I found this place by chance so many years ago.....a friend of mine invited me to come and have a look....it was in 2001. After 10 years it remains for me very important place to come and have a relax and enjoy my staying: beautiful landscape and delicious cusine....but the most important are the persons who live, work and host you :-)))))
For the persons who have never been to Tuscany before, it's the right point to start with learing Tuscany!!!!!

Room Tip: villa Montagna for several families of friends, otherwise appartments Giardino, Casino, Casone o San...

Our daughter got married in Siena at the end of August and after hearing about Castello di Modanello through a friend we decided to visit it. We did our first recce last September and liked what we saw and then came back again in April to cross the t's and dot the i's. Coming from England, we also had guests coming from around the world but particularly from the USA who are much more used to American standards of comfort. However, we downplayed expectations by calling the self-catering apartments as "rustic" and in the event everyone loved them. Yes, they lack air conditioning and are a little basic but do feature what you want for a short stay.

As far as Castello di Mondanello is concerned for a wedding, it was absolutely stunning. The way the hard working staff transformed the courtyard into the wedding dinner was incredible making the whole place look like a movei lot, but this was for real! What was also outstanding was the qaulity of the food which was out of this world. We had had our food tasting session during our April visit but simply didn't expect the great quality to be maintained for 100 guests, but it was. The service that went with it was also second to none.

Altogether this is a venue that really should be considered if you want to get married in Tuscany.

I was fortunate to be invited as a plus one to a mutual friend's wedding and I have to say i was blown away by this place.

It really is something out of those Hollywood movies set in Italy with weddings taking place in castles. If you are looking to have that fairytale experience then definitely book this place because it can cater for all of your needs and accommodate all of your friends and family.

We were there for 3 days and had an apartment which we shared with two other guests. Each of us had an ensuite bedroom and a fully functional kitchen area along with a outside courtyard. There was access to the pool and we had lunch in the restaurant. We weren't there to do much other than enjoy the glorious weather and sunshine and take part in the wedding. But having said that this is a place that I'd definitely think of visiting for a little romantic getaway as you can plan excursions to the nearby towns of Siena and Florence pretty easily or try out the Thermal Spas and Wine Tasting.

The downsides are that the rooms are slightly dated so it might not cater to those who prefer the modern touch or look to their hotel/apartment rooms. Although everything was functional and clean and comfortable it is no frills. You don't get your room serviced so be sure to make good use of your towels and pack some extra toilet rolls and food essentials as this place is a bit far out to the local amenities.

If you are looking to organise a wedding then I'd recommend it from what I have seen, the whole setting is idyllic and the food, service and decor was all fabulous. I had the best cocktail finger food ever which was served before our dinner.

The dinner was served in the Castle courtyard and again this was a wonderful setting with the service and food again being top notch.

I can't fault this place other than just to highlight that it isn't too fanciful as some places, and perhaps they could look into sprucing up some of the apartments but it's still pleasant to stay in. The journey from Pisa is 2.5hr drive which can be tedious, and again train journeys seem to be a bit of a hassle too from what we heard from other guests but if you organise your trip and perhaps hire a car then it's worth the hassle.

If you're looking for some late summer sun or a quiet break then this is the place for you. Couples will love this and if you're friends want a nice chilled out break then they'll love it too.

Room Tip: Hire a car or plan your transport beforehand Take extra towels and any other essentials such as foo...

The appartments at the castle are poor - take one in the surrounding builings. We moved from the castle to an appartment at the Sanita house - it was very nice.

I can support the bad reviews concering the restaurant and breakfast

Room Tip: As I said don't take a room at the Castle - take one in one of the surrounding buildings

Castello di Modanella is one of the best places we have ever stayed in Tuscany. The castle itself is beautifully well maintained and houses the offices, restaurant, and breakfast rooms. The outlying buildings are apartments and hotel rooms for guests. In addition, there are several completely separate stone farmhouses that have been converted into hotel apartments on other hilltops across the large estate.

We stayed in one of the separate farmhouses, Sanita, which is about a 5 minute drive from the main castle. The building is split into maybe 8 apartments, although we were the only guests in the house during our stay. Sanita is situated on top of a hill overlooking the castle, a nearby pond, and beautiful Tuscan scenery. The apartment was huge with a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The building has a private pool, as well. We brought our dog (70 lbs) and had no problems at all.

The room was clean, comfortable, and large. This is an agriturismo, which means that it is a working farm that rents rooms out on the side. The rooms are not luxurious, but we have stayed in many agriturismos throughout Italy, and this is one of the nicest we have visited. The restaurant is also fantastic, and the staff is friendly and eager to explain their wines and produce (with plenty of tastings). Breakfast was wonderful and included yogurt, cold cuts, homemade cakes, coffee, etc.

A few helpful notes:
- Tripadivsor does not list their website (July 2011), but it is "http://www.modanella.com"
- You definitely will need a car to get to the agriturismo. The roads are all clay/gravel, but they are in good shape and a small car will have no problems.
- The GPS coordinates of the hotel are 43.2750N,11.6662E. Our GPS took us along a windy 2-lane road through a national forest to get there, but a MUCH easier way is to take the Serre di Rapolano exit off the SS73 and drive 10 minutes on the dirt road. Check the coordinates on Google Maps and you'll see how to get there.

Room Tip: Email them directly through the website.

I got married at Castello di Modanella in July and would highly recommend as a wedding venue. Modanella is about 3k from the local village set in stunning scenery. The accomodation is self catering 1, 2 and 3 bedroomed apartments. All are very spacious and have fully equipped kitchens. We had a number of guests who joined us for the week with others staying for 3 nights before the wedding. We were able to select accomodation which kept our party together and was in an area of the grounds where we had it all to ourselves. The restaurant is fabulous. Food was amazing and the Modanella wine is superb. We got married at the church in the grounds and Modanella staff were a great help with the organisation. The reception was due to be outside but it rained heavily on the day of the wedding but the room inside is breathtaking and I'm glad we actually had to move into this room. The evening function was outside in the courtyard and we danced until late! The wedding food was fantastic and we were quite surprised they came round with second helpings of every course! Wine matched perfectly with the food.
You need a car, as it is quite remote and not walking distance to the nearest village. Easy to get to Florence and Siena for day trips.

Staggeringly Good Location, Fatastic Food an Wine, Incredible Service.
The accomodation is like having your own village and Castle. Well equiped self service apartments and houses, all ensuite, however, no bath in bathroom (showers not great for children)
Beautiful Pool area, exquisitely maintained.
