“Very nice hotel”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

I need to stay a few days in hotel in Basel; I chose this one because of low price with breakfast and free parking. I was definitely positively surprised, because hotel offered more than I've expected.
Except free parking, there was free WiFi and Mobility Ticket for free public transport.
Hotel is not in Basel, but there is tramway no. 3, which you get to the Basel's city center really fast. It's close to German border – about 20 minutes' walk and there is cheap Aldi supermarket in Grenzach.
I had single room, where was really large and comfortable bed with view to the street. View was OK, but a bit noisy because of traffic, but at night it was OK and I could sleep without any problems. In front of a window there is sun-blind, so there even wasn't so hot.
Room and bathroom was clean, staff friendly and breakfast all you can eat :-).
Hotel is very easily accessible by car from motorway from Germany
Just one warning – do not trust Google maps about tram lines. It claims there are lines: 3, 6, 15 and 16, but in reality just 3. Which is not any problem; you can go to Aeschenplatz and change to whatever you want.

Don't be turned off by the fact that this actually isn't in Basel. For all intents and purposes it is. Birsfelden has a charm of its own. There are several nice restaurants on the street. My room was pristine with a lovely view. I walked from the train station and it took about a half hour. Trams are free in Basel for those who are staying in hotels or have a hotel reservation so I could have just as easily taken a tramam had I known that. Breakfast isn't much to write home about but it's free and fine.

Doubted between poor and average as i spent a though night trying to sleep on a mattress that was only slightly more comfortable than the lino flooring and a pillow as fluffy as a handkerchief, but then again, some people like a solid slab to sleep on. Good things to say about the Alfa too: conveniently located at a tram stop bringing you into Basel City in less than 10' (though the hotel is in Baselland, so no free pass at the hotel reception), price is very reasonable compared to the city prices, the hotel is clean, reception and breakfast decent. But in the end, generally you spent most of your hotel-time in bed, and for people enjoying a bit softness, it can feel a long time.

I chose the hotel because it was relatively inexpensive and had free parking. In terms of making a choice, here are a few things to add/reinforce to the other reviews.

First, the rooms are a bit cramped. The desk was not as functional because it was difficult to get the chair in and out because of the beds.

The review noting it gets hot in August and that the tram can be a bit noisy is spot on. Both were an issue during my stay (not bad, just annoying). However, the tram stop is right there, and very convenient. Actually, the street noise would not be bad but the window needed to be wide open to cool the room.

They are just outside Basel, so you do not get the free transit pass, so that adds about 9 Fr/day or else 3.40 per trip. Also, the bridge right near the hotel is not open to pedestrian traffic, so you can not readily walk to the other side. The buss stop is very convenient and will get you there. The hotel is also convenient to getting on the expressway.

Fine breakfast. Nothing special, but did the trick.

The pillow cases they have are a bit funky... as noted in another review, they are not smooth.

Probably one of the better bargains.

Room Tip: Away from the tram. Not sure what numbers those are.

This hotel is a 2.2 mile walk from the Basel SBB train station, and about equally far from the center of Basel town. It is actually in a town called Birsfelden. It has a tram stop right outside that can cut your walk comfortably. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the breakfast plain and simple. We found the rooms to be very clean but also very hot. It was uncomfortable without AC in August, but would be just fine the rest of the year. The only thing we did not like were the beds. The sheets were scratchy and the pillows were the worst hotel pillows I have ever slept on. Very mushy and itchy, and left a pattern on our faces in the morning.

Next time I might stay elsewhere for different bedding, but overall it was a nice and quiet place to rest.

Due to the Basel Tattoo, my recent visit to Basel wound up with me staying outside Basel in Birsfelden.

I had not realised that in fact Birsfelden and Basel are basically merged, and that Birsfelden is just a few stops from the Basel railway station. But not being in Basel by name, means that hotels in Birsfelden charge a great deal less.

The Hotel Alfa is located metres away from a tram stop, just over the river that separates Basel and Birsfelden. The hotel was clean and comfortable. It is not hugely fancy or anything and the bathrooms cosy to say the least, but really I thought it was very decent.

The breakfast was a buffet, with cold meats, breads, croissants, cereals, juices, yoghurts and fruits. Wifi was included in the price of the room, and worked well.

The only minus was that it was stinking hot in Basel that weekend (over 35 degrees C) and the rooms were very hot. At least the windows opened fully, and I think that the hotel would have been just fine in normal summer weather.

Room Tip: Rooms on the non-tram side of the hotel are quieter, but really there wasn't much traffic at nig...

We stopped off on the way back from Italy so as to visit at least one of the fantastic museums in Basel and were very happy with our choice. The rooms are a little old fashioned but perfectly acceptable and the hotel restaurant is excellent and great value. It was full both nights we stayed here and was so good, we went back the second night . Would definitely stay here again
