Stayed over at this hotel for a family birthday who had a table booked for the dinner and disco evening.

Positives:
- Quiet location
- Spacious rooms
- Super friendly and courteous staff on reception and in the bar
- Nice courtyard, though be prepared to be surrounded by smokers in nice weather
- Very clean, even if a little dated in areas
- dinner and disco was actually good fun, food wasnt too bad for a mass production and the DJ came round and took your favourite songs down to ensure all parties there got some music they enjoyed. Actually one of the better dinner dances I've been too. Staff were helpful and polite through service too.
- iron and ironing board in room which was very useful, especially as my dress had fallen off the hook in the car on route

Negatives
- Small double bed, my husband and I aren't big at all and found ourselves bumping into eachother throughout the night!
- The shower kept going hot then cold and was the most feeble power ever, took forever to get the soap out even my fine hair.
- The worse breakfast I have ever had and they have the cheek to charge £10 for it! Fried bread you couldn't even cut through, fried egg with yoke completely solid, mushrooms out of a tin (yuk), 2 halves tomato, extremely salty bacon and a very low budget anaemic looking sausage - don't go there! Also one of the more senior ladies serving clearly didn't want to be at work and was quite abrupt with a couple of guests (not us though) and continued to clean and set up tables with a face like thunder!

I would go back to the hotel again if needing to stay overnight in the area again, but I won't be having the breakfast unless it vastly improves!

Prior to staying the communication was very good. Friendly staff went out of their way to organise a room with a bed arrangement that worked for my 2yo son.

We stayed due to a family function and the bar staff were very helpful there too.

The breakfast room was good and prompt (if a little subdued).

Room was fine; decor would benefit from a freshen up. For the money paid it is good value; large size etc. Old style hotel decor though all very dark and 'gloomy'.

If you have a reason to stay here (function etc) you would not go wrong.

Stayed here one night for visiting relatives. Very large room, with comfy bed and two armchairs. Had good nights sleep despite function in adjoining restaurant. Ample parking. Hotel clean and outside well kept. Would recommend hotel but can't understand why restaurant in hotel not open on Saturday night in July?!! Never mind there are several nearby pubs and we had very good meal at The Barge in Battlesbridge.

Room Tip: Ground floor room facing away from restaurant ..no noise disturbance.

We stayed here for one night and arrived fairly late. We were welcomed at reception by friendly staff. No shortage of parking spaces. Rooms were nice and quiet and spacious. Our room had a slight musky smell. We didnt have breakfast. Check out was quick and easy. Overall a good stay.

I stayed at the Chicester from 3rd to the 6th June 2013. It is set in a very pleasant area which for Essex is quite rural. There is more than ample parking. The staff are very friendly and smartly dressed. The rooms are very clean and have a comfy sofa, showers are excellent and there is plenty of storage area.
The bar is very comfortable and the selection of bottled real ale is very good and there was draught lager, a tad expensive but not silly prices. The food however is a little bit bland and would guess that the meat is bought ready sliced as opposed to being roast on the premises.
All in all I would not hesitate to stay again and the complementary newspaper was a pleasant touch.

Room Tip: Check there are no functions on and if so be away from that side of the hotel.

Clean & painted - not new but for the money okay - to get your head down for the night it's fine , parking good - but not a 24 hour food or drink hotel... Check the details of your booking as they stick to 24 hours cancellation policy etc. Call the hotel to see if it meets your own standards. Second time here in 15 years
