Can't understand the negatives left on TA for this excellent B&B.
Gary the proprietor was the friendliest host we have meet in a B&B, the gourmet dinners he prepares are wonderful.
The rooms are quiet, spacious and very clean. In a beautifully restored house.
The large secure garage holds 5 bikes easily, with space for leathers and helments along side.
Petit Illyria is the ideal location for touring the area.
Summing up we highly recommend the establishment.

10 of us stayed here during a motorcycling trip to Normandy & we really enjoyed it. Very pleasant comfortable rooms in a peaceful location & gary our host was very friendly & hospitable. There was bike, leathers & helmet storage available too which was a bonus.

Room Tip: Although our room overlooked the road there was little or no noise as there was barely any traffic.

We felt very privileged to stay in the proprietors home.. From initial welcome to room comfort and facilities and excellent food one feels treated as an individual. It is immediatly apparent on arrival that nothing is too much trouble for the hosts of this B and B but more importantly it is also immediatly obvious that this is NOT a run of the mill establishment..........it is clearly different to many in France in that the quiality of the environment etc shines through. WE enjoyed it so much that we returned followong Christmas with family elswhere in France for another stay..
WE do not understand the really negative comments from some subscribers as we found that the owners were so approachable and met our needs when we discussed them

Hosts couldn't seem to decide if it was a hotel or a B&B and we opted instead as a 'rip-off'. Much of the blurb focuses on the elegant, clean, pleasant, decorative, well-kept interior with its original features and to a large extend it was....if that was what you wanted. However, we wanted to stay in this B&B to get the low-down on living in France as we were property hunting. Jean was quite nagative about living in France (and in the end, we had no idea why they were there anyway). We got nothing from Gary on the other hand who probably sensed our disapointment with the place by Day 2 (of 4).

The bedroom had no tea/coffee making facilities and we weren't allowed to have food & drink in the room. We were offered coffee when we first arrived.... with us thinking (stupidly) that it was a welcome courtesy beverage only to be charged €4 each two days later. Did we have coffee there after that; no way!! There's no TV /radio in the room and with no internet connection, you make your own entertainment. No curtains, just net ones. Wardrobe door stuck and a bit dodgy so we never used it. Hideous looking piece of porcelain occupied virtually all of a table-top.

The bathroom had shower gel, but no shampoo etc. nowhere to put your toiletries (except on top of the shelf above head height or a small corner cupboard above the toilet). Shower was ok.

Breakfast was like attending a funeral. Sombre music and not a continental breakfast by any means (scones!!). Never chose an evening meal; not at €25 a head. Didn't need to. Plenty of eating places in St James at half the price and a friendlier atmosphere.

Dear guests thank you for taking the time to express your personal views, it is unfortunate that you did not share your views with us at the time allowing us to address the issues in question ie: curtains, & stiff wardrobe door, by offering you another bedroom.. We had given you a free upgrade to a two bedroom family suite...
In reply to your concerns we are a gourmet bed & breakfast, and not a hotel with business facilities which you were looking for. We clearly advertise all what we offer on our website, with both pictures and information, we do not state that we have tea/coffee making facilities, or televisions in the bedrooms. the majority of our guests seem to appreciate the relaxing peaceful environment that we provide, within the house and the landscaped walled garden.
There are advantages & disadvantages with living and working in rural France, which we have many years experience of. As you chose to stay with us, to seek information on living in France and asked Jean's opinion on the subject, it is now clear to us that you did not want to hear the negatives only the positives of the rosy image you had of life in France. This was only a personal view and does not bare any relevance to this re-view..
We originally allowed guests to take food & drinks into the bedrooms, however this was abused in some cases causing mess & damage to soft furnishing which was an addtional cost to us, so as a consequence we decided not to allow this.
We do not offer a complementary welcome drink on arrival any more, previously we gave a complementary carafe of wine in each bedroom, but had to stop this for the same reasons as above. There is a tariff of tea, coffee, soft drinks, & pastries in each bedroom and public rooms should guest choose to purchase these items.
For breakfast we offer fresh fruits from the garden, yoghurt, cereals, a selection of homemade French & English pastries, toast & homeade jams, fruit juice, tea, coffee, of hot chocolate all vary on a daily basis.
We promote ourselves as a gourmet bed & breakfast, and this is the reason why most of our guests choose to stay with us and keep returning to us year on year. As you had decided not to eat with us at all, you could not compare the quality and value of our dinners. The compeditive gourmet dinner includes aperitifs, canape's apitizers, starter, main course, dessert & wine.!!!!!

We found this B & B on www.Bikestay.net, a fantastic resource for motorcycle friendly accommodation, and what a find it turned out to be. A quick check on Tripadvisor threw up a few negative reviews, however, we need not have been concerned as our 1 week stay was fantastic. We were greeted on arrival by our hosts and our motorcycle was safely stowed in the garage where the owner has installed shelving and hangers for helmets and kit, great if you happen to arrive sopping wet.
Gary and Jean proved to be the perfect hosts, welcoming us into their home, and let us not forget it is their home, always on hand when required, never far away when not. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was spotless and cleaned every day, true we had to leave the key behind, but as it was a few hundred years old and difficult to source if lost, we had no complaints. The whole place is well presented and very peaceful, this aspect seemed to bother other reviewers, but we loved the lack of TV, it gives you the opportunity to socialise with the other guests. Always a favourite part of my holidays.
As noted elsewhere here, the breakfast is not typical Croissants and Jam but a daily variety of toast, homemade jams, sweet breads, cakes and cereal accompanied by plenty of tea or coffee. We pre-booked our first meal as we were arriving on a Sunday, a day when most French restaurants are closed after midday and were so impressed we ate there every night. All meals were superb with very generous portions, home cooked by Jean, with a well thought out and varied selection throughout the week plus they included a carafe of house wine. Not cheap, but great value for money when all things are considered.
Although situated in the sticks there are loads of local places to visit an hour or two away such as Dinan, St Malo old town, Mont St Michel, Avranches, the D Day beaches and our favourite, Cancale. It’s a shame we couldn’t eat anything at the superb selection of fish restaurants on offer there for fear of ruining our appetites for the evening meal. The local roads are great for motorcycling too, plenty of bends and little to no traffic with the Route de la Baie from Cancale to Granville being a nice ride.
If I had to moan about anything it would be traffic noise. The B & B is situated on a main road which is surprisingly busy from 6.00am, so my advice is do as we do – wear earplugs to bed.

Have just spent 4 nights here, and can't understand the bad reviews. A warm welcome from Jean and Gary and a spotless, light and airy room. We ate there for all 4 nights, and didn't ever consider eating anywhere else. The evening meals were superb, from the canapes, through to the petit fours with coffee, and virtually everything was home made. Service was impeccable but friendly with it. Breakfast and dinner were served in the conservatory, which was light and airy, and not cold, considering the time of year. Breakfast was simple, but entirely adequate after dinner the night before.
Other guests were friendly and sociable and whilst the location is a little out of the way, we were visiting the whole area so found it convenient for our needs. We would recommend Petit Illyria to anyone, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

easily the most dissapointing place of our whole holiday, uncomfortable guest rooms, poor facilities and unwelcoming hosts.breakfast was extremley mediocre,a french residense with no crossaints or french bread !,just white sliced toast.the mutch vaunted evening meal was only average and expensive.dont hope to have possesion of your room keys they say they only have one set ?.on our arrival we were asked if we would like a cup of tea not knowing that it cost us £14 for a pot for 4 people.(shocking).please read the other reviews carefully ,in our opinion the bad ones are absolutley spot on.
