“Weekend break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2012

My wife and I stayed at The Woolpack Inn for 2 nights. The service was excellent and all the staff went to so much trouble to make our stay as good as possible. It was a surprise weekend for my wife's birthday and we were joined by our children, their spouses and our grandchildren on the Saturday. We were given a 'private' area for our dinner in the evening and again the food and service were first class. We all stayed at The Woolpack on the Saturday evening.

The only downside is that the bedrooms are long overdue for a complete refurbishment, in particular the en-suite bathrooms. The plumbing was old and in need of repair and the carpets also needed to be replaced. However, the rooms were very clean and tidy and could not be faulted from that point of view.

That said, the village is quaint and the public areas of The Woolpack are very good. The village of Frome is within minutes away by car and Longleat, where we spent the day on Saturday was less than 20 minutes by car.

I would certainly recommend The Woolpack although the accommodation does let it down somewhat.

We had a good time in this pub. From the moment we walked in, the staff were helpful and kind. We had an offer to carry our bags upstairs - other hotels in this chain should take note! Our second floor 'superior' room was spacious and comfortable. Lovely bed, powerful shower and lots of wardrobe space. We relaxed!
The food was good too. Beware - portions are really big!
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would be happy to go back.

Room Tip: Get a 'superior' room for more space.

On arrival we were pleasantly greeted by a very polite receptionist, who attended to us promptly with a polite welcome and efficient check in... The hotel is set in the beautiful village of Beckington, the inside of the bar area was immaculate with lovely seating areas in which to have a drink or meal and there is a lovely breakfast/ restaurant area at the rear of the hotel, and also a pretty garden/patio area ...The Managers Gilly & Craig made us feel most welcome and were always very attentive and chatty with us. We felt like we were in a home from home.
We liked it so much we ended up eating in the hotel both nights as the food was of such a high standard, compliments to the chef...
We were out and about during the day, went into Bath (only 20 mins by car so an excellent base for sightseeing or a bit of shopping)
We were going to eat out in bath but preferred to return to the hotel as in the evening it was so relaxing to have a lovely meal and then relax in the bar with a drink.
And one of the barmen Bryan was great to have around as he always remember our choice of drinks and even reccomended a lovely wine that I had never tried before.
Our room was spacious and very clean, normally if we stay in a hotel I end up with backache with the beds but this was one of the most comfortable beds I'd ever slept in.
Breakfast was served by lovely friendly staff lots of hot coffee topped up by the lovely Craig and breakfast was served to us but the ever smiling Gilly..
Whist there we had so much fun we went to The bath Therme spa, went on a boat trip and horse and carriage ride round Bath...
We will definately be returning to the Woolpack partly for the location but mostly for the hospitality we recieved whist we were there.

Room Tip: Definitely pay that little bit more for a superior room, well worth it.

We didn't hesitate to book a second visit after having a brilliant break here in February. It couldn't be as good again, could it? Well.........it could have been, but wasn't quite. The ambience of the inn is still lovely; our rooms were clean, roomy and great value; the welcome on Bank Holiday Monday was excellent.
The special meal deals are superb value - £10.95 for 2 mains with lots of choice, not the usual basic fare. We had a fish special the second night which was also good.
Generally speaking it was just that it seemed that the amazing attentiveness of our previous visit had slipped a point to "good" or "very good" depending on the staff. Still better than average however. Breakfast, a highlight previously, was less so this time around; I wondered whether it was relevant when we were told that the previous managers left the inn shortly after our last visit.
Work to do, I think, but still extraordinarily good value.

We visited the pub for the first time in a long time and found that it had been updated and looked good. The menus were inviting and there were specials on the board. We order two specials at the bar which were accepted. TWENTY minutes latter we were told that the specials were last nights and were no longer available. We were offered the opportunity to re-order which we did. FIFTEEN minutes later we were told that one of those was no longer available as they had run out of fish. We declined to re-order again and left as we had wasted so much time.
We did not pay for our drinks and the waitress told us that if she was on duty when we called again the meal would be complimentary. What on earth made her think that we would be calling again. Absolutely awful service.

stayed on a 2 night special deal and was a bit apprehensive after some of the reviews i had read. But i was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the pub and its rooms. The food was superb and the meal deal in the evening was fantastic value. 2 starters, 2 mains and a good bottle of wine for less than £30. The ambiance of the place was very friendly and i would like to thank the staff for their attentiveness and good service. I would love to visit again and would definitely recommend to anyone else. Thank you once again.

Room Tip: I am 6' but did not find the beams in the attic room too much of a problem. If all rooms were sq...

Stayed for 2 nights on special deal. Great room in attic with beams etc. Excellent lighting and mirrors in room (often very inadequate elsewhere). Up to date flatscreen freeview tv, plus wifi. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfasts and real value evening meal deals availabl with good wine list. We would recommend to anyone..
