Donnalucata Hotel & Resort
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Donnalucata
Reviewed 20 October 2012

This hotel has a resort-like setting, away from other attractions. It would be a difficult location without a car. The reception area and breakfast room were beautiful. Our room was pleasant but not outstanding; comfortable, clean, and modern. The pool setting was good and rated about a 7 on a 1-10 scale of cleanliness. Fellow visitors were very friendly. The breakfast was excellent, with typical robust Italian espresso and a good variety of European breakfast foods. We did not eat dinner at the hotel. There was an evening party at the pool, which we did not attend, and the next morning there was an unexpected charge for the pool party on our bill. We refused to pay, and the staff eventually reversed that fee. The staff were very good and spoke a bit of English. Members of our party spoke native Italian so it is not clear how we would have fared with English alone.

My partner and I stayed here last year for a few days and as all the reviews thus far should indicate, it was very much a resort for Italians. I don't remember hearing any other language, and certainly we were the only native speakers of English. More specifically, it's a resort for Italians with young children. At night there was karaoke next to the swimming pool. There was also communal buffet dining, which most people seemed to be having. Again, the food was very Italian. We chose this place because we wanted to be away from the foreign tourist areas of Italy. In this regard, this place didn't disappoint.

When we arrived, we were upgraded for free to a better room, a suite. Unfortunately, the bed was fairly crap and one night there was a massive fight between a couple in the suite above us. We could hear everything, which doesn't speak well for the quality of the soundproofing.

This resort is about 1km from its own private beach. However, it is about 5km from Donnalucata on a busy road. The resort's name is really a misnomer. We had expected to be staying in Donnalucata village; we weren't. Furthermore, our worst experience of our trip to Sicily was when the hotel's taxi driver (the guy with the Audi) fleeced us on our last day there, when he was dropping us to the bus in Donnalucata. €15 for the pleasure of a 4 minute trip. That left a bad taste in our mouth, which is a pity because Claudia, the manager, was absolutely brilliant. On our first night, she dropped us into Marina di Ragusa on her way home, and got the hotel's shuttle bus to collect us for free. We couldn't speak highly enough of her. In fact, everybody (with a single exception) consistently gave brilliant service. However, the central problem remained that this resort is not next to the sea and restaurants in Donnalucata and that to get to such places it is very likely that you'll be fleeced by the taxi driver. It's fine if you want to sit by the pool reading. If you have no car, don't stay here.

It is really the outstanding hospitality of Claudia the manager which shines out from our stay here. We've never been as impressed by any hotel management.
