“Peaceful stay in Appledore”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

Torridge house was recommended to us by a friend as we were on our way to Appledore.
We were able to make a very last minute booking and stayed one night in the bird room.

When we entered the house we were immediately welcomed by Penny who then took us to our room and showed us around the lovely house. Our room was warm, very clean and had an en suite. There were a great selection of books and cd's in the room too.

Penny gave us some suggestions about where we could eat that night and directed us to the nicer pubs in the village. We had a great evening out seeing friends and returned to our room to have the best sleep we've had in a long time. The silence was almost unbelievable in the room and the sound of the seagulls in the morning gently remind you that its time to wake up. The curtains are nice and thick so if you wished to have a lie in you could definitely shut out the light.
We wandered down for our breakfast of nicely presented fresh fruit and yogurt, followed by toasted bread and a very tasty full english. We later discovered that our eggs were from the very happy chickens in the garden.
All in all , we really wished we had more time in Appledore as the village is stunning and in March very peaceful.
Highly recommend Torridge house to anybody who is looking for quality accommodation.

Also check out the amazing selection of authentic Turkish rugs around the house, some of which are for sale.

Thank you for being a great host Penny and we look forward to our next visit.
Oz & Steve

Room Tip: We loved the bird room, it was very cosy and totally silent.

This is hands down the best B&B my wife and I have ever stayed in! The place is beautiful, this stems from the welcoming lounge and hall, the rustic kitchen and through to the cosy, most comfortable, homely rooms.

Our room had a four poster bed, which was unbelievably comfy! The place was immaculate and it felt like a loved home. Our room was kitted out with an en suite, loads of cushions, a cd player, books and a great selection of teas and coffee.

Breakfast was incredible - there was fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereal, which was complimented by home made bread and croissants followed by our choice of cooked breakfast (which was inevitably a full English!), all of this was washed down by a lovely pot of coffee.

Penny was so friendly, but was also mindful of giving us our own space - she even gave us a lift into Bideford. The house itself is situated in a stunning part of Appledore and very close to amenities, pubs and restaurants.

If you stay in Appledore, this is the place you need to stay in! cheers Penny!

Room Tip: go for the four poster bed room - it rocks!

I arrived late on a terrible January evening and was very warmly welcomed by Penny. I was thrilled to be shown to a toasty and inviting room and was even more delighted when I was presented with a pot of steaming tea and home made biscuits. Then it really started to rain and Penny saved the day by preparing me a lovely tasty meal - I was so tired after my journey it was wonderful not to have to set out again in the cold and wet! I enjoyed a wonderfully peaceful sleep and was really glad that I had chosen not to stay on The Quay. Bude Street is so quiet, with absolutely no traffic noise and this, along with the cotton sheets and an extremely comfy mattress all made for an excellent night's rest.

Breakfast: Superb! I was offered such a choice, from fresh fruit, a range of breads and pastries, smoked salmon or the full English. I opted for the eggs Benedict to take full advantage of the freshly laid eggs from the rescue hens in the garden. Penny was attentive - the perfect host!

Because of the terrible weather I ended up staying for two nights and during that time I was completely free to use the house as my own. Torridge House provides privacy, whilst still being friendly and inviting.

I am a keen walker and I got to know the village very well. I would caution any visitors to Appledore that the village is on a very steep hill. Torridge House is at the bottom of the hill, in the centre of the village, but away from the main bus route, which is also the only road in and out of the village. I would imagine that this would be especially noisy during the summer months. I had also been worried about parking in the village, but I had no problems parking on the main car park.

Torridge House is excellent value and I enjoyed my stay immensely.

We stayed two nights in Torridge house over the New Year break and what a lovely experience it was! The house itself is very beautiful, tastefully decorated and filled with interesting artwork and furniture. The garden is also very special - large and interesting with an enormous fish-filled pond and sculptures. We were free to roam around with a coffee and even fed the chickens! We really felt at home. We stayed in the blue room, which, like the rest of the house, was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable; the beds/furnishings the most comfortable we have experienced for a B&B. Breakfast was a real treat. We could take our time having a long and leisurely breakfast with huge choice to choose from, from the usual 'full English' to continental. We opted for delicious scrambled eggs and smoked salmon (made from free-range eggs from the chickens in the garden!) home-made breads and jams. Penny was the perfect host, on hand to provide us with anything we needed. It was a lovely experience to sit around a communal table and chat with the other guests. We cannot recommend staying in Torridge house enough - for the experience and location, this B&B is incredible value for money. We loved our time in Appledore and will most definitely be back and staying with Penny again. James & Abby.

This is the third time we've been to Appledore- Torridge House is definitely the best place we've stayed. Penny is a very welcoming and generous host, she made good suggestions of walks and activities, comfy beds and a perfect breakfast! Well worth the drive down from London :)

We have stayed at Torridge House twice now and have had a wonderful stay each time. This little gem is run by the lovely Penny who made us feel right at home - fantastic food - beautiful house - and a stunning coast-side village which we have truly fallen in love with. Thank you Penny yet again - needless to say we will be back!

This is our second time staying here with Penny. This is an extremely nice B&B, a relaxed atmosphere and very comfortable. The breakfast as every other poster has mentioned is extremely good, home made bread and conserves, if your lucky you get a jar of marmalade to go home with. Penny the owner is more than happy to chat with you on a variety of subjects and is a super host with great local suggestions to visit or restaurants to eat.
We had two rooms on our first visit both were great all very comfortable and what you want when away from home.
Some individual pieces like furniture and carpets collected from various parts of the world can also be bought. We got some great slippers from Nepal for our 8 month old. All in all a great value friendly place to stay in North Devon!!
