“Amazing transformation”
Reviewed 2 June 2013

We had booked 6 rooms at the Black Lion over the Bank Holiday weekend and we were all delighted with the quality of everything-service,staff,decor food and comfort. The new owners have obviously spent a lot of time and money to transform the Black into a luxurious hotel. The view from the bedrooms over the beach and Cardigan Bay is amazing and the beer garden was full of very happy people. There are plenty of tables and benches and two well equipped safe play areas for the children. The staff are welcoming and efficient. We had a delicious bar meal and the breakfast was plentiful with a good choice of food. However the highlight for me was the decor in the bedrooms. The standard would match and indeed surpass any boutique hotel in London and further afield. We had a super king bed with sea view and a beautifully tiled bathroom. The bedding and towels were of the highest quality.Tea,coffee and biscuits were also available in the bedrooms. We would not hesitate to stay here again-a truly impressive hotel.

Room Tip: I believe that most of the bedrooms have a sea view. Our room 1 was great!

The staff were friendly and helpful from the moment they picked up the phone, within minutes I had secured a room with both a sea view and super king bed including breakfast.
We arrived earlier than expected and even though check in was at 4 we were taken to our room as it was ready.
From the moment we opened the door the wow factor was apparent from superb new furniture and decor right down to the all things light plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits, quality bath products and plenty of pristine quality towels!
The view and location are superb and with a private car park you could not wish for better if visiting new quay.
Breakfast was organised an hour early for us as we had to be at the Urdd Eisteddfod early with Mike the owner opening up especially for us. Breakfast was excellent in quality, presentation and choice served in a breakfast room which is spectacular.
A fantastic experience in a superbly renovated hotel with service that surpassed all expectations!
Can't wait to go back!

We were staying in New quay over the Bank Holiday Weekend May 25/26 2013.

It was very busy in town but we were able to book a Sunday lunch for 7 and were served promptly and the food was superb with large amounts of vegetables and quality meats provided.

We enjoyed the clean surroundings so much we then went into the superb beer garden overlooking the bay and spent the afternoon chilling watching the world go by.
We had one infant with us and it was not a problem to erect a small tent for shade and the general happy staff helped us to enjoy a great afternoon.

We visited Newquay over bank holiday with our 80 year old mother and received the warmest welcome from all the Newquay hostelries at the newly refurbished black lion. The limited menu meant all food was freshly cooked. There was enough choice for differing tastes and price ranges. Staff were really busy but all were friendly and helpful. Yes there were plenty of drinkers round the bar but this meant they didn't hog tables for diners so we were able to get a seat on one of the most popular evenings of the year! No one blocked our way so some people are always quick to criticise and there's always another side to the story.
I would certainly recommend and return maybe for a B and B weekend as the accommodation looks great.

Sunday lunch on Bank holiday weekend we chose the Black Lion because of the large Garden and play area. Placing our order was difficult because of the small bar area crowded by Bank holiday drinkers all reluctant to make room for others to place their orders. The ordering process was made more difficult by the insistence of the Bar person on having our table number and his refusal to accept the fact that our table was not numbered. He was eventually advised by on of the waitresses that there was an unnumbered table and they were calling it 50. He should have known this and not tried to embarrass customers by arguing with them. The food was basic pub grub, nothing special but nothing bad.
Lovely views from the garden and clean and modern inside if a bit lacking in character. Newly opened hopefully the Black Lion will improve given time

The Black Lion in New Quay has just reopened after a complete refurb to a very high standard while still keeping its old world charm, situated over looking the picturesque harbor the views from the restaurant, most of the rooms, part of the bar area and the large beer garden are simply stunning there is no wonder Dylan Thomas made this his preferred watering hole while living in New Quay.
