Santa Catalina is a destination for surfers, divers and beach lovers, NOT for prestigious travelers who desire excessive amenities in their accommodations. That being said, this hostel was a true authentic-cultural experience!
The owner was warm/welcoming, extremely intelligent, clearly a hard worker and absolutely in love with his land, family and beautiful dogs!
We only stayed one night but he shared with us a delicious, freshly-homemade meal of shrimp & lobster stew with rice and patacones. Quite seriously, the best meal I have ever enjoyed in ALL of Central America! In addition to the food, we also enjoyed an insightful political conversation with Italo (sp? the Owner), a native of Brazil. Again, maybe one of the more unique experiences a traveler in a foreign country can hope to encounter.
Beyond my love for this owner and his pets, the property view was BEAUTIFUL, walking distance to the surfing beach and clean, with air conditioning.
To be honest, yes we did experience some bugs- one huge cockroach and lots of other mosquitos. But if that scares you away from beach-front, fairly-priced hospitality then maybe you should just stay home...
I can't say enough wonderful comments about our experience at Surfers Paradise, including that it is exactly the reason I desire to travel! More
