Having been to Alykes a couple of times previously, we knew what to expect in terms of the resort. We also expected to have a couple of rainy days as it was mid October and our expectations were met!. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular storm on the 16th October, being so close to the sea made for a ringside view. We stayed at Beach House 1 so had a gorgeous seaside location. When our next door neighbours allowed us, it was wonderfully quiet with just the sound of the sea. Unfortunately, the neighbours played opera music fairly loudly , even resulting in us having to ask them to turn it down on one occasion so we could sleep. What is wrong with these people, if you want music and entertainment, why not stay in a noisy hotel. The apartment was basic but very clean. I would have preferred the sheets to have been changed more regularly, I'm not even sure if they were changed at all during our week's stay as. On the third day, my husband had a shaving accident and a few drops of blood fell onto the sheet. Although the drops moved around when the lovely housekeeping ladies made up the beds, it was still there when we left. I wouldn't want to stay in room 2 again as although it was central and provided a lovely view, it was right on the access path so lacked a bit of privacy, nothing major though. The balcony was a good size with a very thoughtful little washing line provided. We didn't see a great deal of our hosts, when the coach dropped us off, it was a case of you're in room 2, your key is in the door. Thoughtfully though, there are quite good notes left in the room to sort out safe key and air con. Overall I would stay again but would request an end room preferably on the first floor. We were unlucky with our neighbours and the noise pollution they created but if it is tranquillity you are after, generally speaking I would recommend the Beach House without hesitation.

Room Tip: Beach House 1, an end room.

According to the terms and conditions of the tour operators contract linen and towels should be changed once a week, however, we change the linen twice a week and towels every other day as an extra free of charge service for our guests. I suggest your shaving accident occurred shortly after a linen change. We are always available as stated in previous reviews, but consciously do try to let people get on with their holidays in privacy as much as possible. After all, if guests wish to see more of us, they can always call in at the bar which houses reception and is open daily from 4pm.

Last week of the summer season, 26 degrees daily and so quiet that you hear the sea as you drift off to sleep.....bliss :). The rooms were spotless, towels changed twice in a week and the staff were thorough and very cheerful too. The owners never faltered in their smiles and right up to the date of leaving went out of their way to ensure every individual holiday maker had a fantastic holiday here.

Room Tip: I was in room 1 in Beach house 1 and it was just a sublime view and so peaceful and relaxing. Very s...

On arrival at the beach house it was exactly as I had expected. I've travelled in Greece before so know what to expect in self catering accommodation. Beach house 2 was very clean and comfortable with a basic range of kitchen items as is the norm in one star accommodation. Although basic it had everything we needed. We always carry a bottle opener and a corkscrew but both were provided.

Our "Cleaning lady" in beach house 2 was lovely, she always had a smile and made a fantastic job of tidying up our messy room. Bedding and towels were changed frequently and bins were emptied on a daily basis. A friend stayed in beach house 1 at the same time and she also says the same about her experience.

We knew the resort would be quiet in October and esp as it is a family resort but we were looking for a inexpensive relaxing holiday and were as happy sitting on our balcony as out eating and drinking in the local bars. If you want to eat out at different places every night and try out the local bars every night then this time in October is probably not for you. There are many bars and restaurants offering a wide variety of food but most were closed for the season.

Although the both beach houses were full we had a very quiet and relaxing time and other guests seemed to be respectful of other people quiet. We knew the weather in October could be changeable but we only had one day of rain and one day where it was very windy. Again we didn't mind as we were as happy going to a bar or sitting on our balcony reading.

The beach is under a minute walk from both beach houses and we went swimming and even had a small fire on the beach cooking fish watching the sun go down(although not really allowed). The Beach is mainly pebbles but there is sand at points and sunbeds are there to hire 5 minutes walk along the beach, 5 minutes walk the other way is a hotel with a pool that beach house residents can use. Both beach houses have sunbeds on the grass outside the balcony's if you wanted to use them.

We hired a car twice during our trip and as my partner had never driven in Greece before we were apprehensive esp after a few horror stories from a local rep but with Vikki's advice re local dealers we rented a car at a great rate and had two lovely days driving around the Zakynthos countryside. We had no problems with the local car dealerships, although do ask about no excess cover which only cost 5euros more. We went into Zakynthos town a few times by taxi as it is only a 15-20 minute drive.

The Virago bar was open every night we were there. We didn't have any problems with the room but Vikki and Spiros were always there to solve any problems if we did or to get local information. And both were very friendly and approachable people.

The beach houses 1 and 2 are family run apartments, they may be basic but they are clean and comfortable and exactly what we wanted for our stay. I would totally recommend both beach houses if you want a sea view then beach house 1 is best and on the higher floor would give you the best views.

Room Tip: we stayed in Room 11 in Beach house 2. We had sun on the balcony most of the day. Beach house 1 has...

before i booked BH i read the reviews and was impressed by the constant positive feedback- i was not disappointed
i was initially downheartened that i could not get a room in BH1 but it, in the end, made no difference whatsoever. Part of the attraction of going to greece are the basic facilites, the no fuss, just relax atmosphere and BH was as perfect as it could be. The guy, Colin, who reviewed said he struggled to keep his clothes dry in his room. I think he was exaggerating!! we were there from 6th till last monday through two extensive storms - the first week, fork and sheet lightning, thunder and rain like a tropical downpour- it was fantastic. How often do we get to just sit and watch the weather and just appreciate the awe of it all. Fair enough it took a couple of days to clear but we had the time to wait. The second week was a shortened version but again, a fabulous show. Everyone should know that the end of season is the end of the season because the weather can and often does turn.
The room was very clean and comfortable and hot water never in short supply. we were in room 12 and Mimina did a great job and was so friendly every time she visited.
Spiros and Vicky made us feel welcome and answered every daft question as if it was the first time they had heard it.
There were indeed many premises already closed for the season but that was their loss not ours. the bars, shops, supermarkets and restaurants that we did visit were satisfactory in every way, absolutely no complaints.
we usually do not go back to a location because there are so so many to chose from but on this occassion we may make an exception!!!!!

We are sorry to hear that your recent stay in Alykes did not live up to your expectations. The month of October falls right at the end of the summer season in Greece and the reason for this is that as we move towards autumn, the wall to wall sushine weather that many travelers expect when holidaying to Greece can no longer be guaranteed. Indeed the first two weeks of October this year (2013) were exceptionally wet and stormy resulting in some challenging conditions for those holidaymakers who were unprepared for this kind of weather. Coupled with the tour operators' decision to close all properties except Beach House and the neighbouring Paradise Apartments at the end of September, this meant that customers were very thin on the ground in the resort, resulting in many restaurants and snack bars being forced to make the difficult decision to close down for the season much earlier than they would have liked to. Obviously, such establishments cannot afford to stay open without customers, and its worth pointing out that the owners of Beach House and Paradise have no control over such conditons and events. According to your own account the “Holiday was very cheap” and it would cost much more to stay in the other properties you mention at the end of your review. BH is a one star self catering property consisting of studios and a two bedroom apartment. Your classification of it as “basic” is correct when comparing it to two, and three star hotels, which BH has never made any pretention to be. Basic as it is, it has been awarded the Thomas Cook Certificate Of Excellence in Standard of Accommodation and Service for the last six consecutive years, an award given based on customer feedback. Reception for BHI&II is located at the nearby Virago Bar, a popular cocktail bar offering a range of beverages from 4pm onwards. Despite the unprofitability of staying open right up until the end of the season, The Virago does so as a service to our guests. During the season there is an over abundance of eateries of a high standard in the resort and the neighbouring pool bar is open right up until the end of October serving snacks all day. The location of these apartments “at the end of the village” is one of its advantages and one of the reasons it is so popular with people who want a relaxing get away from it all holiday. Many people love staying here in October and come back year on year. Those looking for constant entertainment and lively bars and clubs would do better to book another resort. Having said all that, the weather from the 17th October onwards has been glorious sunshine and looks set to continue well past the end of the season on 31st October...so, in summary October is a bit of a gamble weather wise, and it seems you either love it or you hate it.

My partner and I have been going to Alykes for the last few years but never until now have we been lucky enough to secure a stay at Beach house 2! We stayed in number 10 and we can not fault the apartments at all, it had everything we needed for a self catering holiday. Beach house 1 & 2 are in a perfect location and waking up and hearing the sea is amazing. We have always used the owners bar (Viragos) which do the most amazing cocktails! Black cat is our favourite! I would also like to add the owners Spiros and Vicky are lovely people and take deep pride in their bar and apartments. So I would agree with DawnandDave_2 with regard to Simons review! You just cant please some people. As for us , we cant wait till May to go back again.Keep doing what your doing Spiros & Vicky, and see you in May 2014. Sarah & Paul

we stayed in beach house 1 for 2 weeks from 26th sept 2013,no problems with accomodation and owners. On our departure we were out of the apartment at 11.00 as it was being prepared for the next guests, our pick up was at 1430 so we put our suitcases down at the bar which is not open until 1600 and went for a coffee about 5 minutes away, on our return both padlocks had been ripped from our suitcases and 10 packets of tobacco stolen.Just a word of warning.

We are pleased to hear you had such an enjoyable stay with us but are very saddened and shocked to hear that your bags were tampered with when left unattended. Guests can leave their luggage at Vasso (owner of BHI)'s house if they have any concerns.
