This was the fifth hostel we have hired for a family event and defiantly the best.
Loads of space both inside and out, with the bonus of a rare breeds farm.
Lots of local things to do.
staff friendly and helpful

We were glad to stay only one night in this youth hostel mainly because of the lack of cleanliness in the bedroom and attached bathroom. Whilst the room was very spacious, it was let down by the lack of cleanliness, for example, dried bits of mud on the flooring in the bathroom and the carpet in the bedroom; some of the mattresses were old and stained and a couple were covered in crumbs; a chair was covered in stains - it could so easily have just been removed, if someone had an eye for basic cleanliness. The hostel warden was friendly enough and to be fair we didn't mention these issues. We didn't try out the self-catering kitchen and there was no on-site cafe as per their website. We didn't use the farm facilities although I am sure it is a great bonus. Strangely, with the exception of one other couple, our family were the only occupants of the youth hostel that Saturday night.

A lovely place with good activities for the kids on the attached rare breeds farm.

BUT Ruined by a lack of cleaning and management. Filthy lino floor in members dining area. Kitchen bins overflowing in the member's kitchen after the "closed for cleaning" period. Rotting food in cubby holes (3 week old mouldy rolls for example). Out of date food in fridge. Toilets not missing toilet roll and hand towels. Someone's old pants down the back of a bed (well then the floor looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in a week or three).

Recently returned from a weeks stay with my partner and two children. Bedrooms fine kitchen was a complete nightmare!!!!!
I removed extremely old rotting food from the fridge and washed it out floor/cooker and tea towel all rank with a sign on the kitchen door saying it was closed each day for a cleaning !!!
Access to the farm was amazing and my children enjoyed explore after hours.
If cleaned would be excellent

I found this youth hostel to be very friendly - the warden very helpful and eager foir me to have a good stay. Not full, so I had a 6 bed dorm en-suite to myself, which was great! Lovely modern and warm shower room/toilet. Good self-catering kitchen with plenty of cooking equipment etc and cosy lounge. Would recommend.

About 1 mile walk to local pub (I didn't go as I was too tired!!).

This hostel is attached to Cholderton Charlie's Rare Breeds Centre. As other reviewers have mentioned, people staying in the hostel get free entry to the centre, and this was a big hit with our 6 year old daughter. The hostel is in a good location, with a wide range of places to visit in a 30 minute radius by car. On arrival at the hostel, you need to go to the entrance for Cholderton Charlie to register. If you go to the entrance marked YHA and try to get through the door there, you, like us, will be waiting a long time. In our case, it was also pitch dark and pouring with rain, which wasn't a good start. The staff are polite and helpful, if not brimming with enthusiasm. As others have mentioned, not all the mugs in the self-catering kitchen, for example, are clean, but overall the hostel is spotless, quite the cleanest hostel we've ever stayed in. The whole place seems to have been recently done, and has a modern feel. The cooked breakfast was good, in line with many other hostels. However, it is served in the cafe for Cholderton Charlie's, which is unheated and consequently at 8:30 on a November morning it is FREEZING cold, so wear thick jumpers (and a scarf and gilet if you have them!). In our attic room, our room heater could pack a punch, but the duvets were thin, so you had to choose between an overheating the room at night or wearing thick PJs and socks to bed to get a good night's sleep. We live in a draughty Victorian house, but we felt the cold. Unlike most of the YHA hostels, which now use heavy metal bunk beds, this one still has wooden bunks, which their associated creaking when people shuffle in their sleep, and we felt the difference. The rooms also lack a sink, which is very unusual. Other hostels either have sinks in the rooms, or facilities that are independent of each other. On our floor in the atic, there were 3 rooms with 9 beds in all sharing a small shower room. The only sink, toilet and shower were behind the same locked door. This meant that anyone cleaning their teeth blocked access by others to the toilet and the shower. This was an issue with 5 people, so I can't imagine how it would work if all the rooms were full. The lack of sinks in the rooms is an omission, given the obviously recent work and the close proximity of the necessary plumbing.

We stayed at Cholderton for a night, the hostel itself seemed quite nice and new but was really quiet compared to most hostels, hardly anyone there. Pricing was okay. We had a room with a bunk, nice and tidy and a nice sleep. Easy to find. Very convenient to Stonehenge and nearby attractions. Didn't have brekkie while we were there.
Only complaint was the shared kitchen...as with a lot of hostels the kitchen was really crappy, a real mish mash of equipment, pots and pans...and pretty grotty. Hard to find the right tools to make basic boiled pasta with microwave sauce...shortage of cutlery, plates, cups and cooking stuff...and what was there was really random and dirty.
Good showers, clean bathrooms and nice hot water, really pretty views of the countryside.
