“Nice hotel.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Nice hotel. The room was quite nice and clean with a large bed, dark wooden floor and spacious bathroom. We had a problem with the air conditioning which was located almost on the floor and it couldn't refresh the room. Pretty good breakfast, without something special. You need a car to reach it. There was free Wifi.

Room Tip: Choose a room with balcony in higher floors. They are more quiet. If you cannot find parking in the...

Our family of 4 stayed in this hotel during July 2014. A very well kept hotel with a magnificent outside pool and gardens. The overall service exceeded our expectations and the staff were always willing to help and advice us on what to visit during our holiday.
The rooms are very sizeable, clean, and quiet. Since we had children, we were allocated a multi-level room, which was a very welcomed surprise. Rooms come also with free, strong WiFi signal.
Outside pool and gardens are really kept in impeccable condition. Indoor pool and spa come at an extra cost even for residents. We actually didn't bother about it.....who needs an indoor pool in the middle of summer anyway?
The greatest asset of this hotel is its tranquil location but still superbly located halfway between bustling Catania/Acireale and Etna. Shopping malls are also only 5 mins drive away from the hotel.
Its advisable to have own car when staying in this hotel as public transportation is somewhat limited. Parking within hotel grounds is free, sufficient and secure.
Buffet breakfast sufficient, but slightly limited in variety. Some more choice would surely fix this small issue. However food was always of high quality and very fresh.
Would surely return one day and recommend Grand Hotel Villa Itria to all our friends.
Special thanks to the director, sorry forget her name, the receptionists and especially waiter Simona who was always very cordial and willing to serve us efficiently with a smile.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of May 2014 and we will go back. The room was on the first floor in the central wing (there are three wings) above the hall. I would have given 3.5 stars but I couldn't.

Let’s start with the good news.

On the whole the room was good; it was spacious with a likewise spacious bathroom. In the bathroom the only thing missing but that should never miss was a box of tissues. The floor was a wooden one whereas there was a sort of marble one in the bathroom.

The TV was a big LG with all channels well tuned but the only way to watch it was sitting on one of the two chairs available. No armchair or small lounge. From the bed wasn’t possible. Not big deal for us though. The beds were sufficiently comfy.

The wardrobe was large with four hangers; perhaps a couple more would have done it. The air conditioning worked well and wasn’t noisy. The view from the window was on an internal courtyard on the first floor; It didn’t bother us, nobody had access therefore it was quiet. The window didn’t have shutters but a rolling blind, a bit unusual in Sicily. However, it kept the room sufficiently dark-ish. We didn’t use the fridge, but there was one. I would say the room wasn't that bright (the wooden floor was very dark but as said we liked it). Again, didn’t bother us, we were always out anyway.

Having a room on the second floor is always a good thing because you never know who is above you, how considerate people are. This time we were lucky, people above us didn’t make a lot of walking with heels or dragging of furniture. However, somebody has to get the rooms on the first floor though.

The hotel in itself is kept well, clean. We didn’t use spa or swimming pools so we can’t provide any judgement. The hall is very ample; there is also a cosy bar where I suppose you can chill out.

The bathrooms on the ground floor were good, too.

Again, we didn’t live much the hotel, we were in and out all the time.

In the evening there may have been people talking in the hall audible from our room but after a certain time the hotel became quiet, until say eight o'clock.

Now the bad news.

BREAKFAST!
The choice was OK-ish but the service was a disaster. Translated in Italian, ‘la colazione faceva quasi pena’.

While we were there, there was a big group of French speaking people for one of the many seminars or conferences that are held in the hotel or somewhere else. Breakfast is served between 7 and 10. We went twice after nine, there was almost nothing left. Personnel were hiding like troops in a trench, I couldn’t see them. I suppose they were understaffed and not enough washing up people available in the kitchen. As someone has already said, for a four stars hotel the choice wasn’t that great. The ambience was a bit dark.

I’m telling you Hotel Villa Itria’s management: something must be done about the breakfast service. It’s a pity.

One more thing, there were too many people smoking at the entrance of the hotel. Please management, get them to smoke in a specific area; and tell them not to throw the butts on the ground.

In conclusion, please do not give a star less to the hotel just because it’s far from Catania centre or because there aren’t any functional public services, unless they misled you somehow. If you want public services you have to stay in Catania; if you want a view book in one of the hotels along the coast. Even in Catania public services aren’t that efficient, as far as I can remember. You need a car not only for this hotel but also for most of places when you stay in Sicily. Coaches are more used than trains.

The hotel is in the metropolitan area of Catania, in a leafy small town named Viagrande. If you have a car is great: there is a big retail centre (Le Zagare) 5 minutes driving away, the motorway to Syracuse or Taormina or Palermo is 10/15 minutes away, Mount Etna is on the doorstep, Catania town centre less than half hour away (traffic permitting); what can you ask more? Just enjoy the crazy way they drive over there, fast and furious.

The hotel has a bit strange design. Big areas around lobby without a real function. Its very clean and the rooms are nice but no particular charm. The breakfast buffet is very small and the breakfast service was bad, always running out of either coffee or juice.
The hotel SPA was nice but there is a additional charge for entering even for guests at the hotel. The out door pool was closed even though there was 26 degrees and sunny. On the other hand the pool did not look very inviting.

Nothing in particular close to the hotel and a car is recommended if staying here. Make sure its a small car because the roads around the hotel is really Italian roads.

The hotel is modern, clean and it is placed in a quiet area. Unfortunately it is very far from everywhere (more than 30 minutes to city centre by taxi), with no proper public transport nearby. Rooms needs some painting and maintenance. Even if it is near the road to Etna in a green area do not expect any view, as it is very badly designed, with most of the rooms looking into dull internal courtyards.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor bedroom: the first floor rooms have little privacy
