My family and I recently stayed at the Irena Eris Hotel.

The hotel location is in the middle of nowhere. It's not near lakes nor mountains; however, as you drive in, the grounds are well maintained, green and pleasant and it's the perfect setting for a family holiday. There's a field where deer are kept, a stable for horse riding, a man made lake where they hold bbq's, a children's playground, swimming pool, outdoor jacuzzi. I understand there were bikes and guided tours also so it's a place packed with activity; perfect for young energetic children. Although, don't forget this is still a spa so it is intended for adults.

The room we had was a family room. It was a bit of a stretch to call it a family room as it was a double bed with a small sofa bed in the same room. We also managed to fit in a travel cot but it then made the room quite tight. The bed was comfortable enough and the kids happily slept on sofa and in cot. Our phone didn't work and we asked twice a day every day to fix it and it wasn't done by the time we left, we stayed two nights. So, basically, anytime we needed anything, we had to walk out to reception, often with two kids in tow......that was just the first experience of poor service. They did give complimentary waters and chocolates on the pillows.

Being in the middle of nowhere meant your food options were limited. You essentially have to eat every meal at the restaurant. Breakfast is great; there is a lot of choices in cold meats, salads, fruit, hot food, juices, champagne! Lunch is either in cafe or their main restaurant. Their main restaurant only opens at 1pm though so maybe a little late for younger kids so then you're left with some very basic choices of the cafe. We found out that you can order from the kids menu from the restaurant so there are other choices even for adults. The one good thing is our package included all the kids meals for free! FYI, spaghetti was good, chicken strips are good. Meatballs with rice was rubbish.

The service is sub standard. The ladies at the cafe have no clue. We had to walk to the bar to get their attention as they all hung around the coffee machine. In the main restaurant, it's slightly better but if you sit outside, you're not likely to get much service. The front desk was also a bit clueless apart from one dark haired tall young guy. At the romantic restaurant upstairs, the main guy was exceptional, knowledgable, attentive and friendly. The blonde American accented polish lady helping with the horse rides was also very good. Apart from that, the service at the hotel was the main thing that let it down and the reason I gave it 3 stars and not 4 stars.

By Polish Standards - this can be an expensive weekend away
As Canadian's travelling here - we loved the experience. Didn't leave the hotel grounds for an entire 48 hours and enjoyed the spa treatments and the hotel amenities! How wonderful a weekend in the snowy Polish winter

The decor and furnishings were rather dated. Though there had been a recent superficial refurbishment of our suite, the furniture and joinery looked rather 1990s. The suite could have benefitted from being designed by someone more familiar with the hotel sector. For example, it would have been helpful to leave space for bedside tables on both sides of the bed. Still, we managed with a communal bedside table on one side of the bed.

The staff had a good attitude, but didn't get everything right first time, e.g. restaurant orders. The reception desk was often understaffed, creating queues in the lobby and leaving phone calls unanswered.

The options for things to do in the area and around the hotel in winter are limited, but the hotel had made a colourable effort to put on a programme of activities. Mrs Melchoir and I attended one of the fitness classes, which was run by a pleasant instructor, but was at the tame end of the scale of challenge.

The hotel information did not mention that the dress code at breakfast was sweatpants and trainers, so Mrs Melchior and I turned up a bit overdressed. The ravenous behaviour of many guests around the main buffet table led me to believe that they must have got up very early and done a long, arduous walk through the snow before breakfast.

The food at breakfast was generally made from good-quality ingredients. Among half a dozen or so fruit juices, the only freshly-squeezed one appeared to be orange juice, but that had been heavily watered down. If economies must be made, it would have been better to leave out the free Cava, even if it did appear to be one of the most popular items on offer. The breakfast room was understaffed. Tables were left uncleared for too long. There were two (very genial) ladies running the omelette station, but only one of them was cooking omelettes on one electric ring, which meant a 10-minute wait. The patisserie was too heavy.

We dined in the Romantyczna restaurant, where we appeared to be eating in the kitchen, with cooking smells wafting towards our table. The "fondant" aspect of the chocolate fondant must have referred to an earlier stage of the pudding's life, because by the time it was brought to us it had almost been cremated.

The next night we dined in the Oranzeria restaurant. The range and quality of food was at least as good as that we had recently when travelling on PKP, the Polish railways.

Mrs Melchior and I had four spa treatments between us. These were more or less competent, but not up to the standard that would be expected in a specialist spa hotel.

There are plenty of details that the hotel needs to work on, such as getting the temperature right throughout the hotel, moving used towels off the beds by the pool and supplying hot water to the showers by the pool. However, the regularly refilled pots of herbal tea by the pool and in the spa went down very well with Mrs Melchior.

On our return journey from the hotel, we stopped at a branch of a well-known American hamburger chain and Mrs Melchior observed that the kitchen extractor fans there worked so well that there was no smell from the kitchen while standing at the counter to collect our order. The Romantyczna restaurant might do well to ask the hamburger chain for a recommendation on which extractor fan to buy.

This was our second stay in one of the villa's with the entire clan of nine. Once again, the property, staff and amenities exceeded our expectations. The spa services and staff were excellent. The restaurant service and food were always good. The entire staff was helpful and polite.

The villa was perfect for us. Everything that you could possibly need to feel at home is present. The daily servicing of the place was perfect.

We will visit again with the family.
