“The George Hotel”
Reviewed 26 March 2014

Went there 21 -24th March 2014 had a room at the back of hotel ,overlooking car park and fields in the distance. Was very quite at night and during early morning .
The room is a basic room a good size with a good bathroom and a great shower hot water every time, had a smell of stale water when first arrived but that disappeared after we had a shower.
Must say for a Hotel/pub they had done a fantastic re-build it does have the old character about it with beams and feel .
Some complain of locals around the bar area but if not for locals lots of pubs would close in the quite period and this is located in a village and we are the visitors plus there is ample areas for visitors to sit .
The only down side is the breakfast I had to send my breakfast back as found a brush hair and also dirty cup but all was replaced very quickly and professionally .The breakfast is not one of the best I have had seems very small amounts especially when my wife had poached eggs & beans thought a few more beans was needed and full breakfast is a bit like a cafe style .
Never had a meal in the evening so cant comment on this but it is a very relaxing around the bar area but be aware of locals having a chuckle or two .
There is another pub near The George just up road about 50m and this is a nice place to go to for drink & food it has that Olde world local feel .

Room Tip: Parking hard to find , turn at the coop store and at the Sheep round about take the turning top r...

Booked a KGB deal £99.00 for 2 nights with breakfast and a bottle of wine. On arrival the hotel looked lovely from the outside (did have a bit of trouble finding the car park but that was due to not reading the instructions on the confirmation!) Cute bar & restaurant area, staff were so friendly as were the locals. We had room no5 was soooo lovely... really quaint, big room, nicely decorated, clean, great shower, everything you would expect.
The first night we went to the Tallyho pub just up the road as the menu seemed to have a few more options and there was a party in the George on the Friday so we guessed it would have been busy. The second night we ate at the pub it was so nice, we opted for the burger from the special board which was lovely, you can tell its all homemade and not just something warmed up. This was the same for the breakfast, pastries, cereal, juices then order from the breakfast menu anything from a full English to salmon and scrambled eggs.

Cant recommend enough for a little relaxing break away!

We spent a couple of nights and really enjoyed the hotel, the room was big enough without being massive, well furnished and clean, the facilities within the en-suite were a little buit cramped, they could have done with using some of the wasted space outside the en suite, restaurant food was good without being great, overall I would highly recommend it especially if you're in that vicinity

We are just back from a KGB weekend at the George, Hatherleigh. First impression is that It doesn't look like it does in the photos, could do with a lick of paint on the outside really. Saying that, the internal decor was very clean and following its refurbishment was finished to a good standard.

One night we stayed there was a full moon, we didn't see the werewolf, but I'm sure he was down stairs working a laundrette. We were in room 11 and it seemed to be over a boiler house or something similar, constant awful nuisance noise.

Your satnav will take you to Okehampton, but its a long way outside of there. Once you've found it its easy to relocate.

The welcome and follow up service from Rebecca and the staff was very good indeed and the breakfast was to a good standard. The general menu being a bit average though.

All in all, we would recommend the George, its location is in a small hilly village with REALLY narrow streets, with ample parking behind the pub (which we didn't discover until we had parked up)

Room Tip: Go by all means, but ovoid being over whatever makes the awful droning noise!!!

Loved staying at the George,in September last year,it was just as enjoyable this time round.
Our dinner in the evening and service was faultless.
Our room was probably not as nice as the first one we stayed in but I cant make a negative comment about it as it was still really nice.
Everyone in the hotel were friendly and extremely pleasant.
If i can make one comment it would be that there were always a large group seated in the bar directly opposite where guests approach which could feel a bit intimidating when everyone would stop conversation when you approached that area.
We enjoyed our stay and will return.

Room Tip: The four poster looks good

I stayed one night with friends passing through Mid Devon. The weather curtailed our activities and so we arrived early and eat lunch. I had the smoked mackerel which was an alarming orange colour and somewhat dry (frozen?). For dinner I opted for the steak and requested medium rare but it arrived well done and very dry. I wish I had sent it back but the accompanying chips were good, the banter around the table was lively and I was reluctant to bring down the mood.
My room was excellent; clean, warm, dry and comfortable. I slept well and found the wet room convenient.
The bar was brilliant: full of atmosphere with a really good range of beers at a sensible price. I would like this as my local. All the staff were exceptionally professional, friendly and helpful.
This is really a great country hotel but the quality of the food just lets it down.

Very much enjoyes the Sunday carvery, choice of beef and/or pork. Good choice of vegetables including a root vegetable mash which was gorgeous. The service was excellent and the setting very comfortable. Good selection of puddings as well and very reasonably priced

Room Tip: Although I didn't stay there this time, I know the rooms are very clean and comfortable
