We were touring and decided on Kalamaki because it is very near to places like Matala and archaeological sites at Agia Triada, Phaistos and Gortys.
The village is in a perfect location and after asking to look at four different rooms and apartments around the village we decided that the Alexander Beach Hotel was in the perfect location. It is towards the end of the beach road which is a three minute walk away from the village with the busy tavernas on the front. So it is very peaceful and very well located. The beach with its own sunbeds and brollys are in front of the hotel, the road has steep speed bumps every 3 meters or so and traffic is encouraged not to use the road at the front of the hotel. The few cars that did come along to visit the Taverna at the end of the beach didn't use that bit of the road at all. All of this bit of the beach is very quiet and it is a little paradise. The car park is at the back of the hotel, and the back is quite under developed at the moment.
We were lucky enough to have a room on the first floor with a balcony at the side of the hotel (it was full apart from this room). So an evening drink was perfect.
Diamante, the owner was very helpful and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome (even supplying a kettle, cups and flask for our morning cups of tea.) There was a good sized quiet fridge in room and air conditioning if needed. The room was a very good size with its own shower and loo.
We made our own breakfast and ate in the village. We can especially recommend the Taverna in the square next to the large shop selling hats, sun lotions etc. The young son owns the taverna and his parents do the cooking all on the bbq outside. Every meal we had including the greek salad, small fish, swordfish, bbq lamb and pork were all beautifully cooked and very good portions with excellent value for money.
We also discovered that if you drive out of Pitsidia, the next village you can turn off to reach Kommas which is the other end of this fabulous beach, and there are more archaeological remains that can be glimpsed through the fence.
Wish I was back there!
