxing vacation is a beautiful fully-furnished apartment located in a countryside of rolling green hills and waving fields of wheat and corn, then the Birnbaumhof in Schwedelbach, Germany is the place for you.
My wife and I spent a wonderful month at Birnbaumhof and cannot say enough about our experience in this very home-like atmosphere.
Octavia and Hermann Fetzer-Knaps, the owners, treat you like family.
Our apartment was superb! It overlooked a large field where children could run and play...bordered by a forest with hills in the distance.
You can start your day with a typical German farmer's breakfast of cheese, meats, breads, yogurts, cereals, eggs, juices, coffee and tea and "specials" that Octavia might have on hand for the day. You might not have to eat again until evening! Outstanding!
The layout of the Birnbaumhof surrounds a lovely courtyard with a pear tree in the center. The courtyard is the perfect place to end each day with friends...playing cards...watching the children play...or just sitting in the sunset with a cool drink in hand.
Birnbaumhof is example of a place where you get more than your money's-worth of comfort, service, and atmosphere.
The housekeeping staff is excellent. Two times a week (or more) they'll keep your room or apartment sparkling and clean.
What about groceries? Schwedelbach is just minutes from the town of Ramstein and the City of Kaiserslautern, where you will find grand markets and restaurants featuring all cusines...at very reasonable prices. Ramstein and Kaiserslautern and another nearby town also feature large swimming pools with water slides and everything you or your children would need for a great day of fun in the sun.
But, if you don't want to leave town...there are a couple very nice Gasthaus restaurants within walking distance of Birnbaumhof.
If German is not your first language, you will find that Octavia speaks English quite well. However, be cautioned that if Octavia finds you can speak some German she will encourage you to use it...correcting your mistakes in a friendly, positive manner. My German speaking ability increased greatly during a month of speaking with Octavia. She's a great teacher.
Other positives about Birnbaumhof? Parking. WiFi-wireless in your room/apartment. Satellite television. Radio. DVDs. Fully-equipped kitchens. Breakfast. They even have a washer and dryer for your use...instructions in English..and more.
Do I recommend Birnbaumhof to you? Yes. Will we stay here again? Absolutely!

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms, facing north, have an outstanding country view.

I lived in Germany for seven years; have high expectations of a Pension / Gastehaus. Octavia is the owner of the Birnbaumhof. She obviously takes pride in it. We had just arrived from Paris, before that Brugge: the Birnbaumhof was the best in all respects; at a fraction of the cost. The rooms were large, great breakfast and close to everything. I stopped in the area primarily to do laundry at Ramstein AFB; but Octavia told me that the Gastehaus has laundry facilities.

This hotel is a personal favorite and we return there whenever we can. We even have friends who call to get the name of the place so they can also experience the same hospitality we did. The only drawback was the check in times. We couldn't get there in time for the published checkin, but there is a buzzer and they will come out to take care of you, as long as it's not too late in the evening. It's a family house as well and they have chores around the house that they must do as well. I do respect that since they are always pleasant. This is not a HoJo's folks. Anyway, the breakfast has the usual stuff for Germany, Meats/Bread/cheese/yogurt/cereal and juices. They will bring tea or coffee out and ask you if you wish to have eggs. One day they made eggs and sausage for everybody, but the other days the cook made scramble eggs for me with some smoked cheese and ham. I must say it was glorious and I haven't been able to duplicate it at home at all.
The rooms were clean and up to date. The heater controls were easy to adjust and we were very comfortable. There was some parking on the premises, but mostly we had to park around the corner, just a short walk.
This hotel is in a quaint small town. We ate at a VERY local small town bar, they didn't speak much english, but we were able to communicate, and the food was enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for the smoked eggs for breakfast....

I only stayed one night at the Birnbaumhof during a business trip, and was blown away. Not only was the hostess, Octavia, warm and welcoming, but the hotel itself was pleasant and inviting. My room was immaculate, and I could tell it had been recently redecorated because everything looked shiny and new. Outside in the hall, there were cozy armchairs and a bookcase full of books for hotel guests, and even a balcony where you could enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning.
Breakfast was made by Octavia herself, and was quite delicious! She even offered to cook up breakfast to order for me, although I was quite content with the buffet offerings. Overall, this hotel was an incredible find, both for the comfortable stay and the value for money. I highly recommend it to anyone passing through!!!

I am finding it difficult to write honestly about this place as the owner Octavia was so lovely along with the fact that we ourselves guaged the holiday incorrectly.

However, saying that this place really is only the place to stay if you are visiting family such as the American air base nearby or for buisness- but there are some nice treks nearby. It is NOT the best for a young couple needing a place to stay en route to elsewhere. There really isn't much to do in the area and the closest restaurant recommended by the hostess is awful. Just awful.

The room itself was clean and the shower was roomy. The wireless internet was so wonderful so could download a movie as so bored.

However, the beds were just terrible - very very uncomfortable and they were 2 single beds pushed together with a gap between. I hardly slept.

The other thing was breakfast. The tea was gratefully received and there were nice breads and cheeses. Then the hostess would ask what you wanted cooked- she said anything- when I asked for poached egg- no but scrambled with ham each morning was the offer.

I think my expectations were a bit too high of the place but it could be improved with better beds, a menu at breakfast and drink making facilities in the room.

Overall Octavia was lovely but I would not stay there again if I was travelling back to the area

We stayed there for one night with my very old mother (91) and aunt (86) on our way to Switzerland. They were in a beautiful adorned appartment for less valid persons. We were in a beautiful room on the first floor. All new and modern rooms and bathrooms. Prices very reasonable about 65 Euro for the appartment and 57 Euro for the room as far as I remember breakfast ( very good and plentiful) included. Absolutely calm environment near a wood: no cars, no noise from what so ever so you sleep like a log on the comfortable beds .The owner Octavia is a charming and quest friendly person. The garden is big with a table and chairs and in the village you can have dinner
We will use this adress from and to the Netherlands and Switzerland again.
Thank you, Octavia, for a more then pleasant short stay.
