“Peaceful and relaxing mountain getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2014

We loved our Christmas stay at Fukeikan. The staff really made the trip an amazing experience. They treated us like family and went absolutely above and beyond in ensuring our comfort and enjoyment. We were late arriving our first night due to a snowstorm (note that the more direct road going west from Shiga Kogen may be closed in the winter), but they waited for us, welcomed us, and had our dinner ready despite our delay. We stayed in a room with a private toilet and tub; however, the tub was unnecessary as the experience at the shared bath downstairs is far superior with great views. The rotemburo onsens available for private use are lovely, with views of the mountainside and sounds of the rushing river below. We really liked the lower onsen since the view was less obscured. They apologized that the third one near the river was closed due to safety concerns because the snowstorm made the path down dangerous (totally understandable) The inn is older but so charming and it is very well kept and clean. The photos in the lobby tell the inn's history and the man there took the time to tell us the story about the family who started it. We opted for half-board (breakfast & dinner included). The food was delicious and served in a very nice restaurant downstairs. Altogether an excellent and memorable experience if you want a true mountain getaway. We have nothing but fantastic things to say about this hotel and we hope to visit them again soon!

Room Tip: Having a shower/tub in the room is unnecessary. The shared facilities downstairs are a far superior...

Although the inn is fairly old, it is well cared for. The rooms are clean and have everything you need - simple but enough. The public bath was excellent ... the mineral waters just magical and so silky. After a big day walking around the mountains all our aches and pains just disappeared. Best of all they offer you 40 mins free for the "kashikiri outside baths" (there are 3 to choose from) ... but, you will need to check in early, as the best times go quickly. We chose the "Sennin buro" at the bottom of the valley ... an interesting adventure to say the least! The food was very good for dinner and breaky ... with more than enough to eat. Best of all, the staff make all the difference ... they were considerate and friendly (but I'm not sure if they speak English). We will definitely go back again ...
