"Why mess with something you know is going to be good?"
-- my girlfriend justifying eating at El Resole for a third time during our three-day stay in Alba/Canazei.
During the course of our three meals we tried the Tris di Canederli, Canaderli and Goulash, Canederli in Broth (ok, so we loved the Canederli, which is a typical south tyrolean "peasant food", essentially a bread-based ball of various combinations of spinach, speck and cheese. The Goulash was large pieces of tender meat clearly slow-cooked for a good while (no knife needed). The mixed salad was fresh and the mixed mushrooms were also amazing. We also had the pizza which is cooked in a wood-oven (important) and authentic. The menu is long enough for everyone to find something, rife with local specialties, but short enough to not make it confusing and to know that what they have on offer, they do well.
Reservations are necessary as there are not too many tables and the place is popular with large families. Price point is totally reasonable (10-12€ per plate described above, more for steak, etc., obviously). This is a family-run joint, and it was fun to see the family patriarch whose 1960s wedding picture with his wife hangs in the dining room hold court at a table in the back and work his way through a carafe of the house red.
