“Excellent kitchen crew”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2012

Our bus was there waiting to pick us up for our day trip. We just started our breakfast. The staff went to tell the driver to wait a while and rushed back to the kitchen to get alumimuim foil and plastic bag for us to pack our food to eat in the bus. This action was beyond our imagination and took us by surprise.

A small homey hotel and the warmth is greatly felt.

We stayed at this hotel at the beginning and end of our Iceland trip. The accommodations were fine. Nothing special to talk about. No complaints except for the stinking water. It had that rotten egg smell (sulfur dioxide I belive) you find around the hot springs, geysers, etc. We did not encounter that bad water at any of the other hotels we stayed at. Bring some bottled water for brushing your teeth.

The hotel was kind of isolated in an office-park like area. There was a mall (biggest in Iceland) only 10 minutes away by foot, but it basically closes up at 7pm. Some eating places stay open later.

We were booked into this hotel 12 hours before we departed (due to Delta Vacation snafu). The hotel is okay-a 2 star property; it lacked some amenities and the staff was not terribly knowledgeable. They didn't know how to print off boarding passes! The location was awful. It was a 10-15 minute walk to get a bus into the center of Reykjavik. The bus didn't begin to run until 10 AM on Sat. They called taxis for us (4 people) which arrived quickly but were expensive-never less than $35 each way. There were few places to eat (a local mall had TGIF) and NOTHING but office buildings nearby. And we had to change rooms after 2 nights. Definitely NOT the place to stay if you want to see Reykjavik.

Room Tip: Rooms on the odd number side may be quieter

Straight forward, clean and tidy hotel which is extremely good value for money. The shower, good and hot, was worth a mention. Friendly management. Breakfast was a basic choice of cereal, fruit, yogurt, condiments and hot rolls. Recommend that you have your own rent a car or transport.

We stayed at this hotel on a two night stopover before flying on to Munich. It is 40 minutes from the airport and about 30 minutes from Reykjavik city centre. I recommend having a car for this location, but I also feel that you should rent a car anyway in order to really see Iceland. We rented our car from Sixt and would do so again as the price is about half of the other companies and the cars are the same.

Back to Hotel Smari, the room for our family of 4 was perfect in every way. It was bigger than we expected for a European room and very clean. the breakfast buffet was wonderful and they even made us a bagged breakfast for our early morning departure to the airport on our final day. The only concerns itch this hotel that we had was that we ran out of the liquid hand soap in the bathroom and even when I left a note about it, it was not refilled. We were leaving the next day so I just let it go as we had our own soap, but I am positive that the staff would have fixed this issue in a matter of minutes had we requested it. We will, for sure, stay in this hotel again when we return to Iceland. The island is beautiful and we can't wait to do more adventuring around it. Next time we stay for a week! Oh, did I mention that the hotel was not busy or crowded with tourists and this added to the enjoyment of our stay. A perfect hidden gem!!

Room Tip: Call personally even if you couldn't make a booking online. They worked it out for us and it wa...

We drove the ring road in Iceland for 10 days. We used this hotel for the first and last nights stays. If you have a car it is a great location for whatever you need to do around Reykjavik. The rooms were nice, the breakfast was great and the price was right. Hotel staff was very accomodating and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

It's in a parking lot, so don't come for the views. But as a home base, it's conveniently located, a quick drive from downtown, and the price was good. The rooms were clean, and the staff was friendly. A special shout out to Chuck (I would mangle his actual Icelandic name) who lent us a corkscrew and even opened and served us our bottle of wine-from-home during our off-season visit. A nice little lobby to meet in after our day, useful and friendly info for travelers, and a nice breakfast.
