“Brilliant location, highly overpriced and ill mannered owners”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

We visited Glenmoor Cottages in mid June 2014 and stayed for 3 nights and 2 days. We were completely enamored by the very beautiful location of our clean and cozy small cottage. But the owners appeared to be extremely greedy, money-minded, unhospitable and looked for every minute opportunity to extort money. We had a driver with us due to which we requested the owners to provide a basic bathroom facility for him, and surprisingly they asked for 200 rupees to allow the driver to use the bathroom once a day. Also the price of the food is sky rocketing and we had to commute to the local market for our breakfast and dinner. Though the cottage was well kempt, it was not in tandem with the high prices they are charging. We persuaded ourselves that we were actually paying for the location.

Glenmoor cottages are located beyond McLeodGanj - a 20 minute climb on foot, mostly along a quiet track, into the forest trees. (or 5 minutes by car). For us this was the appeal - away from the bustling bazaar, peaceful green surroundings, bird song, walking. There are 3 small cottages, 3 larger ones, and another larger one under construction. Facilities are well maintained, cleanly kept. The owners are resident on site - and are a part of the history of the place, very charming, very interesting to talk to.

So - why 4 stars and not 5? I think it is a matter of individual taste - as you will see from the wide differences of opinion in the other reviews. We frankly did not find the food to our taste - it is also not cheap. So, with the range of eating options in Mcleodganj, we found ourselves doing the walk and climb regularly to and from the bazaar, including for breakfast (which is not included in the cottage rates). Of course going to Mcleodganj is interesting too - and good exercise, so that is not a complaint, but at times it was a pity that it became for us a necessity. The cottage decor is a bit strange, we found it heavy - but comfortable, so again this is not a complaint, just a point of view. The towels are threadbare - and we discovered are being washed every day, along with the sheets - which is unnecessary. Overall the charges are very much on the high side. Effectively you are paying for the location - the trees on all sides, the mountain view, the respite from crazy urban life. But with a few touches of more effective management, this would be better value for money.

We stayed at glenmoor last year. The cottages were beautiful, large and very clean. By far the best available in Mclo. Inspite of the beautiful location the view is limited to trees and dense forest.

They charged us 6300/- per cottage which is very expensive for the services they offer.
The most absurd thing about this place....The owner charges an extra 30% "Service charge" if you want food in your room. To avoid this charge you need to go to the dining room. On top of that, the food was horrible. It had no salt and in the end we had to go down to the market and eat.

The owner also charged us with "dry cleaning charges" for a bed sheet on which some milk had spilt.

Seemed like the owner basically was looking to rip us off every penny we had. No matter how good the place is, if they don't make you feel welcome, it's never good to stay in.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. We have published our rates on our website as well as the pictures of the cottages and surroundings. As you would have noticed, the cottages are situated at a distance from the main kitchen and the service entails manpower to provide such services. The levy of such service charge for meals provided in the room is an internationally accepted practice followed by many hotels and resorts, even where the rooms and the kitchen are housed in the same building. We would have been more than happy to accommodate any requests for more salt to be added to your food had you raised the same, though most of our guests prefer the simple food served by our kitchen, which is light on oil and spices. As regards the levy of dry cleaning charges for the damage to the bed-linen, please note that we have mentioned in our Rules (which are available in each of the cottages) that we will levy a charge for any damage/ destruction of the hotel property by the guest. Warm regards.

As friends we travel to get the most out of a location. This new year was no different and Glenmoor did not disappoint. Yes the cottages on the top are bigger and more fun and yes they do charge extra for the extra heater(which you will need as it hailed and snowed while we stayed there) or extra hot water but if you look beyond the slight monetary hiccups, the place, the food and service is great! It has its own trekking routes and the gentleman who owns/runs the place is extremely knowledgeable about the area and well versed with helping set up itineraries.

Although be vary of the local taxi's from the taxi stand nearby in town..incase you'd like to rent one. Those guys are cheats! Be very clear on all terms of service

There are so many things to appreciate:
1. The location is just perfect, a short drive (or walk) from the main town, but secluded and tucked away behind the Deodars so you feel you are miles from anywhere.
We drove up to the Eagle's nest route and took photos of the cottages- they really look out of the world.
2. We felt so much at home. The rooms were clean and huge, the food was simple, healthy, home-style, and the service was cheerful and friendly. The staff was on the look out for us when we returned each day and rushed to carry our bags up!
3. The destination is terrific, with abundant natural beauty, history and culture. I really don't have to go into the splendours. Plus great weather when we were there, crisp and cold.
4. The icing on the cake was the way the hosts make you feel at home - it has never happened to us in years of travelling!
If you are lucky you get to meet notable personages of Himachal, with wonderful reminiscences of history going back to pre-independence, which made the experience like the Mastercard ad- priceless!

I was staying at another place in Mcleodganj and had gone to spend time with a friend who was living at Glenmoor. It is located a little away from the market, but overlooks a hill and is quite amazing. At night, it gives an almost spooky feel. The food was very good and so was the service, even at midnight.

Glenmoor Cottages is a fanatic place. The care and respect is like nowhere else i have traveled in India. The owner is a wonderful, talkative person who definitively improved our stay. if you're looking to get away from the horns and commotion, this is the place to relax and find your center. That being said it is WELL OVER PRICED. Although it is a great place they charge way to much and nickel an dime you for everything. We arrived on the latest bus at 730 am and although we were welcomed to check in early, later found we were then charged for an extra half day PLUS 25% of the cost because we needed an extra bed. For one nights sleep and one meal for 3 it cost us $225. completely ridiculous. I give the facilities a 5 out of 5 but i felt taken advantage of in terms of cost. Beautiful setting. Amazing views. EXCELLENT management.

Room Tip: its a toss up, smaller room + 25% of cost for an extra bed or get a larger cottage. work the numbe...
