Thusis is a small town and there aren't many options - so we looked up Gyger, Hotel Weiss Kreuz but they were all booked up. From what we saw - they are better hotel options than Viamala. However, apparently it was a "hunting season" and the other hotels were all booked up. So we decided to give Viamala a shot.
Lobby - not much of a lobby - you have to ring #11 on the phone at reception because the innkeepers are multitasking. There was an odd odor in the reception, I think it was coming from the nearby rest rooms and the hallway to a bar.
Room - it's pretty much what's in their website. nothing fancy. a bit dated. Old carpet, but tidy/clean. Tiny old TV, window is low - our room had a decent view of the mountains and the neighbor's patio. In US standard, this is akin to motels with 2-star rating. If you arrive in warmer months, recommend to open window right away as it's stuffy. you could say the room decor is quaint...a bit huette-like.. but we slept with the window closed (we saw some mosquitos in the evening so decided to close the window) - which was a bad idea because both of us woke up early in the morning feeling suffocated and with a dry throat. we didn't sleep too well.
Bathroom - It seemed clean but OMG..you will slip back in time to the bad taste of the 70s..or late 60s?? the linoleum tiles were bright green/yellow with flowers on them. This is not so "quaint" in my view but again, it's clean so as long as it's a short stay, it's okay. The toilet makes funny noises (prob because it's just outdated) after you flush while it refills the tank. I didn't have great lighting to take the photo and it doesn't quite show how loud the colors actually are..
Breakfast: was solid/fine and kind of redeemed our impression of the place. your regular cereal/muesli selection, some coldcuts/cheeses, bread, boiled eggs. Juice selection were OJ and Carrot. & of course good coffee.
Staff: easy going and nice
There is a pizza/italian type restaurant on the ground floor but we opted not to eat there. Instead we ate at Hotel Weiss Kreuz's restaurant - very very nice kitchen, has a little patio in the back to relax and once you sit down, it hides the eyesore buildings near the train station. we would recommend eating there.
It's a sufficient place if you just need a place to sleep for 1 night. not exactly recommended for a longer stay.
TIP: if you get out of the train station, you have to cross the street to this parking building by the bus depot - take elevator to level 5 in order to get to the main street level. Viamala Hotel's website address says Haupstrasse 68: but it's really on Neudorfstrasse (which is the "main" street there) kind of confusing for those who are not from there.
