“Wood-baron elegance”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

My spouse and I stayed four nights at the Morton House Inn, which has the aura of the Victorian nouveau riche, set amidst towering locust trees on the Mersey River, Nova Scotia. Colours are dark, and the well-worn furnishings lend an air of opulence just before the fall. (And indeed, when the lumber boom went bust in the late 1880s, this place had rougher times). No a/c in our room, but the cross-breeze kept our room cool. Comfortable-sized bathroom and bathroom. The parlour, library and porch offered all sorts of reading, resting and chatting options (but we mostly chatted between ourselves since we were the only guests for three of our nights). Good breakfasts. Aside from the main house, there are motel-style housekeeping units at the back.

Room Tip: The front rooms face the river (sounds of water and swimmers) but also face the major road (day traf...

We arrived to two happy puppy faces greeting us in the window and the experience continued from delight to delight throughout our entire visit. The front porch - welcoming with swing and cheery front door - led us to a magnificent entrance, sun streaming through the skylight. The lounge, parlour, and dining room are stunning in their attention to decorative detail, period faithfulness, and comfort - not mere showpieces of the owners's obvious taste and sensibilities, but responsive to the weary traveller. Our room was provided with two queen-sized "sink in and dream-the-night-away" beds and a huge bathroom blending period elegance (claw-footed tub) with mod-cons (rain shower head). Despite the late Spring, the gardens and lawn sloping toward the Mersey River from the gazebo promised and delivered an idyllic setting. Breakfast - what can I say? Yummy, fresh, and a foodie's delight. Martin and Myles are well-versed in the sights and sites of the historical locale and proved to be able and accurate tour guides. Can't say enough - thank you for the crowning glory of our trip to Nova Scotia.

Room Tip: Can't go wrong!

The good stuff: Morton House Inn is a stunning old house, lovingly restored by its owners. We stayed in the ground floor bedroom with a beautiful old 4 poster bed. The breakfast was delicious, fresh fruit salad with yoghurt and eggs benedict.

The disappointing stuff: Firstly, the bed springs had clearly seen better days and squeaked every time you moved. Not exactly the stuff of romance! Worse, the bed linen smelled absolutely foul. We were unsure if it had already been slept in or if it just hadn't been washed. Whatever the reason, it was so disgusting that we had to change the bed at 11.30pm before we could sleep. Thankfully, there was a spare set of clean sheets and pillowcases stored in the bathroom. But, at $115 a night (inc. taxes) you don't expect to have to change your own bed. Secondly, the wifi router was clearly a cheap piece of kit that continuously cut out. When we spoke with Martin about this he seemed flippant and unconcerned about it. Conspiratorially, he shared with us that a previous guest who worked for the US government was outraged by the poor wifi service because he needed it for his job. Martin's response? "Well it's not my fault". I think you'll find it IS your responsibility, Martin. Please realise that we are living in the 21st century and the vast majority of people require internet access to remotely manage business affairs 24/7. This is the age we live in. Invest in a decent router and broadband/wifi service provider. Thirdly, we wanted to store a few items in a fridge - none of the rooms have their own fridge and it appeared we were asking for the earth by asking. We withdrew our request as it all seemed too hard.

Overall, a very disappointing experience for the money.

Room Tip: Go to Geranium House B&B instead - we narrowly missed getting a room here and the owner was abso...

The Morton House is a heritage house about 2km up river from exit 19 on highway 103. It is owned and operated by two great guys, Martin and Myles, who take great pride in everything they do. I live in the area and have never stayed there myself, but our overflow visiting friends and family have stayed with them many times since about 2007 and all have loved it. The place is immaculate, exceedingly comfortable and very restful throughout. They serve a sit down breakfast each morning which is lavishly appointed with great food. Although I have not stayed there personally, I have rented the facility for our own son's wedding. Thanks greatly to Martin and Myles, everything went superbly. They even took photos, printed them and handed them out immediately after the ceremony. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area, don't miss this one.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear do not include breakfast and are more basic and cheaper. Inside the house itself...

We were taking a self directed tour of NS, and let the clock get away from us in making hotel reservations for the evening. We stopped at one B&B along the main highway and finding that place full accepted the direction of the owner to try Morton House. Morton House is a very nice old mansion on the edge of Milton NS. Once owned by properous, influential local folks, this home has been remodeled to period by the current owners. They have done a nice job. Comfortable. Rooms have attached bathrooms. Breakfast was very nice. Worth your attention if you are in that area.

My wife and I recently stayed at the historic Morton House Inn B and B, just 2 minutes from the beautiful town of Liverpool on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Our host Martin was witty and wonderful. Our room was spacious and spotless with a very comfortable bed. The property is stunning with well kept grounds and an abundance of shrubbery and the Inn features a lovely enclosed front porch which we took advantage of to enjoy a glass of wine and good conversation. 6 last minute guests arrived late and so the following morning breakfast was complemented by their presence. And what a breakfast! It alone was worth the price of admission. A multi course feast centered around eggs Benny . I would highly recommend the Morton House Inn.
