Had great expectations, loved the location/views. Disappointment with several aspects spoiled our experience. Room stiflingly hot (other reviewers have commented), only one of the windows would open (= uncomfortable night's sleep - should offer fans); TV poor reception/kept cutting out. Bar/restaurant: the Inn is 'dog friendly' but unacceptable that dogs allowed into restaurant area of the bar. Chose our table in the main room, then couple with 2 smelly dogs took adjacent table. Complained to staff and advised to move to one of side rooms. Surely, guests bringing dogs to table should be accommodated away from main eating area, instead of expecting other guests to move. Evening meal reasonably good, but breakfast disappointing - small portions, room overly hot (need air con in public rooms, or open windows). Room service is offered as no tea/coffee making facilities in room but as no reply had to go down to find somebody who could bring pot of tea at end of evening. Concerns re. TV, heat and dogs mentioned to staff , but like some reviewers felt staff to be complacent and not particularly concerned. Would not visit again, and recommend only to people who can tolerate hot rooms and smelly dogs at their feet whilst eating.

Room Tip: Anyone with dog allergy should avoid - dogs allowed in rooms and eating areas (although having said...

So sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Dogs are part of a country inn or at least this one. But it should be possible to avoid confrontation as we have lots of space. Regards Cb

We have visited Whitewell on two occasions now. It had been very highly recommended by many people, and I have to say first time round I was disappointed. The staff were inefficient and lacked basic knowledge of the food (didn't know if the salad was dressed?). It took far too long for our table to be cleared of both starters and mains. I also believe it's extremely lazy to not provide table service for food and drink order taking. All it requires is a little extra training. The food was average, nothing like what we expected from all the raving reviews. Our second visit was a huge improvement in terms of food. My warm salad was DELICIOUS and the lamb shoulder (same dish I had the first time) was somehow a hundred times better. Service, again, was pretty uninspiring. I'm glad we tried again and will go back, all I will say is that service is 50% of the experience.

So pleased you came twice and thank you for your review. We do table service in the dining room at night but bar food and all the associated informality is defined by ordering and eating in the bar, quite casual and very much what we do. i very much hope we see you again. Regards Cb

We came for lunch on Easter Sunday and it was lovely, but not cheap but good tasty food.

We then stayed over night on a Saturday in July while attending a wedding. The wedding was fantastic and the Inn at Whitewell is a superb venue for this. Everything ran to plan and the food was outstanding.

Now, you're probably why I've only scored it a 3, it is probably worth a 3.5 but I didn't agree with a 4 as our stay wasn't very good but above average.

The reason for this is when attending a wedding and your a wedding guest who wants to stay over night (and for most, you'll have to stay over as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere) they did not offer a 'wedding rate' for wedding guests. I've worked in hotels previously and this is the norm. The rooms aren't cheap; our room, which was a nice room at the top of the building at the front was extremely quiet. But no way worth £191 a night, especially when attending the wedding as we weren't in the room that much to take full advantage of our rate.

I know all the rooms weren't taken by wedding guests and feel this was due to the extortionate nightly rates. Other guests I spoke also though their rooms weren't worth the money either and some of them were paying over £200 a night. Hotels make their money on selling beds and they want the revenue so to me if they just reduced the rooms ever so slightly I feel they'd have all of been taken by the wedding guests.

We will return for food but probably not to stay over.

Many thanks for your review and I am so pleased you had a good previous lunch and enjoyed the wedding. Preferred rates for groups are ideal for big hotels keen to fill as many of their rooms as possible but we have only 23 and are always over subscribed for weekends. Regards Cb

Lovely food, great service and fantastic setting. It's the top end of the pay scale for what is essentially gastro pub for, but, WOW!

We were part of a group with fussy eaters and those who wished to have different experiences. Unusually, we were all satisfied. Thank you

Our expectations were high but the hotel, staff and surrounds far exceeded them. We stayed one night in Room 22 in the Coach house which was perfect as we could park right outside our own front door with our Italian Greyhound more than welcome too. The room was akin to those featured in 'World of Interiors' magazine and we must find out the brand of mattress as it was amazingly comfortable.
The staff could not have done more to accommodate us - even allowing breakfast on the terrace as we were blessed with such glorious weather and brought more (delicious) sausages due to our naughty little dog being fast as lightening!
The bar-staff on Sunday evening were fantastic and at breakfast the following morning.
Gosh - they even have Gallimard as house champagne - need I say more? (Oh and the wine shop is brilliant)
We rarely visit anywhere twice but we will definitely be back! Thanks so much! x
(just a tiny squidgen (wince) of feedback is that the large containers in the rear car park do spoil the beautiful view of the kitchen garden raised beds and pond from Room 22 - sorry!! X)

Room Tip: Room 22 if you have a dog

Thank you so much for your lovely review. I know the containers are horrid but we need them at the moment and we will ditch them as soon as I can replace our old garage block, promise. Regards Cb

My wife and I stayed two nights in one of the Coach House Suites as part of our tour of the Lakes. The room was well appointed, comfortable and immaculately clean with a wonderfully quirky bath/shower dating from 1886....a real gem of Victorian innovation. The setting of the hotel is simply stunning and please do take the time to cross the river by means of the stepping stones, if for no reason other than the fun of seeing if you can do so without getting a wet ankle! The only "but" relates to the view from our room. Some bright spark at the hotel took the decision to put several large shipping containers in the car park smack bang in front of the The Coach House and so what should be an amazing view is completely ruined with these storage units in the foreground. No attempt has been made to mask them with trellis or planting and given the space available elsewhere, it's a thoughtless mistake. I would imagine the views from the rooms in the main hotel are much nicer, so recommend booking one of them. This issue shouldn't however take away from the overall, hence why the "very good" rating and certainly don't feel put off...the Inn at Whitewell is still excellent!

Room Tip: Just avoid the Coach House and book a room in the main hotel

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to sit on the terrace at the inn at Whitewell with our 2 dogs, in the blazing sunshine, enjoying a gorgeous lunch of rare roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, whilst looking at the beautiful view! Idyllic place.
